I.  Introduction of all his life

Chen Xia-Yu(1915-2000), was born of a middle-class family in Long-jing village Taichung city. Being the only boy in the family, his mother treated him in a harsh way, and he was shy and quiet, enjoying staying alone in his small world and doing some handicraft. He was always hard-working in what he was interested. Take bamboo dragonfly for example. He wanted the dragonfly he made fly higher than others’. Even though he had no knife as a tool, he sharpened his keys to make a knife himself.

He was overdosed in scenery crayon painting, and fell in love with carbon painting afterwards. His grandpa, uncle and his parents were all his models. When studying in high school, he once saw a sculpture made by a famous Japanese artist Horishinji, he was inspired and magically learned how to make sculpture without any teacher.

However, he still dreamed to become the student of Horishinji. Although he could not make it, he finally became a disciple of Fujiikouyuu, whose harsh instruction made Chen Xia-Yu an excellent artist. At 22, Chen Xia-Yu’s work got into the Royal exhibition of Japan and in the following three years, he got the honor three times in a row.

In 1941 he was given the privilege getting into the exhibition without test. After going back to Taiwan, he made a statue of the whole body for a millionaire Mr. Ku, who later became the sponsor of him.

He came back to Taiwan at the age of 26, and flew to Japan after getting married. He  became one of the founders of Taiwan Fine Art and Sculpture Association. In 1946, he was hired as a judge of Taiwan Art Competition and was hired as a teacher in Taichung Education University. In 1949, he resigned all the posts and devoted all his life to art creating.

We can see delicacy and power in Chen Xia-Yu’s work, which is what Mr. Wang admired most.

II. Art Career

The works of Mr. Chen is composed of subtle stroke, which is actually what Mr. Wang admires most. Mr. Chen’s claim toward art is to express the conserved vitality in static works. His art works is well arranged in energy and space. All the muscles of the figures look 3-Dimensional and elegant. Mr. Chen also emphasized the varieties of human gestures, with which he detailed the strength and freshness of life.
