Today, we went on a field trip to Mushroom Tribe. Upon arrival, the staff members kindly showed us around. First, we visited Shen Nong Restaurant, where its dishes’ ingredients are all organically selected to reassure customers. Then, we went to see the warehouse where mushrooms are grown. Before entering, we had to put on shoe covers, hat covers, and brushed the dust off the shirts. We were informed that to plant mushrooms, there are four criteria to be attended to: humidity, temperature, light and air. If one takes care of those needs, mushrooms with good quality can be grown. In the warehouse, I found that the light rays are blue. We were told that the blue rays are used to curb the growth rate of abalone mushrooms and to make them more nutritious. After we left the warehouse, the staff pushed out a cart of king oyster mushrooms and abalone mushrooms, telling us that king oyster mushrooms came in respectively one on its own and multiple grown together. Single mushrooms sell better than multiple ones because they are bigger, and yet, some love to eat smaller ones with thinner fibers. And then, he told us some tips to select mushrooms, one of which is to choose the white area of king oyster mushrooms that is hard. Later on, we went to the processed goods area and saw facial masks that are made from tremella, mushroom cookies, mushroom thin noodles and so on. They were a feast for the eyes.
After the visit, we began to interview Manager Fang. I asked him what prompted him to start Mushroom Tribe, and he replied, “I want children to know more about mushrooms and to show people how king oyster mushrooms are grown”. Out of curiosity, I continued to ask him if Mushroom Tribe’s oversea cooperation had been affected by COVID 19 and he said more or less, but through technology, the harm can be minimized. Take for example, instead of meeting in person, you can hold a meeting online. For those excessive mushrooms, they made pickled mushrooms, mushroom cookies and so on. He gave every of us a shiitake grow bag and a box of mushroom cookies. It was a harvest for us!

I was so nervous during the interview, but he amicably listened to my question and answered me in a fun way so as to make it easier for us to grasp the idea. It was a fun experience. I learnt a lot about mushrooms and found that Mushroom Tribe is actually an enjoyable place to visit.

At first, I thought Manager Fang was a serious person, but after the interview, I found that he is actually a gentle, elegant and generous person. He took us to visit the farm, showed us and explained in details how mushrooms grow, and offered us mushroom cookies. It was definitely a fun trip.

The teachers took us to visit Mushroom Tribe today. I learnt how king oyster mushrooms are cultivated, from little to big enough to harvest, and how much water, air, light they need. By interviewing Manager Fang, I came to aware that his ultimate goal is to develop shiitake strains, use intelligent cultivation and grow the tastiest mushrooms.
Mushroom Tribe not only sell organic mushrooms, to reach out to more people, they have been devoting themselves to developing a variety of mushroom health food supplements and mushroom processed foods. For that, Mushroom Tribe was awarded with Shen Nong Reward and became the paradigm in Taiwanese agricultural industry, hoping to lead Taiwanese agriculture to an effective and safe new era.

Today, we went off-campus visit to Mushroom Tribe. First, we visited the place where king oyster mushrooms are grown. To enter, we put on hat and shoes covers and then we brushed the dust off the shirt. The king oyster mushrooms are more nutritious exposed under blue rays. They also introduce us a special way to plant mushrooms which is to leave one mushroom in one bag, giving them all the nutrition to make them the best king oyster mushrooms.
Then, we interviewed Manager Fang – the owner of Mushroom Tribe. I asked, “In what direction is your company aiming to head toward?”He answer, “We want to foster an environment that educates through entertainment.” And then, I asked, “We’ve heard that you have business cooperation with European countries. Did COVID 19 influence it?” He replied, “ Yes, but because the major approach to sell mushrooms is through group buying and delivery, the impact is limited. The mushrooms can stay fresh.”Lastly, Manager Fang introduced us special mushroom products, including tremella facial masks, ganoderma mouthwashes and tremella ice cream. We saw a variety of mushroom products. Before leaving, we took a picture together to draw the visit to an end.
I’ve learnt a great deal from off-campus visit, the knowledge that I cannot obtain solely from books. Now I know more about mushrooms’ kinds, cultivation and growth.
