庭院深深深幾許，Deep, deep the courtyard where he is,
楊柳堆煙，簾幕無重數。 It's veiled by countless, curtains of smoke-like willows,
玉勒雕鞍遊冶處。Leaving his carved saddle and jaded bridle, there he has been merry-making.
樓高不見章台路。From my tower, I cannot see he on the road to brothels houses.
雨橫風狂三月暮。The wind and rain are raging in this late March,
門掩黃昏，無計留春住。 At dusk I bar the gate, but I can't ask Spring to stay.
淚眼問花花不語，My tearful eyes ask flowers but they fail to bring an answer.亂紅飛過秋千去。Only the red blossoms fall beyond the swing.

About the poet: Ou Yang Xiu
 Ou Yang Xiu, courtesy name Yong Shu, was an outstanding politician, litterateur, and historian in North Song Dynasty. Ou Yang promoted the poetry revolution movement that drastically changed the styles of literary works during the end of Tang Dynasty to the beginning of Song Dynasty. He was very important in the history of Chinese Literature. His works impacted the future generations tremendously.

About the poem:
‘Butterfly In Love With Flowers’ describes the feeling of a girl. Some said that Ou Yang was describing his own feelings. The first few verses talks about how he lived a life without much contact with the outside world. The final few verses depicted how the author had no one to talk to so he ended up telling his sorrow to flowers. From this poem, we could feel how sad the author really was.

From interviews with Teacher Allegro Chu, I found that his favorite song was ‘Butterfly In Love With Flowers.’ He said a slow song is better at expressing the essence of the poem. When I listened to the song, I tried really hard to understand the meaning of the poem. I felt that I could fully understand how the poet must have felt when he wrote the poem. In HanGuang’s video, they started quite freely, but near the end, their voices suddenly changed, expressing the sorrow of the poet. That was the best part in this song, and it made me want to listen to it again and again. |
