An Introduction to the Theater

Cloud Gate Theater was inaugurated on April 2015. The exterior roof is in the shape of a bronze cloud. The interior is spacious: many connected rooms are independent space in themselves. Cloud Gate Theater was reconstructed right on the old site of Radio Taiwan International after the big fire burned the Bali tin house in 2008. In the park, there are the remaining tin containers after the fire and the memorial buildings which had witnessed dozens of classic works choreographed by Mr. Lin Hwai-min and the dancers in the past years. The designer embedded the concern for natural environment and the respect for the old structure into the design of the new architectural structure. Thus, the new Cloud Gate Theater corresponds well with the old Cloud Gate Theater. The Interior lighting is sufficient and the attractive landscape becomes part of nature.

Cloud Gate Theater is well-equipped with modern professional facilities and the square measure is 1.5 hectare, with the capacity of 400 audiences. There are two rehearsal classrooms, an outdoor green area accommodating up to one thousand people and the offices. The interior theater serves as a proscenium stage or the place for performance of the Black Box Theater. The auditorium is extended to the end of the stage. The handrails of a stairway and a block are transparent and thus the audiences can be completely involved in the performance. There are old trees and areas of rich meadow pasture outside the theatre, including 200 trees selected by Mr. Lin Hwai-min; the plum trees were grown by the mother of Mr. Lin Hwai-min and transplanted after the fire. Some of them are hundred-year old trees, once planted on the old site and had protected the old theater, now is witnessing the rise of Cloud Gate Theater.

Cloud Gate Theater holds different types of artistic performance. Besides the performance by Cloud Gate, it invites other art troupes to put on wonderful performances on a regular basis. White Living World by the renowned sculptor Ju Ming and the impressive first generation of dancers sculpted by Lo Man-fei are exhibited in this place. The public space of the theater is open to the public during weekdays, which demonstrates the intention of Mr. Lin Hwai-min, the founder of Cloud Gate, to create Cloud Gate: free tour performance, persistence in originality, going in pursuit of excellence and aesthetics. Cloud Gate Theater is not only the young dancers' dream, but also the exchange platform between Cloud Gate dancers' classical works and art at home and abroad.
