In-Class Presentation

Before we started the Earth God Make-A-Wish Card activity, we decided to first introduce the temple to the grade two students before handing the make-a-wish cards to them. After they have learned more about the temple and Earth God, they would then start writing their wishes on the cards.

After we decided to introduce the temple to students in class, Debbie and Amber started preparing for the presentation. Since the target audience was second grade students, we must choose words that they would be able to understand.

Presentation Highlights

  • Getting to know the temple
  • Stories about the temple
  • Protecting the environment
  • Earth God Make-A-Wish Card activity

Rehearsal

After the script was ready, the two practiced and got themselves ready in one day. The two worked well together, and they got the script down after a few practices.

In-Class Presentation

This was their first time introducing a topic to such a young audience. Amber and Debbie spent twenty minutes introducing Fude Temple on Dianzai Street, and they interacted with the audience through questions and answers. The audience enjoyed their presentation tremendously!

Make-A-Wish Card activity

After the second graders got to know the temple’s primary deity – Earth God, our teachers explained the Make-A-Wish Card activity to them. Our teachers even listed things that students could wish for and write on the card for Earth God.

Afterthoughts

In the planning stage, we wrote our script based on the topics listed on the presentation and assigned parts to cover the presentation. It was my first time giving a presentation to a group of second graders in class, and I was quite nervous before entering the classroom. After the presentation got started, it was not so bad. It felt like I was telling them a story. I was afraid that it might feel awkward during my presentation, but, luckily, students in Class Zhi were really enthusiastic, and that was a huge relief to me. After the presentation, I have learned to interact with the audience better. I thought the in-class presentation was a success, and I was able to do a more thorough job with every subsequent in-class presentation. I am glad to have the opportunity to do the in-class presentation.

Originally I thought grade twos would be tough to control in class. But after the in-class presentation, I found that they would pay attention and listen attentively as long as they are interested in the topic. After our presentation, most of them got to know about Fude Temple on Dianzai Street better, and some of them even asked their parents to take them to the temple. I think our in-class presentation was quite successful. If I ever get a chance to do another presentation in the future, I would have added more chatting to interact with the audience better. I would have also tried to maintain a smile during my delivery, and that would totally make my presentation so much better.
