Project overview

1. Description of "Our Community"- Lukang(鹿港)

Our hometown, Lukang(鹿港), is located in central Taiwan and close to the Taiwan Strait, because it is the closest port to China, so in the Qing Dynasty it was designated by the government as the official trade port between central Taiwan and Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China. Since then, it has attracted a large number of Quanzhou people to trade and settle here, and became one of the three prosperous ports in Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty. Although it once prospered because of the development of commerce in the past, the economic development of Lukang gradually stagnated due to factors such as the gradual siltation of the port and the lack of railways passing through Lukang during the Japanese rule.

However, because of its early development, Lukang has retained many monuments, historical buildings, temples and festivals, traditional pastries and handicrafts, and has now become an important tourist resource to attract tourists from all over the world. Walking into Lukang is just like walking into a living history museum.

2. Summary of Our Project

A Taiwanese singer sang about the contradictions of the Lukang people and also sang about the problem of preserving old houses. "I heard that they dug up the red bricks of their hometown and painted them with cement walls, and the people of their hometown got what they wanted, but they lost what they had..."

In the past, there were many century-old houses in Lukang that were abandoned and overgrown because the owners could not repair them, and even could not escape the fate of being demolished. But now, Lukang, with the support of the government and private forces, the old houses have begun to be restored, and many young people are slowly attracted to return to their hometowns to start new careers. At present, Lukang's new sightseeing spot " Hexing Youth Innovation Base " is the best example of the Changhua County Government's commitment to preserving Lukang's cultural heritage and reusing abandoned spaces. Here we can see diverse spaces that successfully combine youth entrepreneurship, cultural and artistic innovation, sightseeing spots, preservation of historic buildings and authentic community life.

Walking on the old street of Lukang, time seems to stand still, taking people back to the past and re-feeling the beauty of the past, but careful observation in the alleys and old houses, young people began to return to our hometown to show different creativity. Lukang is changing, and such a change is worth everyone walking into Lukang again to explore and discover.

3. CyberFair Theme

The theme of CyberFair 2022 is PROTECT & Unite!

Due to the threat of COVID-19, since 2020, people have been afraid to travel and be afraid of contacting people. As a result, Lukang, which used to rely heavily on the tourism industry, has become increasingly declining, and many young people have lost their jobs and have to return to Hometown, however, even under such a threat, through the project study, we are fortunate to find that with the support and protection of the Changhua County Government and many Lukang people, the old houses in Lukang have been restored one by one, and the government also actively supports young people to return. Lukang ,with a public rental exchange model, reduces the rent burden of young people as much as possible and allows the public to participate in art and cultural activities for free.

Even with the threat of COVID-19, with the efforts of everyone to unite and protect, the old house has a new life, and the art and culture can still be inherited and innovated.

6. Our Project Sound Bite

Lukang's new sightseeing spot " Hexing Youth Innovation Base " is the best example of a diverse spaces that successfully combine youth entrepreneurship, cultural and artistic innovation, sightseeing spots, preservation of historic buildings and real community life.

Even with the threat of COVID-19, with the efforts of everyone to unite and protect, the old house has a new life, and the art and culture can still be inherited and innovated.

7. How did our activities and research for this International Schools CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our project study mainly presents the role of Hexing Youth Innovation Base in the past history of Lukang, and further studies the development of the salt industry in Lukang and the police system during the Japanese rule. In addition, through the active intervention and assistance of the government, we have learned that the preservation of historical buildings and the restoration and activation of old houses can coexist at the same time. The restored old houses are supported by the government to encourage young people to return to their hometown to start businesses and exchange rents through providing activities, so that the public can participate in art and culture activities for free.
In the process of project research, we have learned many skills including data collection, data organization, photography, interview records, web page production, communication and cooperation, problem solving, etc. More importantly, we understand the importance of protecting historical memory and cultural heritage and innovation.
Such a learning process fit into national curriculum standards at the junior high school level :
A: Autonomous action
B: Communication and interaction
C: Social participation
