In addition to ask master Lu Quan-En questions and transcribe them, the mission of visiting “Silver Star weather station” today also includes one very important task-taking a tour of weather instruments at “Silver Star weather station.” Observing weather requires a specific height. You cannot measure the correct wind speed if your instruments are blocked by nearby houses. Therefore, master Lu built his Silver Star weather station on the roof. We have to climb up on two ladders because of the heights. The space on the roof is limited, and each time it can only accommodate four people. We decide to go up in four groups. The female teacher accompanied with us has acrophobia. She is unable to climb up so she entrusts us the important task of taking photos of weather station including the overview and instruments. When we hear that weather station is above the ceiling, we all feel unbelievable! We look up at master Lu climbing up and opening a cover, and then a small space appears. Mr. Chong-Qin climbs up first, and classmates follow him one by one. We find out it is easier than we thought. The space on the roof is not big, “sparrow is tiny, but is born with completed organ in the body.” It contains every weather instrument in this small space, so only four people are allowed each time. Master Lu gives us a tour of every instrument, explaining its various functions. After we take photos of every instrument, the second group would take turns climbing up. Climbing down is actually more difficult than climbing up because the intervals between ladders are very small. After all of us finish our tour, we bid our farewell to master Lu, and thank him for his hospitality. We are on our way home with fulfillment and happiness!
Last time we finished our interview with weather master-Mr. Lu Quan-En. The interviewee this time is the teacher in charge of Hemei weather station-Mr. Zhang Zhi-Wei. After the experience of interviewing Mr. Lu Quan-En, we are more familiar with how to ask questions. Besides, Mr. Zhang is a teacher in our school, so we feel easier and more comfortable conducting the interview. Although we are junior high students in Hemei High School, we rarely have chances to be familiar with any knowledge about “Hemei weather station.” When Mr. Zhang Zhi-Wei introduces the origin of establishing Hemei weather station, we are all very concentrated on listening to his explanation. We all greatly admire his and others’ persistence and efforts to keep Hemei weather station continuously running. After the interview, Mr. Zhang gives us a tour of “Hemei weather station.” It is a rare opportunity for us to visit Hemei weather station because it does not open on normal day. We are very honored for this visit, especially it is on the top floor! He introduces every observation instrument to us during the visit. Although there are not many instruments at this station, they can measure various weather categories. We are in awe of the developed and convenient technology! We learn a lot of knowledge related to weather observation instruments from this interview. We get to know about the origin and history of Hemei weather station. We also realize that many people work hard and persist behind the establishment of a weather station!
The assignment this time is to design questions for the questionnaire. Questions have to be related to Master Lu’s Silver Star weather station and they have to be clear for respondents to answer. There should also be open-ended questions. They cannot be monotonous, unconstructive, or too complicated for respondents. We are really stumped by it! In the end we come up with ten questions respectively:Q1. Do you have any understanding or interest in weather? Q2. What kind of weather information do you usually pay attention to? Ex: Probability of precipitation, temperature‧‧‧etc Q3. Where do you usually follow the weather report? Ex: internet, television‧‧‧? Q4. Any weather hazards leave impressions on you? Q5. Following Q4, what are the impacts the hazard bring to your neighborhood? Q6. Have you ever heard of weather master Mr. Lu Quan-En? Q7. Have you ever heard of Hemei Silver Star weather station? Q8. Have you ever visited Silver Star weather station?Q9. Have you ever heard of other famous person in weather forecast? Q10. Have you ever followed the weather report on Mr. Lu Quan-En’s Facebook page? After finishing the questionnaire, we ask our classmates to fill out. Later, we collect them, analyze the result and present it as pie charts. This is our first time doing questionnaire. We hope it can go well!
It is near the end of our website production, so teachers specially spend time telling us the good and the bad part for every page, asking us to modify or to redo. At the same time they also ask us to take notes attentively, writing down every point he says. If we do not pay attention and take notes, it would render their lesson useless no matter how many times they tell us! Making website has to keep on revising and correcting so it can get better and better! We may have encountered many obstacles and difficulties, but as long as we work hard to overcome them, we will achieve wonderful result! We begin with no knowledge of making website to everyone can finish his or her own webpage independently. In this process, we devote a lot of time and energy to it. We don’t want all our works in vain, so we have to try our best in the final moment! Making website is actually not difficult. As long as we listen carefully and take notes to key points and steps from our teachers in the class, it is really simple. However, perfect presentation is not as easy! We work very hard, but our teachers are the real heroes! Every time we feel we finish the project, they can notice its shortcomings and insufficiency. They patiently spend time and effort on teaching us, enriching our website and making it more perfect! Without their guidance and support, we probably gave up a long time ago. “As you sow, so shall you reap.” We feel our hard work the last few months is nothing compare to their!
We started our cyber fair project in October, and it is already in February when we finish it. In these months, we grow from knowing nothing to a finished website. In between, both teachers and students have devoted a lot of heart and time to it. We still remember in the beginning we did not even hear of the term “cyber fair.” We did not know what to do and did not know any of our work partners. At first we feel quite boring and lack motivation or confidence. However, now we have wonderful relationships within each other. We work hard together to learn how to build our cyber fair project. After we finish our project, we suddenly feel it is really worth our efforts! Even though it is really difficult and agonizing during the process, we make through all the difficulties with determination! The final result is not the most important thing for us! Most important of all, we obtain many valuable skills and knowledge when we were learning and making the website. We also make some good friends with our team members through these discussions and teamwork! In the three years of junior high school, having a valuable experience and process like this is the thing we cherish the most! Educating students to learn and executing through the process of competition, isn’t it the true purpose of cyber fair? At this moment, we did it. What our Team Pika has achieved is beyond our own imaginations! |
