On the last day of the semester, we invited second and third grade students to join the last event of Earth God Week – The Story of Earth God’s Blessing. Through storybooks, puppets, still-frame animations, plays, and hands-on activities, we hoped to bring the folk religion of Earth God at Fude Temple on Dianzai Street to our fellow schoolmates. Earth God’s Blessing was our final presentation for this year’s Cyberfair competition, and we would like to present our findings to students and teachers at Yu-Tsai.

Activity Design and Job Assignment

Within the one-hour time frame, we had to piece together the storybook, deity puppets, still-frame animation, play, and hands-on activities into one seamless show so the audience would be able to better understand our research topic. In order to ensure the activities would go smoothly, we invited event assistants from Grade Five Yellow Class to join us. As for the Cyberfair team, we were assigned to handle different jobs such as hosts, PPT control, and handing out of gifts. Everyone got different jobs in different stages of the activity.

Activity Preparation

After the activities were planned, each of us had to make sure our deity puppets were done. Each team was responsible for getting the props and costumes ready. Besides ordering mochi, our teachers also digitized the storybook, presentation, still-frame animation, and make-a-wish cards into one comprehensive presentation file.

Host/Hostess Training

Delta and Candy were the hostesses of the event. Their job was to monitor and control the flow of activities. Therefore, it was important for Delta and Candy to have a script and plenty of practices so they would be able to put together a good show.

Play Rehearsal

We have prepared our own play based on the storybook that we wrote! The three teams converted the storybook into a play script, and then we played different roles in each play. In the first rehearsal, we did not memorize the lines well. But after that, we got the lines down better, and we worked on where character positioning, movements, props, and backgrounds based on the storybook. After a few rehearsals, our performances got better as we became more familiar with our lines.

During recess, we took down the deity puppets carefully and brought them to student activity center for decoration. We also brought all the props, costumes, presentations, videos, presents, mochi, and other supplies that were needed for the activity. With the help from the team, we got the place set up pretty quickly!

Full-Rehearsal

We had a full-rehearsal during lunch break before the activity began. From the opening by the hostesses to the last activity, everyone did a great job playing their roles. With all the hard work that everyone had put in, we hoped the activity could go smoothly.
