Tung Yang BBQ Store
In the early days, people who lived in Taipei City went to traditional markets during the holidays. People shopped, bought daily necessities, and ate traditional cuisine. The Chengzhong Traditional Market is a famous traditional market in Taipei City Walls. Taipei City Walls is a fortress established in 1884, and it was constructed during the Ching dynasty. Although the business in the Chengzhong Traditional Market has gradually declined, there is a store next to the market now called Hsin Tung Yang, which is one of the most famous meat production firms in Taiwan.

In the 1960’s dried pork floss and Cantonese BBQ were products that only a few wealthy families could afford. The founder of Hsin Tung Yang, Mai Hsin-Fu and his brothers, knew how to make dried pork floss and Cantonese BBQ. They went to the Chengzhong Traditional Market and began selling dried pork floss and Cantonese BBQ. Mai Hsin-Fu found a way to keep the dried pork floss hot after the consumers purchased them, and this was a strong selling point at that time.

After they earned more and more money, Mai Hsin-Fu bought a store and named it Tung Yang Cantonese BBQ. The store was in front of the Chengzhong Traditional Market because Mai Hsin-Fu thought the location of the store was very important. Mai Hsin-Fu’s idea has also affected Hsin Tung Yang’s decision in selecting its store locations later on. If you carefully look at the location of Hsin Tung Yang’s branches, you will discover that they are all near MRT stations.
The kingdom of Hsin Tung Yang started here at the Chengzhong Traditional Market. The popularity of Hsin Tung Yang’s dried pork floss and Cantonese BBQ began here. The old store of Tung Yang Cantonese BBQ is now renamed as Hsin Tung Yang’s Wuchang branch. The Mai family has great affection for this very first store, Tung Yang Cantonese BBQ, and they pay the visit every month.
