【Starry Sky and Follow-ups】Reflections and Feedbacks

On persisting in pursuing my dream of design, I believe that
one’s "mind" and "attitude" decide his depth and vision.

According to the decision made in the meeting, after we interviewed Professor Apex, Pang-Soong Lin and visited his exhibition in Kaohsiung, each of us needed to pick one or two favorite artworks from Professor Lin’s collection. After that, we needed to write down the reasons why we liked or admired the work we had picked, and then we would meet again and share with one another about our personal opinions.

I am very impressed by Professor Lin’s artworks, experiences and philosophy. For instance, once he used a fountain pen, a calligraphy brush and a stylus to draw the image of Taiwan; when travelling around the world, he looked for stones that had shapes similar to the shape of Taiwan; and the emotions he had for the collections of the soul of homeland. These all make me admire Professor Lin so much more and want to be like him. One of the works that I particularly like is the painting he did in Lyon, France. In the painting, Professor Lin is holding a stone with the shape of Taiwan that symbolizes his longing for his homeland, while the background is a mighty and majestic statue of a knight. These two images post such a strong contrast that I cannot help but feel so deeply impressed.

Among all of Professor Lin’s artworks, I like the painting of pothos the most. The pothos that he saw was from his hometown in Pingtung which his father had planted before passing away. The emotions that arouse from missing his father made Professor Lin pick up a Chinese calligraphy brush and a random piece of A4 paper and draw out the picture that represented his father and his homeland. Though it is a drawing in black and white, the drawing technique of the painting is very delicate, lively and full of vitality.

I once tried using my own pencil to draw an image of Taiwan, the popular grassroots group called Techno Prince or temple fair. I drew for a long time but was not very satisfied with my work. At that moment, I realized that to become a great artist or a designer, one needs a great amount of patience. Every line needs to be drawn out with care. My father said that learning how to draw might help change my restless personality and make me more successful in whatever task I undertake in the future. I think I can understand the expectation my father holds for me.

When I first got to know Professor Lin’s artworks, what I saw the most frequently was the shape of Taiwan in different forms. I had never known anyone that loved to draw Taiwan this much and was able to integrate different elements in one concept. Later, when we went to Tung Fang Design University in Kaohsiung to visit the exhibition of Professor Lin, we saw more of his artworks. Among all of these, one that impressed me the most was the image of Taiwan in a skeleton form. The reason that this painting left a deep impression on me was because this reminded me of the changes the global warming has brought to us, which is like an illness that is invading Taiwan.

I love this piece of artwork because it also makes me think of the talented people in Taiwan. Just like the operation of human body, we need blood to function. With the massive loss of blood, people will die. As the same goes, with massive talents that go abroad to work, this creates a lack of talents in Taiwan. This would probably result in Taiwan becoming the skeleton in the picture.

The way that this painting is presented is very special. Using the image of a skeleton to symbolize Taiwan gives a scary and dark feeling to the viewers. It makes me feel as if it were the day of the end of the world for Taiwan. This is the first time that I have seen anyone expressing in this way, and for me it has a very powerful effect.

Among all of Professor Lin’s artworks, my favorite is the work of home letters of Taiwan. The reason is because this artwork is full of bright colors and that really attracts my attention. This work is composed of many small Taiwans to create a larger image of Taiwan. It adds a clear sense of layers to this piece of work.

I am so glad that I was born on this beautiful island and have been growing happily here. Through Professor Lin’s artworks, I realize that there are so much more beautiful sides in Taiwan, a place where we have been growing up.

Another painting of Professor Lin that I love is the image of Taiwan that was drawn by using fountain pen, calligraphy brush and stylus. The reason that I like this painting is because I like reading. This painting looks as if the flowers bloom through the book to express the lively vitality. It makes me feel that the whole room is full of aroma. Furthermore, Taiwan is not only the place that is filled with hospitality but also full of the scent from the books. Just like Professor Lin, who is not only courtly and refined but also exudes the quality of an artist.

I hope that I could grow up to be like Professor Lin and create all these artworks that are so special and original.

