Connotation and innovation that makes a good design.

Over the years, Professor Apex Pan-Soong Lin has committed in researches and creating works that combines arts into design. Lin has been actively working on collaborations that integrate art into commercial designs. He is hoping that the aesthetic elements in art can be seen in market-oriented commercial designs. Lin thinks that designing is not just about utility, it’s about applying arts into the aesthetics of living. It’s like a mirror, where it reflects what the society is like. It also sends a message showing our lifestyle.

Connotation and innovation is what professor Lin thinks that makes a good design. When he starts working on a design, he starts with a concept in mind, followed by figuring on how to efficiently create and deliver the idea of the concept while adding refreshing creativities into his work at the same time. That is what makes his works unique and eye catching. While in the process of designing, Lin nourishes his works by receiving ideas from books, objects, and people. Traveling is also another way that makes him always open for new ideas and concepts. This is why Professor Lin can always deliver impressive designs that brighten people’s vision.

Professor Lin has fulfilled his sense of design into several CIS (Corporate Identity System) works. His previous clients include, Chunghwa Telecom, PTS Taiwan Public Television Service, Chunghwa Post, Ting Hsin International Group, National Palace Museum, and Vantone Real Estate Group in Beijing. He has done almost hundreds of different CIS projects in both Mainland China and Taiwan. In every project, Lin always considers what the client’s overall image is, along with their products and its general identity; all these elements helped Lin in producing strong brand identities.

Take Chunghwa Telecom’s CIS logo as an example. The two symmetrical telephone receiver icons that click together symbolize how communication should work and transmit both ways. This has clearly demonstrated their business philosophy of “Communicating feelings, and connecting the world at heart.” The blue and white striped background gives us a sense of technology while providing services at a speed. Another example of his work would be the school badge of National Taiwan Ocean University. The school centers itself as a marine oriented academic university. Its name clearly states its position as related to the deep blue ocean. This is where Lin puts the Chinese character of “water” as the basic concept of the design. The character exemplifies the wave of the ocean and gradually turns in to the shape of a seagull. The seagull represents a broader and higher vision that is always not afraid of challenges and will always be moving forward. The rounded shape of the icon symbolizes how the school cultivates their students to always outlook the world.

Last but not least, Professor Lin’s most inspiring work “My Taiwan” has cost him a year to finish a series of paintings. He has put all of his affection toward his homeland of nature- Taiwan in a series of painting. These paintings might look somewhat complicated, but it represents how this island shows its energy in different story that are felt at heart. Lin uses materials that can be simply found and used the easiest ways to draw down what happens around us every day. One of his works called “The drifting Taiwan.” Shows what Lin had thought about the drifted situation of his homeland when he saw the clouds floating in the air from the window of an airplane.
