The Dance Experience

1. The Dance Experience

Cloud Gate Theater is the first park of performance art in the Chinese world. The main structure of Cloud Gate Theater is the theater. The buildings include the tree house, an outdoor green area and professional space, with total square measuring 1.5 hectare. In order to more directly approach and experience the home for Cloud Gate dancers, we planned the experience by teamwork through collected data. We arrived in Cloud Gate Theater in Tamsui which has been open for the public for merely 4 years. We were looking forward to discovering the history and prospect of Cloud Gate.

It was our honor to be instructed by Ms. Chou Chang-ning, one of Cloud Gate foundation dancers. First, she introduced ways of dance training in Cloud Gate, including modern dance, ballet, Tai Chi Tao Yin, meditation and martial arts. One kind of Tai Chi Tao Yin technique is "Chan Si Gong", which are frequently applied in eastern dance training. The teacher demonstrated the movement and guided us through to experience the physical waves. The difference between eastern and western dances is that the eastern dance focuses on the core.

After we experienced the basic practices, the teacher connected all the movements of the day and thus we could perform the unique dance training of Cloud Gate at once. Although our movements were not perfected, we fully recognized the dancers' mission to convey art with their bodies through the experience. Cloud Gate Dance Theatre with 46 years of history, has a heritage for the senior dancers to pass down the spirit of Cloud Gate to the next generation of dancers, audiences and us to establish the solid base of art.

2. The Afterthoughts of the Dance Experience

Ping-tung's Afterthoughts on the Dance Experience

With the blue sky and green landscape, I breathed the fresh air and loved this evergreen park at first sight. It was Cloud Gate Theater located in Tamsui. We wore black Cloud Gate uniforms and walked into the building with excitement. The first place was the gallery-like space and we followed the guide to the interior theater which served as stage and black box performance. Indeed, a visit to the interior theater deeply impressed me since the designer created the maximum utility of the space.

"I felt that my feet were deeply rooted in the sand as a big tree", "I sensed my body, sourced up in music and moved to the rhythm of the music" .We made our efforts to meet the teacher's requirement in front of the mirror. When Ms. Chou Chang-ning guided us to experience our bodies, one hour fled quickly. We were sad to realize that the practices were finished after learning "frog squat" and the "movement of nine joints". We wished to visit the theatre of Tamsui again!

Cai-ru's Afterthoughts on the Dance Experience

We visited Cloud Gate Theater and the guide introduced the buildings and the history of Cloud Gate. We experienced the distinctive dance of Cloud Gate and saw the photos on the wall in detail which represented the precious past of Cloud Gate. One of the photos was a group picture taken after the fire devoured the Bali rehearsal room. The photo indelibly etched upon my mind: the reconstruction of Cloud Gate Theater moved me to tears. Now, the stage of Cloud Gate is different from that in an ordinary theatre. It has mass glass, the outdoor natural light can pass through the landscape and become part of the setting. The black curtain is pulled down when necessary.

The senior dancer Ms. Chou Chang-ning guided us to experience the dance of Cloud Gate. I was worried about the difficult movements. However, the teacher introduced us a unique training for Cloud Gate. It was eastern Chan Si Gong. We had to spin our bodies instead of staying immobile as of western dance. The training allowed us to stretch our bodies. Subsequently, the teacher taught us to walk and stimulate our Yongquan. In the photos, we looked stiff like wood. However, in fact, we thoroughly stretched our bodies out. After the dance, we were not tired; instead, we felt refreshed and invigorated.

Ai-lin's Afterthoughts on the Dance Experience

On October 6th, a crispy Sunday, our group, "Masters' Gatherng", arrived at Cloud Gate Theater in Tamsui. The guide, Ms. Huang introduced the photo of the monk in Songs of the Wanderers: In the rehearsal where Mr. Wang Jung-yu put his palms together for 70 minutes and stayed immobile. Afterwards, other dancers realized that the monk was hurt by the millet shell which cut his scalp. Since Mr. Lin Hwai-min persisted that Mr. Wang Jung-yu was the one to play the monk, the dance was finished 22 years later with the retirement of Mr. Wang Jung-yu. We were touched and realized that making slight efforts can lead to the most significant success!

