Interview
1.I understand that you have maintained shining academic records since you were young.  Can you tell us how you did it?  Did you sense any jealousy around you?  The “gifted child” label is always on your head, how did you adjust yourself to cope with it?
I think the knack is simple:  if you truly want it, you would put effort on your coursework otherwise there is hardly any way that can force you to spend effort on your coursework.  The need behind the motivation of my parent and teachers was not grades.  If I had wanted to mess up my future, there was hardly anything they can do about it since it was about my life.  I realized that pursuit of knowledge is my own business.  The knack for doing well in elementary education is to finish the task the day it comes up.  When one run into something difficult, find a way to tackle it.  Most of them can be comprehended and solved.  It would be a different knack when you reach junior high school.  Jealousy didn’t take place in my elementary school years.
The key issue with the label is not how others see you but how you see yourself.  Don’t ever try to show off.  You may offend other people.

2.You were among the top seven students in Taiwan admitted to faculty of medicine. What was the force that drove you to maintain the good result all those years? What do we need to do to provide result as good as yours?
One would want to work even harder once he or she obtains a sense of achievement from initial result. In simple terms, I’ve developed interest in coursework especially science subjects during my junior high school years. My grades were not bad. I can help my schoolmates by providing explanation on difficult stuff.  I’ve developed a sense of achievement which triggered myself to further improve my grades. My motive was to obtain an even stronger sense of achievement and I proceed to study harder.
It was lucky that I got quite good result which put me in a positive feedback loop. Good academic record naturally made me stand out and led to the idea that studying is good for me.  Such sense of achievement drove me to work harder for even better grades and the loop went on.  I admit that the loop may not be very positive.  One is supposed to overtake itself instead of comparing with others.  Pursuing knowledge is solely for the good of oneself instead of just for grades.
On every Monday, I would think about what I can do better during the rest of the week.  Can I be more efficient in my study?  How can I help my classmates?  Do I have a better question?  Better answer or better idea?

3.You formed a group of home tutors when you were in college. A number of your friends took part in the group which eventually turned into an operation that required management, held a profit and loss account, and led to retrenchment. What was it like at that time?Did it change your view about helping others?
I was pretty young and inexperienced at that time. The tutoring group was running low on funds and we decided to stop the parts of the operation that did not generate profit.  We even came to situation where we had to let go some staff. That was apparently a rational decision but I didn’t communicate well with others. Some of them were my classmates and friends who were pretty upset.  They realized the rationality of the decision but my way of handling didn’t take care of their feelings. It is important to take care of both rationality and human feelings.
I was not ready to realize my dream and I need to polish my skills. That was why I joined Cheng Zhi Education Fund to learn from Chairman Fang after graduation.
This year, I’ve become the manager of a business. I am a lot more experienced than I was 10 years ago.I am endowed with better people handling skills. The previous experience was a bit hard but I’ve learned from it and I know how to deal with if it should happen again. My advice is that one should listen to elders who are more experienced.  Sometimes one recalls advice from elders after failure where he took chance.  Those elders may have similar experiences or similar failure years ago.

4.What is the difference between home tutor and teacher? Do you expect better result from getting along with children in the role of elder brother or sister while you help them? How did you develop such an idea?
In one-on-one tutoring, I just have to take care of one person. If you have difficulty with question one, I will explain just question one.  If you are still not clear about it, I would explain again. If I am dealing with 20 pupils who differ in degree of readiness, person interests and learning tempo, I simply cannot fulfill the need of individual pupil. I can only pull off only one presentation. A teacher may be perceived himself as one who delivers such presentation in a profession manner, but he cannot be the little angel of each pupil.  The intimacy between one on one tutor and teacher are substantially different.
I prefer to make the delivery of elementary education in a way similar to tutoring. That was why I joined Junyi. The Junyi platform can become teaching assistant for children. The words of parents and teachers are generally well accepted by elementary school pupils.  The same may not work for junior high school and high school students. The roles of senior schoolmate, brother and sister can be perceived as study guide and are more easily accepted especially for junior high students and above.  Such strong acceptance would lead to stronger motivation.

5.How did you come up with the thought that the care for terminal patient is not about curing but establishing emotional interaction with his family while you were an intern? Can you share with us the story?
When patient’s life cannot be lengthened, we should focus on improving his family relationship.  During the last mile of his life, he still gets to have wish and fulfillment.
Terminal patient knows that he is leaving but not certain about whether it would take place the week after or even longer.  There are only 1 or 2 items on the bucket list. One of them is related to the relationships with those he loves and the second is whether the first wish would be fulfilled. I don’t want to live as I am told. I want to live a productive life that leaves the world with something. I don’t want regrets.

6.I understand that you are a Christian.  What about your family?  Does religion help?

Yes. I have a Christian family.  Religion forms the basis of my judgement. There are 3 “Ms” in life.  They are “Master”, “Mission” and “Mate”. Master affects what you think.  It can be religion, money or fame.  It denotes one’s perceptive value. My religion is my Master which affects what I see as important.
When one sees something that amounts to his value, a sense of calling arises. You may think that others do not see same value as you.  We all think education and medical treatment are both very important.  However, I think that people could use a helping hand to improve their potential for life elevation when they were younger. I feel a strong sense of calling for realizing this vision.
One may find someone in close proximity while he is on his own track.  Then they start walking together impromptuously.  Perhaps that somebody would be his Mate.  My wife is also a Christian.  We crossed path while we were pursuing our own missions which are also education related.  Then we become Mates.  One day when you grow up, you have to ask yourself about the 3 Ms.  What value do I embrace?  What is my mission?  Where is my other half?

7.You’ve made a number of science education videos yourself.  They went viral with huge number of views. Was that the reason why you gave up a career of a doctor to become a teacher behind camera?  A doctor saves a lot of lives while a teacher influences a lot of lives.  What do you see when you look back at that decision?
That seemed to be one of the reasons.  The other reason was related to my experience in the hospital.  Even if I wanted to help the underprivileged, there weren’t a lot I can do about them since they were already under medical care.  We were no longer in touch as soon as they were discharged.  On the other hand, education is a continuous process that lasts from elementary to high schools.
I would have made the same call if I were to do it again.  I believe there is hardly a standard answer for evaluating whether a decision is correct.  However, there are references for such decision: the number of persons I helped and the degree of personal contentedness.  The first one is a look from the outside whereas the second is my internal view.  Doctors and teachers can help a lot of people but in different hierarchical layers.  One is physiological and the other is mental.  Both are very important but I get higher contentedness from helping children.  That’s why I would have made the same decision.

8.Did your parent express dissatisfaction about you giving up a well-paid career?  Do they respect your decision?  Can you talk about your parent’s view on your education?
Perhaps my folks can benefit from it.They sees thing differently initially.  However, I am being responsible for my life.  Eventually, they respect my decision.  The career of a doctor seems well-paid at the moment.  Who knows if the current career would take off in 20 years!  Nobody knows.
