Dream Art

Although people walk slowly along the roads of Science Park, internally, they are all pacing themselves to reach the world's rhythm, and are now filled with complicated daily tasks and irritable emotions. As they walked on, they could feel a 'unique freshness' coming from their surroundings. They'd see  high tower buildings accompanied with heavy traffic, but what attracted them would be the public art presentations and the view of the Ying-Tsi Lake. This Science Park is not only full of technology but also is penetrated with culture and art.

Jimmy Parks

In recent years, the Science Park combined itself with artists' creations and decorated itself with multiple public arts which added brightness and color to the park. Each creation was not only beautiful but displayed itself with spirit to present different characteristics. From the sunrise (Tsi) of the Ying-Tsi Lake to the 'Facing Future' of the Nanke south road to TSMC's Jimmy's Park, we ride upon science from the past to the future. The public art represents the artists' unique creation styles.. Let's go and witness the magical influence these public art brought forth to Nanke!

Public art in Nanke

There are numerous installation art works in Nanke that can be found almost everywhere, including Ying-Tsi Lake, Siraya Avenue, PARK 17, Southern Taiwan Science Park Bureau and NNKIEH. Since there are way too many creations, we are not going to introduce all of them. Rather, we will introduce those based on our own experience. A science park not only consists of the grey factories we see, but also embodies arts and culture within it. It represents this optimism and expectations towards the future. Perhaps you are like us, interested in fascinating art works. Well, let us tell you: It's not necessary for you to travel all the way to Crystal Church, Painted Village, Chimei Museum, Huashan 1914 Creative Park, Pier-2 Art Center... You don't have to crowd with the throng or buy any tickets here, in Nanke!

Take a trip to Nanke and you might make discoveries~

Settled upon Ying-Tsi Lake is this large public art built in 2008 by Taiwan's CECI Company. It measures 440 meters in length, 33 meters in height, 12 meters in width, taking up an area approximately of 10 hectares. There are lots of different interpretations upon this work of art. Some say it's like a long golden python or dragon, others deem it a roller coaster or a yellow ribbon. Actually, this ribbon-like art work is called 'Sunrise', which artistically merges with the nearby meadow and lake to present a strong visual image to the visitors. When it comes to the time the sun sets, 'Sunrise' (especially its arc form) seemed even more dazzling, becoming a resting place for all and enhanced both the science park and the community's recognition of the place.

Next time, if you have the chance to pass Nanke, no matter whether you're walking on the Nanke bridge, or passing by on the high speed rail, you won't miss this splendid view. Now, use your imagination to figure out whether this is a golden ribbon, a roller coaster, a snake, or a dragon!

I though Nanke is a science park, why are there deer?! Oh~ It's the public art, cutout silhouettes of deer freely running around on the turf, with Ying-Tsi Lake just by its side, creating this great view. It's really amazing thinking about how the natural environment and historical culture, or how ecology and technology could integrate so harmoniously, accomplishing one colorful and stereoscopic work.

Let us enjoy Nanke's 'forest' life together!

FLY NAN

FLY NAN~  Author: Chia-Ling KU, Pei-Yu LAI

“The dog is man's best friend,” this sentence always seems true regardless the nationality, color, race, gender or age. Dogs appear to have a special friendship with Nanke as well, as they can be seen in archeology, environment and public art. These dogs near the Ying-Tsi Lake are made of stainless steel which symbolizes the strength of these dogs that protect those living here and also signifies the relationship between man and dog. If we say the name in Japanese, it would be “南ちゃん”. Translated directly into Chinese, it would be 'Little Southy', but it would be interpreted as brave little warriors with wings representing their freedom to run and fly, and also cheer for Taiwan's future!

Let us, along with these Southern warriors, cheer for Taiwan~ Taiwan No. 1!

When passing the Siraya Avenue, you can see a red mark at the corner of NNKIEH. It is not only the logo of NNKIEH but it symbolizes expectations of Nanke. It looks like a human figure standing upright with arms wide open as if to sail the students off to their future and as if to welcome guests into the school. The green circle on top represents a seed growing up just like the students in the school, having aspirations for their future. What’s interesting is when the two arms creating a C shape along with the circle look like the symbol '@' . Through technology and science, students express their learning abilities, courage to pursue dreams and limitless imagination.

Next time when you are at Nanke, please stop by NNKIEH and take a look at this meaningful artwork and 'Face the Future'~

Giant's Pollen Series

Giant's Pollen Series~ Author: Ying-Tung TSENG

“Why would a school place weird-looking seats throughout the campus?” I think this is a question everyone has when they first come to Nanke. Actually, these seats are enlarged pollen particles! Minor as it seems, pollen is very important to the environment since they are life's carrier. In the school, it further symbolizes the diversity of knowledge. Like magic, “Giant's Pollens” turned into artworks full with educational purposes, disseminate themselves to different corners of the campus. Hence trying to remind students to pay attention to those easily ignored things, to train their observation skills, and to be curious about their dreams, hope, and their future.

What does a giant's pollen look like? Why didn't Jack find it? Let's take a look at mysterious pollen~

 Elephant MOMOYA~ Author:  Akibo Lee

“Dad~ Why does this elephant have wings? Is it because it is dead?” one naïve kid asked his dad who is engaged in using his cellphone. Suddenly, memories of childhood slowly appeared in the my mind. Once a kid full with aspiration and dreams, did I accomplish them? Is my life now what I had hoped for in the past? Perhaps like the dad, occupied by things, lured with technology, I slowly forgot those dreams I had. “Is this Dumbo?” I asked myself, “What does the flying elephant represent? It is called MOMOYA, who likes to socialize and make friends, who likes to spray water out of its nose to make everyone happy and lucky!

Next time when you come to PARK17, don't just stop by STARBUCKS, you might as well take a look at this cute elephant~ Maybe you too can find that lost innocence and make friends with it~

Outside the Bureau is another piece of artwork --- Blackie. You may wonder what the relationship between Blackie and Nanke. Among the many places full with archaeological relics, the most surprising relic is the discovery of a dog's fossil dating back about 4800 years. The fossil was kept intact, leading archaeologists to assume it was a pet dog. “The dog is man's best friend.” He's always there to accompany us. And this very dog, Blackie, has been acknowledged as Taiwan's first dog! Due to this, there are many vivid Blackies outside the Bureau with different postures to display each dog's personality and characteristics.

Let us go to the Bureau and meet this 'Taiwan's First Dog!”

Memories of the Sugar Factory

Memories of the Sugar Factory~ Author:Hui-Kuang FANG

“Choo ---” with the resonant steam whistle blaring, the long sugarcanes, and the cool ice all represent a sugar factory. There used to be farmers harvesting sugarcane, but now, technology has replaced everything. Since childhood, I love trains like EMU100, CT152, and DT561. Dad used to carry me on his shoulders and take me to look at trains and talk about related stories. But I, who is only passionate towards the trains, would never understand dad's childhood. However,  I would always remember that faint smell of the sugarcanes…

Would you like to get a taste of Father's sweet childhood?
