Cultural literacy is like the DNA of design. Though somewhat hidden, it is the deciding factor of
whether the quality of design could be manifested or not.
Preparation The Interview Afterthoughts

 I. The planning of the interview process

 Before interviewing Professor Lin, our parents reminded us to do some studies and think about how the process of the activity is going to be held. Therefore, we made a flow chart and followed the steps while carrying out the interview.

Background information

1. Why are you interested in the design of CI and why are you so devoted in this field?
2. Has the passion for photography of your father had any effect on your development of art and design?
3. Have you ever hit the wall in your career? What was the biggest challenge in your career of design? How did you overcome it? Should student start learning design in elementary school? How could elementary student start learning design?
4. Has your growing up experiences influenced your design career? What are some key elements that a person required in order to become one of the best design talents?
5. How do you start when you are designing CI? Could you use the example of Chunghwa Post Co., Ltd. and Chunghwa Telecom to explain?
6. Are there any differences in ideals and methods between the design of enterprise and the design of art?

4. Your wife and you both studied in the Department of Fine Arts in National Taiwan Normal University. Did your wife give you a great amount of support during your process of creation? Do your three young daughters give you any new ideas from their point of views?

2. When you were drawing the collection of My Taiwan, was there a particular painting that you were most satisfied with? Why?
3. Among all your CI designs, for example: Chunghwa Telecom, 3M and Wei Chuan Foods Corporation, one of my favorite CI is the one for Wei Chuan Foods Corporation. You designed five red circles to symbolize Wei Chuan. How did you come up the idea?
4. When you are designing CI for a company, where does your inspiration come from?
5. When taking the college entrance exam, you chose to study fine arts. Were your parents worried about your future on whether you could make ends meet?
6. You designed the CIS for Ting Hsin International Group 20 years ago in 1994. Do you think a CIS should be redesigned and evolved as the time goes by?

In addition to the time you put into creating, you have also devoted so much time in developing the design education in Taiwan and founded Department of Visual Design of National Taiwan Normal University. What are your thoughts on the design environment and education in Taiwan comparing with other foreign countries?
3. On the aspect of cultivating international visual art talents, what would you suggest the board of education of Taiwan should do and alter?
4. You mentioned that Taiwan needs not to compete the size of area with other countries but to use our soft power of culture to become the international “magnetic field”. By “magnetic field”, do you mean the place of attraction? How do we achieve that goal?
