Made From Fragrances

Each kind of incense products is made in different ways, among which incense sticks are the most common for religious purposes. The manufacture of incense sticks is entirely handmade as described below.

(a) Proportion the Fragrances
The proportion of fragrances is usually a secret formula handed down from one’s ancestors and is also the key factor for making incense sticks. The fragrances applied in the manufacture are basically compounded of Sandalwood, Agilawood and the other sorts.

(b) Make the incense body
First, dip the bamboo sticks in the water and coat them with the bark powder. Second, fan out the incense sticks like a sector and roll them over the fragrance powder to ensure the powder is adhered to the body of each incense stick evenly.

Then, roll the incense sticks over the fragrance powder again and check. Nowadays some incense artisans make use of machines to roll over the incense sticks for better work performance.

(c) Dry the incenses
Spread the powder-coated incense sticks on the wooden racks and dry them.

(d) Dye the incense stick butts
Tie the dried incense sticks in bundles and dip the uncoated stick butts into a dyeing vat. Then dye them pink.

(e) Dry the incense stick butts
Spread the dyed incense sticks and dry them on the ground.

  CHIA-WAN:

Interestingly, the first word “Luo” in “Luo-nian-xiang” (LNX) has a similar pronunciation with “落” (lo̍h) in Taiwanese, which denotes “putting things down”. And that just describes the step in which bamboo sticks are dipped in the water and dyeing vat.
