First Encounter

First Encounter

In the summer of 2014, students, teachers, and directors on the Cyberfair team made a trip to Chuanghua to claim our "2014 International Cyberfair" award. Parents of Oliver, one of the students on the team, joined us on the trip. Oliver’s father, Mr. Jerry Chu, who was the executive director of HanGuang Vocal Band, gave everyone a CD by HanGuang Vocal Band. He tirelessly told us about how enthusiastic and persisting this a cappella band was about fusing Chinese classical poetry with music.

After we got back to school, we listened tentatively to the beautiful music recorded by HanGuang Vocal Band, and everyone was mesmerized by it. The sounds of water, birds, and bugs singing in the prelude of 'Restful Mind as Clouds and Water' and the sounds of erhu fiddle, bass, guitar, and drum all resonate from the mouth of each performer. We were deeply amazed.

Ms.Yang of Yu-Tsai choir once told us about how difficult it was to have a choral performance in a cappella. So we decided unanimously to choose "HanGuang Vocal Band" as our topic for the 2015 Cyberfair.

Invitation

After confirming HanGuang Vocal Band as our research topic, each one of us wrote a short message on an invitation card and sent them to Director Chu. In no time, we received a reply from HanGuang Vocal Band, agreeing to perform at Yu-Tsai. The band even invited us to attend the "Taipei South Town Art Festival 2014 - The Contemporary Art of Chinese Characters," Zhongshan Hall concert, and band practices on Saturdays.
