Temple

A. Longshan Temple

Lukang Longshan Temple is known as "Taiwan's Forbidden City". The large Buddhist temple in a full scale pattern consists of four rows of houses with three courtyards. Its architectural features are as follows:

1. Gate

The Gate architecture is very unique like a pony edition of a large building in peerless sophisticated pattern.

2. The Eight Diagrams Caisson

The caisson above the stage of Longshan Temple is one of the premier works in Taiwan. The effect of resonance can be achieved in the caisson when acting. The "Eight Diagrams" also symbolizes peace and protects people from the evil spirits.

3. Ta Chi Bagua (Eight Diagrams) Window

It's a masterpiece of Longshan Temple wood carving made by the method of "openwork carving", and it can be viewed from both sides. The curves are soft but not complex and the colors are quaint but not gorgeous.

B. Tianhou Temple

Lukang Tianhou Temple, commonly known as "the Old Ancestral House", is the religious center of people in Lukang. On the shrine of the hall is the Mazu statute, which was originally pink but now black as smoked by burning incenses for a long time. Thus, it is also known as the black-faced Mazu.

C. Hsintzu Temple

Hsintzu Temple is the only Mazu temple established at the expense of the public according to the ruling of Emperor Qianglong of the Qing Dynasty. It is also known as the "Tianhou Temple Established by Edict". Therefore, there is a monument with inscriptions that "officials and officers should dismount from their horses" in front of the temple.

D. Hsing-an Temple

Hsing-an Temple, commonly known as "Xinghua Mazu Palace", is the earliest Mazu temple in Lukang with many traditional buildings and relics including the "soft-bodied Mazu" statute that can flexibly move around, the shrine table built in 1850, and the color painting of "Overview of Hsing-an Temple in Early Days".

E. Wenwu Temple

Lukang Wenwu Temple is a large building complex with Wenkai Academy on the left, Wenci in the center and Wu Temple on the right. The three buildings are lined up adjacently, and thus they are collectively referred to as "Wenwu Temple".
