When people want to ask deities to help them make decisions, they would draw divination lots and then decipher the instructions sent out by the deity. In our Earth God Week activities, we organized a divination lots drawing game to see how’s everyone’s luck in the coming year?

Making Divination Lot Holder

Our helper Nicole to design a divination lots drawing game on Scratch. Since it is the year of pig on the lunar calendar, we added pictures and art elements of pigs in the interface. The divination lots included various auspicious lots. When the game was done, our teachers converted the file and then played it on the screen at the 1F student activity center.

Divination Lots Drawing

During the first recess, grade one students were drawn to the activity center by the adorable pictures of pigs on the screen, but no one dared to try it. Ms. Peng and our team members explained the game and encouraged them to try. The grade one students started to gather in front of the screen to try the game. They were very curious about the divination lots that they kept on coming every break time. We explained the meaning of each lot to them patiently, and every one enjoyed the divination lots drawing game tremendously, even our teachers wanted to find out what their future would be in the year of pig!

Afterthoughts

We played the divination lots drawing game on the big screen at 1F student activity center. Students who lined up were anxious to find out what they have drawn. If they could not understand the lot, we would explain it to them. The activity was a great success, and we worked like temple staff explaining divination lots to worshippers!

I rushed down the stairs to the student activity center in the morning during recess to see how everything was even though it wasn’t my shift to man the station. When I got there for my shift in the third afternoon recess, there were already students lining up for the game. I served the crowd by explaining the meaning of the lots of lower grade students, and every one of them had a great time. After this experience, I am now better at interacting with lower grade students. I still need to work on explaining the meaning of divination lots because what I did was not professional enough.

There were a lot of lower grade students coming to the 1F activity center to play the divination lots drawing game during recess. They hoped the lots would bring them good fortune in the new year. We were there to maintain order, making sure they lined up to play the game so everyone would be able to enjoy it. When I was manning the game, I saw a few lower grade students praying really seriously to the screen for a good divination lot to pop up. They were genuinely serious about the game, and it was such a precious experience.
