Junyi Mathematics Club gathering - a reaching-the-top experience
Major of Taipei City, Mr Wen-je Ko put forward the policy of zero-homework for winter break in early 2016.  The concept has triggered Ms Shu-Chuang Chiang to come up with program called “Turning Changan up-side-down with Junyi Mathematics” which was a self-learning program based upon the Junyi platform during summer and winter breaks.  Before each term break, a letter describing the program objective was given to the parents of all Grade 4 to 6 pupils.  Scores of pupils were collected, analysed and put on leader board right after the breaks.  Followed by monthly statistics during each term, there were data that spanned across the year for each pupil.  Each pupil on the leader board was given an entry ticket to the Junyi Mathematics Club gathering.  Holder of the ticket is entitled to attend the gathering held in the computer classroom during designated lunch hours.  They navigate the platform by visiting the Junyi mathematics modules, joining the “Hour of Code” program or, take part in the mathematics related table games dedicated for the club members.  The table games include “7 ate 9 “, “Da Vinci Code”, SET, Absacker, SKY etc. which actually gave rise to the idea of the Junyi Mathematics Club.  The gatherings were held in a frequency that allows continual practice without causing too much interruption to activity-rest rhythm of pupils.
Our mission was to act as gatekeepers for these games.  Game players have to make use of arithmetic skills in the game.  Our job was to demonstrate the skills and guide our schoolmates.  We have to know the games in advance by playing with them ourselves and testing them out at the parts where mathematics was involved.  Those who did not take part in the table games can choose to work on the mathematics exercises on the platform.
Ms Jiang told us that those on the leader board are not entirely gifted or pupils with excellent academic grades.  A lot of them do not do well in examinations, have hyperactivity disorder symptoms or unhealthy family dynamics.  They may appear frequently on the leader board.  Junyi helps bring them together with those with excellent grades.  In the club, they play games, discuss questions, break codes during “Hour of Code” together.  This club enables a “reaching-the-top” experience for these children.  They take initiative to strive for opportunities.  This is very cool.
The fun and the sense of achievement lead to self-learning.  We, as gatekeepers, have to work harder to earn the tickets to the gathering.  All pupils are welcome to join the club.