At the beginning, I was surprised that the teacher was Ms. Chou Chang-ning. She taught us nicely. When we stood still, we felt a thread pulled above the head. When I moved forward, I immediately felt the reaction from Yongquan. I did my best to practice the pull and flow of the heat from the top of my head to my toes. I was not sure if I did it correctly. It was new and amazing. I had never experienced the delicate feeling of my body, mind and spirit as a whole. I finally realized why Cloud Gate stood out on the international stage, touching numerous people.

Chun-hsien's Afterthoughts on the Dance Experience

October 6th was a pleasant day and we visited Cloud Gate Theater and experienced the activities. It is not only the theatre for Cloud Gate, but also the place for Cloud Gate Foundation dance troupe. Besides, it is an exchange platform for the artists at home and abroad. The design of the theatre is extremely special. The interior space is based on the burned tin house and the measure square is equal to two rehearsal rooms. The sunlight could pass through the theatre and nature becomes part of the performance. There was also an impressive outdoor green area, with the capacity of one thousand audiences.

We were honored to invite the experienced dancer of Cloud Gate to teach us. We imagined to be dancers who practiced the warmup and learned the unique techniques of Cloud Gate dance. It recalled me of the performance of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre I saw before. The dancers were very impressive. They were able to pay attention to their physical performance and precision of each movement, at the same time take care of the group presentation with the other dancers. A perfect performance requires effective teamwork. The experience was special and I hoped that I can revisit this place in the days to come.

Crystal's Afterthoughts on the Dance Experience

The fire in 1992 burned everything Cloud Gate Dance Theatre had built up for the past 19 years. With the support of the public, Cloud Gate reconstructed their park in Tamsui for the dancers' rehearsal and performance. People who were interested in dance could visit the theater too. We were lucky to witness the park that is full of Cloud Gate's history and understand the delicate and meaningful green designs at Cloud Gate Theater. The part that impresses me the most is the big wall filled with the names of the donors. This shows the appreciation of Cloud Gate to the society and their wills to pay back the society via good performances.

We were surprised the moment we arrived in the dance classroom and saw our instructor, the well-known dancer of Cloud Gate, Ms. Chou Chang-ning. She instructed the movements in the easiest way so we could understand the steps and practice them precisely. She also taught us to relax the nine joints in our bodies. Moreover, when we walk, the Yongquan, an acupoint of the feet should always be on the ground in order to walk steadily. In addition, since she knew that we did not have any dance experience, and might feel uncomfortable dancing, she encouraged us to practice the movements boldly. Thanks to her, we had a wonderful dance experience.

Ching-pei's Afterthoughts on the Dance Experience

On a sunny, breezy morning we visited the well-known "Cloud Gate Theater" in Tamsui. I was surprised by the spacious park. Green divot in front of the square and the unique and bronze building were attractive in the sunshine. Inside the building, the guide introduced the rooms and reviewed the important works of Cloud Gate in the past years and the elaborate interior structure of the theater. What impressed me was that the place was not closed as other theaters. Cloud Gate Theater utilizes natural light and flexible seats, this increase the capacity of the audiences. I fully recognized the earnest devotion of the designer to perfecting his design.

After we visited the theater, it was the dance experience that we had looked forward to. In only one hour, I learned a lot. First, the teacher taught us the ways to stretch our bodies for more difficult movements. Subsequently, she trained our balance and we practiced the frog squat to relax our bodies. After this experience, I realized that dance is not a piece of cake and a successful dance is fully achieved by effective and efficient teamwork. I recognized the hard work of all dancers, choreographers and workers. Without them, we would never experience the excellent performance.

