Today we came to National Taipei University of Technology to have an interview with Uncle Syg-Peg Ruei. He is a professor here, and he was the leader of school administration and the manager of the department. Uncle Ruei wore a pink shirt when we visited him. He looks young and friendly. He is kindly and friendly to host our visit. |

Uncle Ruei 's father was born in the mainland of China . During the eight-year war against Japan , he joined the youth army. (At that time, many young people gave up their education or works to join the army.) After losing the mainland of China during the civil war, he followed the government and came to Taiwan . After coming to Taiwan , the youth army was dismissed. Then, he took examines and became a teacher in the military school. After that, he taught sociology and political science in the military college. |
Uncle Ruei 's mother is from ZhangHua. She met Grandpa Ruei when he was teaching in PingDong. During that time, the chance of intermarriage between Taiwanese and Chinese is rare. Married to a Chinese needs some courage. |
¡§After they got married, did they have any difference on their life styles, foods, and communication? Did they have any difficulties to adjust?¡¨ Andy asked. |
¡§No!¡¨ Uncle Ruei answered. ¡§Probably because my mother believed that once a woman married, she should follow her husband's life style and habits so she followed.¡¨ |
This seems hard for young people who have strong ego in the new generation, so called ¡§e generation¡¨. |
¡§Don't they have any arguments on what they believe?¡¨ Jim seems this is quite unbelievable. |
¡§Of course, they have arguments, such as, on their beliefs of politic and some small details.¡¨ But Uncle Ruei confirmed ¡§but they respect each other¡¨

Uncle Ruei grew up in the dormitory for professors around National ChengChi University . The professors there shared the same background with Grandpa Ruei. They all came to Taiwan with the government. |

¡§Even though the place I lived is not the military dependents' village, but it has the same aroma with the military dependents' village. The difference is my father was a teacher not a soldier.¡¨ Uncle Ruei described. |
Since Grandpa Ruei was a teacher, he focuses on his children's education, and all the children in Ruei's family have good education, too. Two sons and a daughter went to National Taiwan University . After Uncle Ruei graduated from National Taiwan University , he went to the States for his doctor's degree. Then, he worked in the States for two years and came back Taiwan for teaching. |
¡§How the environment Uncle Ruei grew up makes difference?¡¨ Jessie asked. |
¡§All the parents in our area share the same idea, that is, they pay attention their children's education. The only way to excel others for the next generation is through study since everyone came from China and had no money, no house or land, and no money to run their own business¡¨ Uncle Ruei explained. ¡§When we grew up in that environment, the only disadvantage is we are not able to speak Taiwanese because we don't need it. My mother will handle it if we need to speak Taiwanese.¡¨ |
Uncle Ruei thinks he has no problems in Taipei , but if he travels to the middle part or the south part of Taiwan for advising jobs in factories, it is quite inconvenient if you cannot speak Taiwanese. Uncle Ruei suggests us that we should learn Taiwanese. |
¡§Did Uncle Ruei go back to China for visiting his relatives? Did he find some differences between Taiwan and China on life styles?¡¨ Angle raised her question. |
¡§No!¡¨ Uncle Ruei answered, ¡§My father lived on this land over sixty years. He believes this land, Taiwan , will be the place he rests.¡¨ |
