Wang is the first one in Taiwan to make sculpture with raw lacquer (raw paint). It’s a significant breakthrough of the skill is also the biggest achievement for Wang’s sculpture career.

The reason why Wang chose to create his works with raw lacquer is because once he was creating a statue of bust for Mr. Yao, a provincial councilman. With a large number of planting sumac in Yao’s home, Wang tried to create a statue with antique lacquer method. Wang said that in this method his works can be preserved for thousands of years just like lacquerware.

Generally, the method to produce lacquerware is to prepare a vessel mold and coat its surface with dozens of layers of lacquer. However, Wang reverses such technical procedures. Here’s his method of modeling. After the statue has been shaped, make a plastic outer membrane with plaster. After removing the outer membrane, there will be shape and texture that are totally the same as the original work on the inner surface. Then put the lacquer into the outer membrane. The difference between these two methods is that, if the former method is used to fix the Irregularities patterns, the more layers of lacquer the grain is filled with, the more shallow it gets. Some subtle places will even disappear in the end.

The production principle is easy to understand, but it’s technically difficult. First, the texture of the lacquer should be even, so the thickness of the works will be the same. Here is the producing process: coat several layers of lacquer, and apply one more layer of lacquer along with a layer of gauze. On average, it takes a day for each layer of lacquer to dry. After that, continuously repeat the operations until it’s done. During the process, remember to level each layer of gauze evenly; otherwise the failure rate will be very high. The seam portion part is particularly difficult. You must first set aside the gauze in two parts, just as construction technology reservation steel, tenon, and then use AB glue to bond. In this way, even the seams can be complete presentation of the beauty of lacquer!

The works finished under the dry lacquer method, with the only defect that they cannot stand high temperature, are light, impact-resistant and easy to preserve.

However, during the process of modeling with the dry lacquer method, it takes ten times or more to finish the half-body works, and thirty times or more for the full-body ones. Secondly, the general lacquer can easily lead to allergies. Some people will react to skin irritation and itching, so even though paint products have many advantages, not everyone is able to use this method.
