Dharma Master Cheng Yen, a Buda nun. With the tender mercy, Dharma Master Cheng Yen found the Tzu-Chi Foundation on March 24th 1996 of lunar calendar. It started with Non-Profit association in the early days, and it’s been spread out to 66 countries worldwide.
What are TSI-CHI’s FOUR MISSIONS and EIGHT FOOTPRINTS? Charities, Medicine, education, culture all together are known as TSI CHI’s four missions. This is the direction of Tzu-Chi’s mission development. The first home of Tzu-Chi’s is Tzu-Chi abode. With the spirit of “No work, no eat”, the foundation has been through the years of bamboo tube to carry out each single case with the reports of integrity and fidelity. The members of TSI-CHI foundation are now all over in Taiwan, districts and contact points are located in 45 countries out of 5 continents. Their works are spreading out. 。
1.Charity Building
【Domestic emergency rescue】
I n 1996, the master decided to organize a rescue team in community because of Typhoon Herb attack, Tzu Chi has done numerous big rescue cases in Taiwan ever since.
【International relief】
The latest international relief efforts were in Sichuan China and Burma. Tzu Chi people went to both disaster areas to rescue and help with survivors. They also built Great love shelters known as Tzu Chi houses for survivors and comforted their weary hearts. The Five principles of the international charity are Direct, Priority, Respect, instant and practicality. Tzu Chi also build many schools in many countries.
【Environmental Protection 】
3.Education Building
The mottos of Tzu Chi’ schools are KIND:Giving joy, Sorrow: Relieve suffering, Gladness:filled with joy, Giving:to give unconditionally. The features of Tsu Chi’s education focus on Ikebana, Chadou, Calligraphy and life education etc.
2.Medical Building
To be solved the backward medication condition in the East coast of Taiwan. Tzu Chi people built a hospital in Hualian city, At beginning, there were several difficulties to be overcome such as land finding, recruiting, founding and the master even promised to donate her live to make this happen. Up to now there are six Tzu Chi’s hospitals island wide. To prevent the earthquake and reduce other risks for patients, the latest earthquake technology design is also adopted in Tzu Chi hospital Taipei and Hualian to make structure as stable as ever constructed. Tzu Chi purchases the latest medical equipments to improve medication quality. Tzu Chi has been promoting body and organ donation. A teacher has once said: I can suffer for misdiagnosis but do not make an incorrect diagnosis of the illness from which patient is suffering
4.Cutural Building
Tsu Chi’s publications are Tzu Chi Monthly, Tzu Chi Companion, Tsu Chi broadcast, and Daai TV station etc. The four mission of humanity are charity, medicine, education, humanity.
