The driving force behind Junyi>Software development, Mr Benny Hsiao, Software Engineer
Software development, Mr Benny Hsiao, Software Engineer
Origin
Mr Benny Hsiao wants to devote his energy to education in Taiwan.  He wishes that the combination of technologies and education can trigger a strong motivation for pupils in learning and bring about better result and aptitude.  Let’s see how a software engineer helps develop the Junyi platform to help the unprivileged children.

Interview
1.What is your curriculum in University of Communications?  You mentioned that education is no longer just about reading textbook and getting through lessons and examinations.  What is education to you?
I studied electrical engineering.  Everyone has his favorites including thing, place and subject.  He must have objectives too.  I believe education is a way that helps one to achieve his own objectives.

2.Teach for Taiwan (“TFT” hereinafter) is an organization established by Ms Anting Liu for provision of education services in rural area.  When did you take part in the TFT’s training?  Have you been to a school in rural area?
I took part in a training 4 years ago.  Actually I haven’t serviced the rural area.  There are two kinds of recruitees.  One of them includes those who become teachers in rural areas.  The other comprises those who become reserves only due to various reasons including lack of school vacancies.  They have the potential to become teachers.  I belonged to the latter group.  I took part in a training that lasted for more than a month.

3.Why did you join Junyi?  What has appealed to you?
I heard of the Junyi platform while I was in the training.  I was pretty impressed at that time.  The other reason was the TFT and Junyi knows each other.  Tian-lin of Junyi learned that I have an engineering background and considered me a possible candidate for a position in Junyi since the platform is a website and has something to do engineering.  Then I had a conversation with Mr Ray Lu, CEO of Junyi.
I believe that engineering is closely related to Junyi’s objective.  I write computer program for Junyi. I think Junyi fits well with me.

4.What is your idea of education?  Is it close to what Junyi is doing?
I believe learning at desired tempo of every child is the ideal model of education.  Some are fast learner whereas some take longer.  The fast learner can choose to learn more or be promoted to next level.  It is ok for the slower ones who take their time to continue at the tempo that each of them chooses.  The can still move up the ladder slowly.
Junyi is working towards that although still a bit far from the ideal model.  Anyway, we are going in that direction.

5.For how long have you joined Junyi?  I understand that your title is Frontend Explorer?  What is the job description?  What does the software development team do?
I’ve been working for Junyi for almost 4 years.  Frontend Explorer is about the interfaces of the platform but not the videos.
Software Development covers a lot of tasks.  We cover interfaces, usage and analysis.  We perform analysis on data that let us know whether users like or dislike a certain video.  We do webpage design and produce pretty images that attract children.
Designer holds hand with Frontend Explorer.  Designer makes pretty pictures whereas we produce the electronic image.  Another team is supposed to discuss with teachers and pupils about the desirable features and feedback.  The resulting suggestions will be incorporated in upcoming design which subsequently will be available online.

6.The Junyi platform was put online in 2012.  Apart from the reference framework from Kahn Academy, how did you build the website?
Junyi holds a conference every year to decide the objectives for the following year.  Once decided, detailed plans shall be passed along to different team.  The other is the feedback mechanism.  We want to know user’s opinion, e.g. one find a wrong question or answer, a mismatched video.  User would let us know by pressing a particular button that triggers the mechanism, e.g. a teacher thinks that certain function is clumsy and gives us suggestion.  He shall be asked to fill in description that will be sent to the operations management team.  Such message will be retrieved every day.  Operation management team will notify the marketing team which will summarize and provide us with change request.  We will make such change accordingly.

7.You were a teacher which is a frontend job.  You have a backend job now.  Does it deviate from your original expectation?
I think it is still within my expectation.  I love this domain very much.  One of the way to get into this domain is becoming a teacher. However, there are other ways to devote my energy.  I believe being a software engineer is pretty much my cup of tea.  I believe I will stay a software engineer.

8.If budget is not a concern, how would you build the Junyi platform?
I would hire a team to create animations that make the website more vivid and lively.  Then more pupils would get on the platform.  Subsequently, we would hire some teammates that enrich our videos by recording, producing and drawing animations.

9.My mother disapproves the use of computer and related products.  She prefers conventional means to Junyi.  I’m sure there are other mothers like mine. Can you give us a hand?
Learning does not involve sitting in front of the screen for a long time. I don’t want you to act that way.  Learning is something that one should do every day in fixed duration and schedule.  You can benefit from it by spending 30 or 15 minutes on the Junyi platform every day.  Your mother may concern about your eye-sight and doesn’t want prolonged usage.  As long as one manages the time spent in front of the screen, it shouldn’t be a problem.

10.You want to motivate pupils to learn by themselves by combining technologies and education.  Do you think the vision has been realized?
Not yet but we are on the right track already.

11.If we are interested in software and game design, would Junyi be providing such course?  What is your recommendation?
There are content related to program design.  Game design, on the other hand, falls into a very sophisticated domain and is substantially difficult. It is not impossible but such course has not been planned or scheduled.  One can easily get hold of such information using google search.

12.We want to help Junyi.  What suggestions do you have for us?
Give us more feedback and get on-line more often.

Conclusion
Participation in TFT has motivation people them to devote themselves to education.  Mr Benny Hsiao is one of them.  Although he is not a frontline teacher, he put a lot of effort in the software development for the Junyi platform which is just another way to achieve the same objective.
