Daxi

The original name of Daxi District is Takoham (pronounced as Da Gu Xian). Its name originated from Pinpu, and it was named after its river. During Qing Dynasty in the era of Qianlong Emperor (乾隆), people from Quzhou (漳州), Fujian Province started cultivating the land along Dahan (大漢) River. People did not favor ‘ham’ (Xian) in Ta-ko-ham because it meant ‘pitfall’ or ‘sink,’ so they substituted the word ‘ham’ with ‘kan,’ indicating the topography of Daxi. In 1920, the Office of the Taiwan Governor General changed the name into Daxi, which is still being used today.
