Mr.Fang Te-Yuan
CEO, Formosa Hayata Association
Website:www.fha.org.tw

Background

When we were looking for the information of Yongkang Business district, we by accident found this website” Formosa Hayata Association”. To our surprise, there is a wonderland in this busy city. We immediately picked up the phone to make an appointment for interviewing. Now, let E.D. Fang to tell us the history of Taiwan Cow-tail fir community.

Valuable Taiwan Cow-tail Fir

Taiwan Cow-tail Fir exists on earth since the ice age; its history has been for twenty or thirty thousand years. The seeds of Taiwan Cow-tail fir were buried in the ice age. After the ice age’s finish, to be adapted to the Taiwan weather, the Cow-tail fir becomes as a unique subspecies in Taiwan. The Cow-tail fir can grow up to 20 or 30 cm, and the average age is 300 years old. In addition, there are only 100 Taiwan Cow-tail firs in Taiwan.

Transplant the old trees

Some trees are saved; however the environment protection ideas are not comprehensive yet, and so at that time they think trees are movable. However, it’s very easy to lose the trees’ thin roots. In addition, 10% of trees can survive because of the soil and weather. Mr. Fang even said for fun that “you can call this park as tree’s grave, not tree’s park.”

Trees would not be removed if the houses would not be pull down.

Taiwan Cow-tail fir is a kind of national treasure plant. Some people said that this area is worthy to be reserved since it has its historical meaning. It presents Taiwan’s past and this history should be told to the public. Eventually, this area is reserved and listed as a historic spot in 2005.

What the city lack is the space.

Formosa Hayata Association is a place for people taking a rest and breathing slowly. This area is reserved and thus there is no high-building establishment. Then it will be a buffer zone for city people, to release the pressure.

Continue green the Formosa Hayata Association

The space for green is not much in this community. So the green area is extended, such as “St. Mary’s bakery”. This bakery in Yongkang St. has cooperated with Formosa Hayata Association and became having its culture meaning. E.D. Fang hopes that people can visit this area more often, slow the living temple.