Lin-yin's Afterthoughts on the Dance Experience

On October 6, we arrived at Cloud Gate Theater in Tamsui. As the name suggests, the house is covered by vines. The guide told us that it is the old site of Radio Taiwan International. The city government rented this place to Cloud Gate Theater. It felt comfortable that day, the ventilation was good and sunlight shined through the interior space inside. What impressed me the most was the wall filled with the names of the donors after the tin house of Cloud Gate was burned down. I was extremely moved and I realized that the success of Cloud Gate came from the unconditional public support.

Before the experience, everyone was nervous. We did not dance before. Realizing that our teacher was Ms. Chou Chang-ning, one of the important roles in Cloud Gate, we were surprised. Although I was following the teacher's instructions, I still could not relax. The teacher was at ease and danced elegantly and peacefully. However, I was agitated and I could not focus on my body. After the course, I was able to follow the teacher but there were still a lot left for improvements.

Wan-fang's Afterthoughts on the Dance Experience

Today we arrived at Cloud Gate Theater in Tamsui. The serene ambience there was different from the noise in the cities, it was filled with natural and artistic climate. The guide introduced the histories of the photos in the theatre and showed us the performance hall of Cloud Gate. The design of the theatre is different from others which are closed from the external light. However, the design of Cloud Gate allow its dancers to perceive the natural light instead of practicing in the dark all day. With the thoughtful design of Cloud Gate, everyone can approach nature, escape from hustle life and enjoy the tranquility away from the cities.

We arrived in a classroom located in Cloud Gate Theater and we felt calm in the place. At the beginning, the teacher showed us how to stretch our bodies. We stretched the arms to the sides and to the top. Thus, our bodies which were always at the desks were at ease. Thus, we slowly stepped on the ground to experience the primitive touch. Finally, we felt "freed" the freedom of running and jumping. Those movements released our stress. We were appreciative of the teacher for the training.

Yen-chen's Afterthoughts on the Dance Experience

On a visit to Cloud Gate Theater, we finally saw the rehearsal classroom of Cloud Gate, an extremely professional stage. The background of the stage is mostly black. The tree outside of French windows dominates the landscape. With the professional and precise introduction by the guide Mrs. Huang, I learned the history of Cloud Gate. What impressed me the most was the rehearsal place of Cloud Gate was originally the tin house which was burned down. People know the difficulties that Cloud Gate faced, thus they donated a huge sum of money to them. They placed the photo of the burned down old rehearsal room on the wall at the reconstructed theatre to remind themselves of the people who had supported Cloud Gate.

Luckily, we could experience the course in the rehearsal room of Cloud Gate Theater. The teacher was the experienced Cloud Gate dancer Ms. Chou Chang-ning! She emphasized that the body should move with our center of gravity when dancing. The first movement we learned was walking forward slowly. We experienced the touch of the Yongquan on the ground. We should stay straight as if we were being pulled by a thread. We practiced several times and realized that the dancers were careful with every detail of their movements. After experiencing the dance, we acquired the content and balance skills of dance. We felt invigorated after dancing!

Yung-chieh's Afterthoughts on the Dance Experience

We arrived at Cloud Gate Theater, the old site of Radio Taiwan International. At the beginning, the guide introduced the photos hung on the rehearsal place, the images of well-known works of Cloud Gate and historical pictures. Subsequently, we visited the dancers' rehearsal room, the list of donors, World Series of Mr. Ju Ming and interior decorations in the theatre. We realized that the original external appearance is still in the interior space of the building. There are some elements from the previous Bali rehearsal room, and these are reminiscent of those past glorious days for the dancers of Cloud Gate.

After the visit, it was the physical movement course of Cloud Gate that we looked forward to. Since the location was in the rehearsal place of Cloud Gate dancers. The instructor was the experienced dancer of Cloud Gate, we became extremely excited. The basic stretch made us feel our bodies and by the eastern Tai Chi Tao Yin, we relaxed and stretched our bodies. It seemed to be easy, however, we found that our bodies were rigid. The course of 60 minutes finished fast and we all sweated. It showed how deeply we were immersed in it!
