Rainbow Banner is the most commonly used homosexual symbol in the world and it’s pretty easy to be recognized.

Rainbow Banner, the cross culture sign, is not invented in recent years.  However, it appeared in the Jewish political movement and also the Greek mythology, talking about gender issues.

Homosexual people started to use the Rainbow Banner since it was first introduced in the parade in San Francisco in 1978.  An artist, Gilbert Baker from San Francisco was inspired by the movement and black affirmative in the 60'S in US and designed the Rainbow Banner for use as the symbol of homosexual movement.  The Rainbow Banner, woven by Baker and 30 volunteers, was first shown in the homosexual parade of the same year.


Pink for sex, Red for life, Orange for cure, Yellow for sun, Green for nature, Emerald for art, Indigo for harmony, Purple for spirit.


The next year, Baker cooperated with the Sun Francisco in a banner production company, beginning the mass production of Rainbow Banner and used it in the parade in 1979.  Since the color of emerald and pink aren’t easily get and cost more, they were deleted, and also indigo was replaced by dark blue.  Since then, the six-color Rainbow Banner was soon spread through the whole country and around the world from San Francisco, furthermore, Rainbow Banner became the sign of and even the international flag manufacturing organization, also took it as the symbol of homosexuality.
