🔎Indigo Dyeing ~ Chemical Changes of Campus Plants

  The "indigo blouse" is Hakka traditional cloth which is practical, durable, plain in color, and a symbol of frugality. Bluegrass is one of the main cash crop while Hakka ancestors crossed the sea to Taiwan. In early times, indigo is the important industry in Taiwan and it was once known as " indigo-golden crop." Indigo dyeing technique is the wisdom of Hakka ancestors and is a century-old traditional craft in Taiwan. Though people in Tuku village gradually became Hoklo Hakka, it still persists in some parts of the Hakka elements that can be connected. For instance, the members of teacher learning community of Tuku aesthetic makers are indigo dyeing lovers. They involve indigo dyeing in curriculum. It can not only preserve and pass on the culture but also accomplish the spirit of “aesthetic makers.”

   We extract grasses such as Strobilanthes cusia and indigofera tintcoria. The juice was fermented and became dyes of the fiber cloth. It’s so-called indigo dyeing. We follow the principal, chiefs and teachers to obtain the relevant knowledge. Our school also invite our alumna Wen-wen Zhan to teach us how to tie, knit, soak and steady plain fabric.    Materials such as the leaves and flowers in our campus are sources of rubbing. We use stones, sticks or hammers to beat the leaves and flowers, and the colors of them stain fabric; this way is called " beat rubbing." It doesn’t require mordants and complicated boiling process. Isn’t it beautiful and interesting?
