People in Military Dependents' Villages are from different provinces in the mainland of China . They have different ascents from the north and from the south; they also have different representative dishes and snacks from the north and from the south. People from the north brought their representative dishes, such as, ¡§Shui-Jiao¡¨ that is streamed dumplings, ¡§Bao-Zi¡¨ that is streamed buns with stuffing, friend green onion pancake, and ¡§Man-Tou¡¨ that is stream buns. After years, no matter mothers from Chinese genetic group or Taiwanese genetic group, they are good at cooking all those representative dishes. |
Grandpa Lee, we had interviews with before, told us that ¡§After came to Taiwan , the hardest time for them is the Chinese New Year. They have serious homesickness. Hence, they, some came from ¡§He-Nan¡¨ and some came from ¡§Shan-Dong¡¨, decided having streamed dumplings since streamed dumplings are the traditional dish for the Chinese New Year in their hometowns. It represents good lucks in making money. (Note: the shape of stream dumplings is just like ¡§Yuan-Bao¡¨, an odd-shape gold used as money in the old time, and it stands for wealth). Also, food was not good usually. Having streamed dumplings will dissolve their thirsts for a great meal.¡¨ Then, he said ¡§Everyone donates some money and buys some meat and leeks. People like Grandpa Lee, who is from the north of China , introduced streamed dumplings into Military Dependents' Villages . As time passes, all the mothers in the villages can cook stream dumplings. |

All of us had streamed dumplings before. However, everyone had the experience of making dumplings, except Andy. Hence, we would like to experience the fun of making streamed dumplings. After having a discussion with teachers, fathers and mothers, we decided to have streamed dumplings and egg soup with corn. Jessie 's mother took the responsibilities of purchasing ingredients and arranging the location. |

We though making streamed dumplings should be easy. Just putting some stuffing on the skin and wrapping it up. However, if we have too much stuffing, it will come out from the skin, but if we have too few, it will look skinny. The worst thing is it does not look like ¡§Yuan-Bao¡¨ and this is unbearable. |

Fortunately, Jessie'mother, Andy's mother and teachers carefully taught us each step of making streamed dumplings. Also, Jim's father encouraged us with ¡§streamed dumplings are good enough as long as it is eatable after cooking!!¡¨ All those made us having faith again. After some frustration, we finally made some ¡§products¡¨ looked almost like streamed dumplings. However, our teachers, who have lots of loves and sympathy, ignored their true voice from their hearts and gave us ninety-five points. Maybe it was because those dumplings included our efforts and this made the dumplings tasted great, even better than the ones sold in shops. |

This activity of making stream dumplings definitely killed two birds with one stroke. We could have some contents of this topic, and also, during the process of making dumplings, we learnt some skills of making living. In addition, we were able to make fun of the ugly dumplings someone made. At the same time, we created some dumplings in different shape, such as, UFO shape, submarine shape, and pillow shape. Occasionally, we fought with flour, and we could not have more fun than this. If all the research projects are as fun as this one, we would like to do this kind of projects everyday. |
