The Difficulty of Becoming a Medical Student
According to President of Kaoshiung Medical University, there are 1300 high school graduates entering medical schools every year, and every student could apply for up to six medical schools at once. As a result, the total of these high school graduates participating interview is 2099, which causes social resources to be wasted. Many students complain that they have to spend a whole lot of money just for signing up, and the exhaustion caused by traveling around Taiwan for the interviews finally lead to questioning. Are these interviews really necessary for medical schools to select who is to make a proper medical student?
Here is another problem. In order to acquire high-quality high school graduates, medical schools provide students who stood out in the General Scholastic Ability Test with scholarships and all sorts of preferential. However, does getting high marks in the exam make these students good doctors in the future? Why not use the money to support poverty-stricken students?
Moreover, because of the fact that each student gets to apply for up to six medical schools, high-ranking schools get a whole lot of students while low-ranking ones hardly get any.
Medical schools select students who ought to be suitable to become a doctor by interviewing them, which is not a bad thing. In spite of that, interviewing is quite a hard work, which requires a huge amount of strength and time. On the other hand, Taiwanese high school graduates are not similar to western countries’, in other words, they simply aren’t that prepared to participate in the society, which is why medical schools should not allow so many students to attend interviews, not until students and society are fully ready to accept this method.
