The founder of Huang Ri-Xiang was Huang Wu, who established the brand in 1924. Now it is in its fourth generation, and the fifth generation has helped with the ongoing operation. The founder cast crescent-moon blocks (Zhì xiáo) to decide how to divide his worldly processions among his children. Huang Bo-Hung was the youngest child and he was bequeathed the bean curd business. He took over from his father in 1959, becoming the second generation of Huang Ri-Xiang at Daxi. The development of Shimen Reservoir and the arrival of former President Chiang Kai-shek in Daxi in 1969 caused the rise of the tourism industry. A large number of people visited Daxi, so the second generation decided to expand the business of Huang Ri-Xiang. In addition to black dried bean curd, new products were added, such as dried bean curd for snacks. In the beginning, they packed the dried bean curd purchased from other places. Gradually, they opened their own factory. A few years later, the second generation asked their sons to learn the technology, and the technology has been passed to the fourth generation now. They later even added a new product - fermented tofu.

Ms. Shu-Jun Huang told us that because of the sightseeing in Cihu and the visit of former President Chiang Kai-shek, dried bean curd became popular with tourists and the sales prospered. The birthplace of “Huang Ri-Xiang” is on No.56, Heping Road, Daxi, and the owner still make black dried bean curd there. Adhering to the traditional style and constant improvement, they have not only added equipment to increase production, but also made various flavors of dried bean curd products. At present, Huang Ri-Xiang has a 1,600-Ping plant (1 Ping = 3.3057 square meters) that supplies a variety of healthy dried bean curd products to consumers. The sale has expanded one Huang Ri-Xiang store to more than 100 stores. People can also buy dried bean curd products at convenience stores, such as Family Mart. Fermented tofu is also available overseas. “We inherit the business philosophy of our grandfather and manage the quality of the dried bean curd. Our product quality must be good. If we ensure good quality of our product, then customers will be our best advertising staff”, said Ms. Huang. She hopes the fifth generation to not only keep their enthusiasm for the dried bean curd business but also create a new marketing strategy.