When visiting the design exhibition of Professor Lin, each and every piece of art amazed me. The collection that used the shape of Taiwan to create different images attracted my attention the most. Professor Lin is like an incredible magician who creates so many images of Taiwan in various forms, such as the forms of pothos, flowers, books, scenery, and even Buddha. Each painting is incredibly unique. They are all the diary of Professor Lin’s journey. Among them, my favorite is the home letters of Chiang Mai, Thailand. There is a solemn Buddha in the painting. The facial expression of the Buddha expresses a sense of dignity. The gesture of the hands carries a special meaning. In the background there are flames of burning fire. All the elements create a sense of reverence. This is why I like this painting in particular.

I think that Professor Lin’s artworks bring a great amount of inspiration to people. All his works are intriguing and you can never get tired of looking at them. They make you want to view them over and over again. When you view the work long enough, another new work would emerge from the original one. After learning about the artwork of Professor Lin, it opens my horizon of the designing world. One of my favorite artworks is G-Mark. The reason is because the moment I laid my eyes on the painting, it sparked enormous imagination inside me. This artwork depicts the style of the special collection of Loving Taiwan by Professor Lin. It also has a touch of the style of Picasso. It is created in black and white. This suggests a sense of returning back to the age of innocence.

I once used a pencil to draw an image of Taiwan. I drew the gourmet food in different parts of Taiwan, such as Xiao Long Bao, pearl bubble milk tea, watermelon, pork rib bento, Chinese cruller, sausage, Takoyaki and etc. Thinking of gourmet food reminds me of my dream to become a chef in the future. I want to try all the foods in different parts of Taiwan and taste all the delicacies in order to become a great chef. I will work hard and learn, hoping that one day I could be like Professor Lin and stand on the international stage.

I really like the artworks of Professor Lin. They make me love Taiwan even more. I also learn that painting has the power to express culture and emotions. From the paintings, I can feel the passion that Professor Lin has for Taiwan. This is my favorite painting in the exhibition because of its color arrangement. It has a sense of feeling that is soft and warm. I can see Taiwan and its outlying islands. There is also 3D effect in the painting. I think it would be really cool if we could use this painting to use as color blindness detection.

Professor Lin and I share the same interest which is travelling around the world. Professor Lin said that traveling is where the heart leads, the greater your mind is, the bigger the stage will be. I would love to have the chances to travel to different places to explore and experience the emotion of the culture and feeling of the land with heart. This helps me understand the preciousness of our own country and realize what we need to learn from other countries.

I really like the collection of Our Taiwan by Professor Lin. He used simple materials and tools to sketch out different touching moments that he felt about Taiwan. One of the paintings that I admire the most is the drawing that uses a thick rope that ties around Taiwan, and the rope keeps on extending. I feel it suggests that Taiwan is surrounded by layers of hopes. Furthermore, it also indicates the vitality of Taiwan will grow sustainably. This is very intriguing. This painting fully expresses the future hope of Taiwan. As long as we could work together as a team to combine all the hearts that love Taiwan into a thread of ribbon. I believe that would allow Taiwan to create its indelible magic power.

I have been loving drawing since I was little. When I get tired of study or have free time, I would often get a piece of random A4 paper that my parents have used and draw on the back of the paper. Recently, I have been drawing comic strip about the war against Japan. We have the broad sword team versus Japanese katana. There is also the story war hero general Chang Tzu-chung. I draw these stories after watching the TV program, and the paintings are all drawn by using Chinese calligraphy brush.

Therefore, when I found out that the Taiwan images collection by Professor Lin were also drawn by using Chinese calligraphy brush and stylus, I felt a sense of closeness and the paintings were very beautiful. There are two pieces of artworks that have left a deep impression on me. One was Colorful World, Beautiful Taiwan from Taiwan Design Expo in 2006. The painting is composed of many colorful lines. Upon seeing the painting while visiting the design work of Professor Lin in the exhibition, I did not find anything special about the painting. However, when I took a step back and realized that the brightest part of the painting is the image that is in the shape of Taiwan. I think putting beautiful Taiwan in the colorful world is a very creative idea.

Another painting that I like is the image of Taiwan as a flaming island. Though the raging fire is not in the color of red, I could still feel it burning. It is very lively but not too dazzling. I do not know how Professor Lin drew the shadow of the flame or the tiny dots. I guess he probably used a stylus. Perhaps next time I would ask Professor Lin in person. I think my father would not buy me a stylus because he does not like me to draw such a tiny drawing. He said it would hurt my eyesight. I guess I would buy the stylus and draw later when I grow older.
