Interview with Mr. Lin Hwai-min

Q1: What gave you the idea to establish Cloud Gate Dance Theatre?

1-5-2I returned to Taiwan in 1972, after finishing my studies abroad. This time period coincided with Taiwan's withdrawal from the United Nations and the Senkaku Islands dispute. I was full of enthusiasm and ambition. A chance encounter led to a work opportunity with Mr. Li Tai-hsiang. I became aware of the need for Taiwan to have its own dance troupe. I was young, naïve, and motivated. My only thought was the desire to dance for the people of Taiwan. That's how it all began.

Q2: After founding Cloud Gate Theater, how did you overcome the obstacles you have encountered along the way?

1-5-3My philosophy of life is "simplicity." Without this, I would never have gotten this far. Our desires and aspirations have a mind of their own, some of which you may not even be aware of. Your consciousness points you in opposing directions, which only causes confusion. The only way is to fulfill your dream is to just go for it.

Q3: As opposed to most professional dancers, you did not start studying dance from a young age. You were inspired by a performance of Jose Limon's modern dance troupe at the age of 14 and thus started your pursuit of a dance career. What was the most difficult part at the beginning?

1-5-4At the age of 14, after receiving my first compensation for an article I wrote, I immediately signed up for ballet classes. I was obsessed with dancing and writing. Since I lived at school, the distance helped me get along with my family. During summer and winter vacation, I returned home and wrote stories and danced every day. The housekeeper would inform me of my father's arrival. I immediately hide my writing inside the drawer and take out my textbooks. In order to continue dance classes, I worked hard to write more stories so I could make more money.

Q4: Your educational career was based on the arts. When you decided to devote yourself to performance art, was your family supportive?

1-5-5My father was the Magistrate of Chiayi and he assumed I would become a politician like him and contribute to society. People usually don't understand why a scholar who study abroad would decide to start a dance troupe instead of following his father's footsteps. My father told me, "dancers are the greatest among all artists since they express themselves with their bodies. However, the industry of dancing might be for beggars." While establishing the dance troupe, my mother tried to discourage me for several months and even gave me several ultimatums. However, when I found the dancing studio, she sent me mirrors and quietly became my most supportive audience.

Q5: Are there any differences between choreographing for an outdoor dance performance vs. an indoor one?

1-5-6In order to attract the audience for outdoor performances, the piece should be "excellent." I change my choreography in response to audience reaction to the outdoor performances. I always discuss with dancers regarding the change of choreographies due to weather conditions. It is extremely important to take care of the physical and mental states of dancers! For instance, they tremble with the wind in Chihshang. The dancers stand with one leg and the wind blows their skirts. The image is impressive! One year, it rained heavily in Chihshang and the dancers decided to change some parts of Moon Water. They rehearsed simply with the music from a cell phone! We always have more concerns for the choreography of outdoor performances.

Q6: Dance of Cloud Gate Theater is always innovative and each piece of choreography has a different style. Where do your inspirations come from?

1-5-7Each piece is unique, shows life and potential, I must try to complete them with a spark. They are never the same and form successively. Dancers cannot keep their legs raised all the time. They must constantly use their physical strength in order to hold the same position. It is always different, that's why there is still chemistry and motivation among us. As for inspiration, I can create pieces without it. I am a craftsman and I don't tell people about my inspiration. I keep working and practicing. That is me!

Q7: You are about to retire. What is your expectation of Taiwan or its youth?

1-5-8 There's always room for growth. Instead of talking about expectations, I prefer focusing on what we as individuals can do. We can do many things in our hometown. We don't have to ask about others' expectation toward young people. We should focus on the expectation of ourselves. What is our dream? In reality, life and time will deprive many of our things. The one thing they can never take away is our dream. We should never give up on our dreams!

Q8: We know that there are many outstanding dancers in Cloud Gate Theater. Who impresses you the most?

1-5-9 Each dancer is unique. I remember when I started the dance troupe, my mother did not have any opinions. She only asked me to promise her one thing. She said, "All dancers are their parents' precious one and you should cherish them." For me, each dancer is an important part of Cloud Gate. They devote their strength, mind and youth to give our dances soul and life.

Q9: Why did you select Cheng Tsung-lung as your successor?

1-5-10I selected Cheng Tsung-lung as the next artistic director because he has something that I desire: vitality on the street. He grew up in Monga, Wanhua and has watched buskers perform and temple festivals. His work 13 Tongues is full of this kind of energy. I hope that the new generation with their own ideas can create more pieces and let Cloud Gate Theater continue to live on. At the same time build up the cultural and artistic industry of Taiwan!

Q10: What is your suggestion for our project?

1-5-11Project research relies on reading many data and notes. You should recognize your own perspective and write in your own words. Each article should at least go through three drafts if you were serious about establishing your viewpoint. It is not important to be the winner of any award, because the key is what you have learned in the process. You must write down your ideas. There is no meaning in writing something you have obtained from Google. It is not necessary to write sophisticated articles. However, you should express your own perspectives. I look forward to seeing your final work!

Conclusion of interview

It is our honor to interview Mr. Lin Hwai-min before his retirement. When he was young, he founded Cloud Gate Theater to dance for the Taiwanese people. The troupe has lasted for half a century. As the director of Cloud Gate, he learned the importance of the dancers' body and movement and the feedback of the outdoor audiences. In order to perfectly present the pieces of choreography to the audiences. This process must be reviewed, modified and repeated each time. The dancers devote their blood, sweat and tears to give each choreography soul and life.

He told us that his philosophy of life is "simplicity" and the only way to do that is to fulfill the dream without hesitation. He encouraged us to simply accomplish things as the way he choreographs dance. When we fail, we can start over. We should not be afraid of failure and always persist in our dreams. At the end of this year, he will retire from the position of artistic director of Cloud Gate Theater. He hopes his successor will create more pieces with new ideas, bringing the cultural and artistic industry of Taiwan to the next level!
