Eric Chung made an important decision while he was
on a
trip dedicated for international voluntary workers.
He
decided to leave the hi-tech industry to pursue something that reflects
value of life. He threw himself into education and wish that
every child endows joy through diversified and effective
learning. Let’s hear Eric’s story.
Interview
1.We
have doubt about learning mathematics. I bet you discovered
that
children have similar doubt. Can you share with us your
finding
regarding such prerequisite knowledge in various lines of business?
Mathematics enables you to determine if the amount you pay is correct,
if the change from the cashier is correct. It also enables to
determine the appropriate ratio of rice to water when you
cook.
Those are areas where you can apply what you have learned in
school. As you go up the education latter, you will come
across
more complicated knowledge. I’ve got very special experience
when
I was in volunteering. I was building a house and didn’t know
what materials would avoid water from leaking into the house.
I
found out afterward that I’ve come across it in high school
chemistry. It was calcium carbonate which can be applied on
the
walls to preventing leakage.
We would know if the knowledge we learned in school are important only
when we want to apply them. Water-proofing a house can be as
simple as that. Ask yourself how you apply knowledge in the
textbooks in the future instead of treating them as materials for
getting through lessons and examinations.
2.I
found that all Junyi team members gave up their promising job to devote
themselves to Junyi. I wonder what charm Junyi did to you
guys?
When I was in elementary school, I could only go back home to study by
myself if I didn’t get something during lessons. I might ask
my
classmates for help sometimes. I had nowhere to go if it
turned
out my classmates didn’t have the answer too. If the same
shall
happen to you, what would you do? If you dare not ask the teacher, you
can ask the Junyi platform for help. I believe that matters
to me.
3.You
are now working in the content development team. Can you
describe
the role of the team? What are the functions and the operation model?
Major subjects are determined in advance by the team. We do
not
have sufficient staff and resources for all the subjects and
questions. We can start only with the important
ones. The
reason why we’ve started mathematics first is that children nowadays
find mathematics very difficult and tiresome. What teacher
said
may have been forgotten instantaneously. They go back home
with
nothing to guide them through the exercise.
If one wants to achieve an objective, he ought to have an idea of the
prerequisite. He has to practice the necessary skill over and
over again. He has to be able work it out
correctly. In the
case he does not get it right, he needs someone to remind him and tell
him the correct route of thinking. If necessary, tell him the
correct answer eventually. Say for an example that you are
learning arithmetic division, you have to learn subtraction first but
not the other way round. The necessary skill is
subtraction. There are various functions in the
team. Some
works on graphic design whereas some on question design etc.
4.The
Junyi platform is suitable for all pupils regardless level of
readiness. It is an online platform that can be personalized
to
fit with individual user. If a pupil wants to learn ahead of
school syllabus, he may runs into a situation where there is no human
guidance. Would Junyi be providing on-line instructors?
That has been discussion internally. Take an analogy, if a
pupil
runs into a question when there is no teacher in the
classroom.
Having looked into detailed of the corresponding note and video, he
still cannot sort it out by himself. Under such
circumstances, he
needs someone to help him. At certain stage, we might allow
self-help among the children. We will think of something in case that
doesn’t work out. On-line tutoring is one of the
possibilities.
5.There
are over 10 thousand videos in the platform. Over 60% to 70%
of
them were produced by existing teachers. How did you plan and
select your desired content? How did you match them
systematically with pupils at various stages?
It is highly difficult to re-design a syllabus. Textbooks
from
publisher have been vetted and approved by ministry of education. Some
outstanding teachers have taken part in the discussion of the syllabus
which is a collection of the important content and topics that pupils
have to study in a school term. These content and topics will
be
further elaborated and designed before being published by
publisher. From textbooks, teaching aids to individual
stories
therein have to be detailedly designed.
Junyi works in a similar fashion. We perform our own design
with
reference to the syllabus and reference materials. However,
our
design may differ in pattern. We use computer through which user
responds to questions. The computer tells the user what to do
next or provides hint when he press a particular button. It
is
just like a teacher sitting next to and guiding him along the
way. The questions were created by partners of the content
development team.
6.You
seemed to have taken part in the onsite interaction between teacher and
pupils. Is that part of the content development
team? How
did you interact with them?
It is the marketing team that takes part in this kind of
activities. The education team joins up sometimes.
The
primary reason is to obtain feedback from teachers and pupils in terms
of usability, relevancy of the content. We will make
adjustment
with reference to the feedback.
