【Arch of Heaven and Star Atlas】Marketing Taiwan

Traveling is where the heart leads, the greater your mind is, the bigger the stage will be.

Since 1980, Professor Lin has devoted himself to promoting work of design education across the Taiwan Strait. He proposed that the industry of design is divided into upper, middle and lower stream. The upper stream is like the main reel rim that drives the reel rim in middle and lower stream. Professor Lin preferred to be the role of the main reel rim, thus he joined the Corporate Identity System (CIS) design. In addition to the CIS planning across the Taiwan Strait, to fully play the effect of the role as the “main reel rim,” Professor Lin also took part in the Culture and Creative Industries policies which was moved forward by Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Economics Affair R.O.C..

 Marketing Taiwan

Another internationally recognized talent of Professor Lin is creating memorable posters. In the summer of 1989, when the whole nation were excited for A City of Sadness which is a Taiwanese historical drama film directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien that won the award in Venice International Film Festival, however, Professor Lin felt saddened. As he looked around the nations near Taiwan, Japan and Korea had already been showing the world their own unique culture traits and color. On the other hand, the sovereignty of Taiwan on the international scale had shrunk, the internal identification of the people for the country had disunited, related cultural discourses had avoided discussing the topic, as the consequences, Taiwan still remained a vague existence among the global international countries.

To establish and promote the image of Taiwan, in 1991, Professor Lin invited his former college classmates, Chiu Yong-Fu, Gao Sheng-Sat, Ye Guo-Song and You Ming-Long to find Taiwan Image Poster Design Association. The spirits of the association are “Loving Taiwan, Respecting Local and Caring Design.” The design topics are close related to traditional Taiwanese culture. The association set the beginning of the Taiwanese poster design wave.

In 1992, Shenzhen city of southern China hosted 92 Graphic Design in China exhibition, Professor Lin hoped to use this opportunity to showcase the diverse sides of Taiwan. Many other designers also joined the creation team under his encouragement. Hereafter, they used different poster theme design exhibitions to explore many Taiwanese issues and social trends. The themes ranged from, environmental conservation, color, child protection, communication, anti-drug and so on. These eye-popping and clearly-messaged Taiwanese image creation posters undoubtedly became the international identification symbols for Taiwan. From then on, it attracted many other cities in China to imitate the style.

 Establishing Asian Design Platform

In addition to establish the image of Taiwan, expanding international exchange and bringing the design of Taiwan to the international stage are also the missions that Professor Lin holds dear to his heart. In 1994, together with Nakanishi Motto and Korean designer Cho Yong-Je who was the designer in chief of 1988 Summer Olympics also know as Seoul Olympics, Professor Lin founded Asia Corporate Identity Coalition (ACIC) in Beijing to promote the development of corporate identity in China. This accomplishment won him a very high praise in the design world of China. From 2001 t0 2003, Professor Lin was elected to serve the position of board of directors of Chief Financial Officer in International Council of Graphic Design Association (ICOGRADA) . This is the first time that Taiwan was admitted as a country into membership of board of directors in such major institution.

Due to the devotion of Professor Lin, Taiwan has become the new star of the international design world. Furthermore, in 2011, we successfully won the right to host the International Design Alliance Congress Taipei (IDA Congress Taipei). More than two thousand world class designers, experts and scholars from more than fifty countries came to Taiwan to take part in this huge event. This was the biggest design event not only for Taiwan but also for the whole Asian area. At the same time, this was the first congress after International Design Alliance (IDA) had intergraded three main categories, including visual design, industrial design, and interior design. This meant a great deal in the world design history. All the incidents left our teachers and students in amazement.

Professor Lin once took out a Chinese calligraphy brush that he carried with him and drew a circle on a piece of white paper, after locating the North and South Pole, he then pointed out the location of Taiwan. He said that because the uniqueness of the situation that Taiwan is in, we often were impeded when dealing with international affairs. In fact, Taiwan does not need to compete the area of our country against other international countries. Instead, we should focus on making our cultural soft power become the world magnet. Therefore, taking part in large-scale international events and competitions is a short cut to establishing our magnet field of cultural soft power.
