Daxi Dried Tofu Festival

The 2018 Daxi Dried Tofu Festival

Taoyuan City has a reputation for its soy bean enterprises, and Daxi Dried Bean Curd is a traditionally well-known snack for tourists in Taiwan. The Taoyuan City government promoted the local food business and the culture of Daxi through Daxi Dried Tofu Festival in 2018. There were a lot of interesting activities in the festival to attract tourists. By raising awareness of the event through mass media, the government hoped to increase the visibility of Daxi Dried Bean Curd. Foreign tourists were offered dried bean curd and encouraged to participate in the activities. We hope that people around the world will come to Daxi to have fun and enjoy dried bean curd in the near future.

For two consecutive weekends, March 17, 18, 24, and 25 in 2018, the Daxi Dried Tofu Festival was held in Daxi Chong-Chen Park. (The alternative term for ‘dried tofu’ is ‘dried bean curd.’) During the event, information about dried bean curd was divided into four themes: Creative and Diverse Products, Local Culture, Food Technology, and Favorite Bean Products. Tourists came here to experience the unique taste of dried bean curd.

Below are the reports from various media outlets about the 2018 Daxi Dried Tofu Festival. (Photos shown below were screenshots from each respective website or video. The other photos which weren’t attached to the website were taken by Teacher Elisa and the students.)

The Daxi Dried Tofu Festival took place in Daxi Chong-Chen Park. The four topics included the Daxi Food Feast, Origin of Bean Product, Longevity and Peace, and Food Creativity. There were many activities at the festival, such as a parade, hands-on workshops, displays of Daxi traditional woodenwares and toy tops. Tourists could experience other facets of Daxi in addition to its bean products.

The 2019 Daxi Bean Curd Festival was held on March 16, 17, 23, and 24. (The government changed the name of the Festival from ‘Daxi Dried Tofu’ to “Daxi Bean Curd’ in 2019. The alternative term for ‘bean curd’ is ‘tofu.’) The four theme topics (literal translation) are Hundred Year Collaboration, Hundred Year Good Food, Hundred Year Good Shows, and Hundred Year Good Art. This year, the Taoyuan government collaborates with the government of Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County and Miaoli County to hold the festival. Therefore, visitors can taste the representative food of these four cities, which means that they have a chance to eat not only dried bean curds but also meat balls, rice noodles, and crystal dumplings here.

||-The mayors showed up.

We (Teacher Elisa and the students) participated in the first day of the festival and also took a lot of photos. We tasted some food and shopped at the food stands. We felt excited when the mayors showed up and recommended the local specialties to us. We also saw the bean curd mascot which is cute and friendly. The show on the sumo court was the aboriginal dance, showing indigenous Taiwanese’s way of life. Though it was raining in the afternoon, we still enjoyed ourselves. Alas, you missed the festival. Nonetheless, the festival for bean products has been held every year since 2015. If you are interested in the festival, you are welcome to join us and have fun in March 2020!
