2.Interview Questions:

Q1.Why did you apply for the job as a teacher at Dong Shan Elementary School?

A1.By chance, I learned that Dong Shan Elementary School needed to promote education on Beiguan music and  camp activities. At the same time, I wanted to change my job, so I went to Dong Shan Elementary School to try it out.

Q2.How did you come to know about Beiguan music?

A2.Because of the need to assist in establishing the Beiguan music club at Dong Shan Elementary School, I came into contact with and learned about Beiguan music.

Q3.Why did the school promote the Beiguan music club?

A3.During Dongshan Elementary School's centennial celebration, senior alumni were invited back to their alma mater. At that time, the principal, Shih-Hsun Li, met with former Beiguan music club president Rong-Yuan Tsao. To ensure the sustainable development of traditional skills and cultural heritage, the principal combined this opportunity with the former club president's expertise and decided to establish a Beiguan music club for students to explore and gain an interest in Beiguan music. And that's how Dong Shan Elementary School's Beiguan music club was established in 2019.

Q4.What are some impressive things that have happened since the establishment of the school's "Beiguan" club?

A4.Since the establishment of the school's "Beiguan" club, there have been many memorable moments accompanying students in practicing and performing "Beiguan." A few that have left an impression on me are:

1.While accompanying the first group of students who joined the "Beiguan" club, I found they persevered in learning "Beiguan." Learning "Beiguan" requires patience and perseverance. I remember those students initially had no idea what "Beiguan" was, and did not know how to play the instruments. However, with continued practice and exposure to "Beiguan" courses, they gradually began to find it interesting. They even started asking if there were any more performances they could participate in. Witnessing students go from not knowing to loving "Beiguan" filled me with pride!

2.The plan for the first group of "Beiguan" students to participate in their hometown parade before graduation allowed students to apply what they learned and connect the club with real-life experiences. Watching students participate in the pilgrimage with their feet alongside their instructor at Yujing Yuan was a moving experience that I still vividly remember.

Q5.How can students continue to participate in "Beiguan" after middle school if they want to pursue diversified development?

A5.There are two ways students can participate in "Beiguan" after middle school if they want to pursue diversified development:

1.The school assists in opening a "Beiguan" community class at Dong Shan Elementary School on Friday evenings in collaboration with Dong shan Fongli Yuan (a Beguan music group) . Students who want to pursue diversified development can attend the "Beiguan" community class on Friday evenings.

2.It is recommended that students participate in the "Changhua County Youth South-North Instrumental Experiment Orchestra" established by Changhua County Cultural Affairs Bureau to continue learning "Beiguan" on weekends.

Q6.Is there anything else you would like to share?

A6.Continuing the traditional art of "Beiguan" music is a long-term and continuous effort, as well as a cultural mission. I hope that current students can understand and recognize traditional opera culture, deepen the connection between the new generation and their grandparents, and let this traditional skill and cultural heritage take root in the campus, allowing more students to appreciate the beauty of "Beiguan" music, a unique local music.
