Song title: A Spray of Flowers (Not giving in to old age)- coda

Song selected by : Andrea

I’m a tough old bronze bean that can still go boing, steamed but so softened, stewed but not mushed, whacked but not flattened, baked but not popped.

Who let you boys worm your way in- That you can’t chop off, and you can’t cut down

and you can’t wriggle out, and you can’t untie? To the brocade noose of a thousand coils

The moon of Liang’s park is what I enjoy,Kaifeng wine is what I drink, Luo-yang’s flowers are what I like,Zhang-tai’s willows are what I pick.

Me, I can play the game of “Go,I can play soccer, I can hunt,I can be a comedian, I can dance,

I can play stringed instruments, I can sing, I can recite poems, I can play Backgammon.

You can, knock out my teeth, scrunch up my mouth,Lame my legs, break both my hands:

天賜與我這幾般兒歹癥候,尚兀自不肯休。
But Heaven bestowed on me this gift. For vice in each assorted kind,So still I’ll never quit.

Or else the King of Hell ask for me personally,

My three souls sink to Earth below, My seven spirits float away into the murky dark,

Then, Heaven, that’s the time, I’ll walk the lanes of misty flowers no more.

About the poet: Guan Han-Qing

Guan Han-Qing lived in the period near the end of Jin Dynasty and beginning of Yuan Dynasty. He was honored as the leader among the four famous composers of Yuan poetry. Before becoming famous by writing ‘Injustice to Dou E’ as a playwright, he used to be a doctor in the imperial hospital. He had also written quite a few dramas about history, most notably ‘Meeting the Enemy Alone’ and ‘Western Sichuan Dream.’ The subjects that he touched on in his plays came from a very wide range, and he wrote comedies and tragedies as well. His materials are often used in plays or drawings nowadays. He is a poet with a big impact on the present.

About the poem:

This one was written when Guan Han-Qing was in his middle age. At that time, aristocrats of Yuan Dynasty looked down on the Hans, and there were also lots of wars causing national examinations to be suspended. Therefore, this group of educated elites believed they were born in the wrong time, with no room to show off their talents. Their lives became hard, and this elite circle began to crumple. Guan’s poems show his unique way of life of searching for the meaning of life in his dissipated living. His perseverance broke the traditional life style, sought after by many academics at that time, of gaining recognition and then retiring anonymously. The poem uses lively analogies to show the talents of an academic with a harsh, humorous, and funny taste that was common in folk songs. The first verse is the best reflection on Guan’s tenacious and stubborn personality. And it was his personality that made his writing touches the hearts of many.

‘A Spray of Flowers’ afterthoughts:

I think the opening of this song was great with percussion making it very lively. The first and second verses adopt a very fast beat to show Guan Han-Qing’s personality. The first verse ‘bronze pea’ was interpreted very well, and the third and fourth verses adopt a lighter manner to depict the author’s feeling of being on the loose. The following parts change to a slower tempo to make listeners aware of the author’s stubbornness. Unless the dynasty made some changes, this awesome feeling would never go away. The reason I like this song so much is that its tempo changes from slow to fast, which is a good representation of the author’s feeling. It also shows the vigor of being the leader among the four famous composers of Yuan poetry, and this made the song even more pleasing to the ear.
