Executive Yuan approved the
initial network plan of the Mass Rapid Transit System in the
Taipei Metropolitan area in 1986. Taipei Rapid Transit
Corporation was founded in 1994 and the Muzha Line, a
driverless and medium-capacity line, was operated in 1996.
Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation sparked controversies after
the opening of its first line at the beginning due to
incidents such as fires and flat tires of the train,
computer malfunction during a thunderstorm, and the French
train manufacturer dropped out in the middle of the
construction. Fortunately, difficulties had been overcome
with the assistance of domestic technology consulting team.
More metro lines are operated and expanded, including Tamsui
Line in 1997, Xindian Line in 1999, the northern part of
Zhonghe Line, and Nangang Line in 2000. The network of
Taipei Rapid Transit System has become more and more
complete and taking the MRT in Taipei is becoming easier and
easier.
