Captain plays the most important role in a team. Captain represents the team, issues orders on behalf of teachers, so captain is really important, we have to take our decision seriously! In the beginning, teacher advises us to nominate our candidates, but we are all very shy. Therefore, teacher decides to nominate Bing-You as our captain. Although he joins the team rather late, he has his own ideas and shows leadership. These are indispensible qualities as a captain. We can also learn from him, so we unanimously vote him as our team captain. Since we have a topic, next is work distribution. Three of our team members have experiences on independent study. They have better transcribing ability, so they are responsible for writing progress report. Rest members are divided into groups of two. They are responsible for other works according to six categories of our website structure. Our project had shaped up nicely at this moment, but the time we can meet together to work on the website is very limited. We have to seize every time we assemble because time waits for no man!
Our mission today is collecting information. Teacher gives us a hint on the extent of our search:”From Silver Star weather station, think of anyone or anything associated with it.” For example, weather data, terms, origin of Silver Star weather station, etc. We begin to research on different things separately, including weather phenomenon, observation instruments, and weather prediction. Many thoughts and discoveries continue to come out of our brains. Team Pika members search very seriously for about an hour. Even though we find many related websites and information, we can only use five of them. We have to rule out some repeated or sketchy websites. When we look at the information from Li Bing-You, we are amazed by how thorough they are. From weather phenomenon to the address and phone number of Silver Star weather station, his diligence should be our model. He really deserves to be our captain! Our junior classmates also find some nice information. These data we collected is the preparation for “mind map” in our next meeting. We are very excited about it.
Work goal today is to contact and ask master Lu Quan-En if he accepts our request for interview. Before teacher calls Mr. Lu, we are briefed on news reports related to him so we can learn more about him and the first private-owned weather station. We also discover his book “Weather in Taiwan” in the library, and it gives us more energy and confidence to do research! Teacher calls master Lu Quan-En, but no one answer the phone after it rings for a very long time. We are very agitated. If Mr. Lu is not willing to accept our request, we will have to face the dilemma on changing the topic! However, doing interview on location has to be at the right time, the right place, and with the right person. After all, master Lu Quan-En has a day job. He must be really busy. There is a saying that faith will move mountains, so we pray that he can take his spare time for us to conduct the interview. Everyone can have firsthand experience on the hard work of weatherman. We can visit this legendary private-owned weather station in person. After many attempts, teacher finally makes contact with master Lu. He kindly accepts our request after expressing our intention. He wants to help us on our investigation and this visit. We are all very excited and happy!
Today we divided collected information about Silver Star weather station into five headings:instruments, weather station, understanding weather, Mr. Lu Quan-En. Each one of us comes up with one or two subjects and writes it down on red sticky notes. Next we put similar ones together so we can sum up these five headings. After that, teacher asks us to brainstorm anything about Silver Star weather station and write down on blue sticky notes. For instance, weather proverbs, typhoon, historical data, and etc. We paste them on the poster with five headings and organize similar blue notes together. These red or blue notes could be headings of the website in the future. Everyone has an active discussion, and we all want our headings to be the headings of the website. Finally, teacher comes up with the sixth headings “Hemei Weather Station” because there is a small weather station in our Hemei High School. It is very convenient for us to arrange an interview or to obtain information. It is an important resource. Everybody discusses next progress mission. We decide to turn our progress mission “sticky note poster” into another poster -”mind map.” After discussing about mind map, we learn how to make one. We also learn to respect other’s opinions through active discussion. This discussion class really benefits us a lot!
According to the result of last meeting, we have six headings on our Silver Star weather station website:”Mr. Lu Quan-En,” “Silver Star Weather Station,” “Weather Tips,” “Hands-On Weather Study,” “Behind the Scenes,” and “Project Narrative.” There are many related subheadings under each heading. Each one of us has assignment on different subheadings according to our interests and expertise. We then search for information related to these subheadings. If we have to gather some of the information by interview or practical operation, we need to seize our chances when we interview master Lu Quan-En by asking him in person. Before the interview, we have to finish collecting data and organize our questions. We should make our interview transcripts in advance, in case we forget our question because we are too nervous! Although it is very easy to gather information on the internet, we need to filter out false information when we search. We cannot use the incorrect ones only for convenience. Besides, we have to add footnotes on quoting information. We respect copyright. If we violate regulations of intellectual property rights, there will be point deductions on the project! |
