HanGuang ‘Full River of Red’-Training Workshop

Lead 1:Lin, Jin-Ying (Role in the song: Lead, classical version)

Style of presentation: 【Mellow, not too flashy】
Jin-Ying’s voice got him the lead in this song. According to Teacher Allegro, the person playing General Yue Fei, which is a righteous character, needs to have a mellow voice without being overly flashy.

Getting into the song:

Follow the tune to get into character

After hearing the song, Jin-Ying got into the song effortlessly. ‘Full River of Red’ has a bit of rock and roll flavor to it, so he listened to some rock and roll music just to get himself into the groove. Then, he imagined himself being an ancient general. Although it might seem a bit conflicting, but he still tried to fuse the two roles together. He also watched a movie about Yue Fei and then imagined himself as Yue Fei. This helped him get deeper into his character.
Training on the poem: Every time we get a new song, we will first try to understand the background and story behind the poem. If that’s still not enough, we will seek help from Director Chu or other band members. Take ‘Full River of Red’ for example, we first study the story about Yue Fei, and since we are portraying a character in ancient times, our performance should not have excessive hand gestures. We need to stand up-right on stage to resemble the character, like an imposing general.

Lead 2:Huang, Ching-Yuan (Role in the song:Lead, modern version)

Style of presentation: 【Modern, relaxing】
Ching-Yuan is the second lead in ‘Full River of Red.’ The song was originally written with one lead, but Teacher Allegro, Chu thought that would be too ordinary, so he added a second lead to highlight a contrast between classical and modern. In terms of song interpretation, Ching-Yuan sings the song in a more lively and modern manner to converse with Jin-Ying through the song.
Getting into the song:

A modern character conversing with Yue Fei】

Ching-Yuan first learned about the essence and diction of the poem, then he adopted a modern stance when singing the song. He treated every verse as having a conversation with Yue Fei, so he seemed very relaxed, very into the song.

Alto:Lee, Hsing-Lei (Role in the song: Alto, harmony)

Style of presentation: 【Harmony, electric guitar】
In this song, Hsing-Lei uses quite a bit of her true voice. She sings the song with more firmness and mimics a voice crack with a hoarse voice. Since there is a part where she has to accompany the song mimicking an electric guitar, she has to make some long sound just to get it right.

Getting into the song:

A modern character conversing with Yue Fei】

Hsing-Lei said since every one was quite familiar with Yue Fei’s ‘Full River of Red,’ it was not difficult for them to get into the song. Besides the lead, every one else was more focused on the music itself. While singing, they injected the heart and spirit of Yue Fei into the song, and then modernized it. Also, since Yue Fei is a national hero, so when they sing the song, they need to show some strength and tenacity in their body language.

Bass:Robin (Role in the song: Bass)

Style of presentation: 【Chord, electric guitar】
Like Jing Hua, Robin’s role in this song is bass. He thinks the song will sound great with bass because there are changes in chord. His voice is really low, so his part in bass can really kick the song into a nice groove.

Getting into the song:

Filling in with lots of strong emotion】

Robin said in ‘Full River of Red,’ he needs to fill his part with strong emotion. He can’t just hum through the song. He needs to be more dramatic, like raging waves crashing onto shore. He will inject his part with emotion on some accents to make every note tenser, and this will create a feeling of power, just like soldiers charging on a battlefield.
