Magical Bark Powder

  CHIA-WAN:

At the beginning of this project, our knowledge about LNX is limited. The first query is whether LNX is made of clay or sawdust. After interviewing Sachet Master Shi Jianhong, he told us that quite many people mistake the sawdust for yellow clay considering their similar colors, consequently wrongly addressing LNX as tu-nian-xiang (a sticky mixture of bark powder and clay).

  HO-JUAN:

Our second query is how the mixture of wood sawdust and water becomes sticky. Sachet Master Shi Jianhong revealed that the secret is the natural adhesive—the bark powder of Phoebe zhennan. Waving goodbye to Master Shi, we went back to school to quest for further information and discussed this with our project advisor. The advisor suggested that we could pay a visit to incense shops.

Sauntering along Shan-hang Street in Lukang on a relaxing afternoon, we saw a special blossoming flower halfway. “What is that?” We drew close with a careful look at it, finding that it was a tied bundle of incense sticks spread outward like a flower. A man standing by told us he was drying the incense stick butts (the pink area). Not until we conversed with him did we know he was Incense Master.
