Interview Background

Yongkang Business district has no crowded people or noisy bawling, but only casual atmosphere. Comparing with other districts, the biggest difference is the YYeh Tang Park. In 1995, the city government would like to broad the way and thus the 59 trees in the park shall be moved away. At that time, a junior student majoring in Economics in NTU, Chen Hsin- Yi, proactively invited local residence to sign the petition to save the old trees. Teacher onigiri was responsible for contacting work in this activity. Let’s listen to his story.

I believe that the play lane is very important.

Recalling the story, Teacher onigiri told us that he is not the founder or proposer; what he did is just to get everyone together. At that time, the plane lane was blocked, from YYeh Tang Park to Xinshen S. Rd. Hundreds pieces of paper were laid to the intersection of XInshen S. Rd. Children draw their dream houses on the paper. Because of this event, many residents got together and started to know each other. There was no politician or promotion, but only loud speaker. Local residents participated in this event by themselves; they brought the painting brush and the color pen on their own. Teacher onigiri said, “as soon as the government approved our request of blocking the play lane, we already have the social responsibility. How many things can we do? It doesn’t matter that how successful this event is; the most important thing is that people understand what we are mention. I think it is just the expression of community power.”

From stranger to friend

In the progress, the most thing touched Teacher onigiri is Ms. Chen Hsin- Yi’s enthusiasm and willpower. YYeh Tang Business district is a typical metropolis area; not like the countryside, neighbors don’t know each other and there is almost no interaction. At that time, Teacher onigiri and other people contribute themselves to connect the neighbors, and thus Dongment YYeh Tang Development Association is founded. Teacher onigiri believes that it would be a big difference between having YYeh Tang park and having no park. IF the 57 trees in YYeh Tang park were moved, YYeh Tang park would have been a traffic island. The result has big impact on traffic. In addition, YYeh Tang Buseinss district wouldn’t have the beautiful park if the trees were moved.

What is enthusiasm?

Teacher onigiri said, “sometimes people needs courage to create new things. Otherwise, it would be very easy to stay at the same position. We need enthusiasm to innovate those things which other people won’t think of.” He thinks that organization is very important in the development process of this business district. Can the organization work? Does everyone play his/ her role well? Is there any common consensus? All of these things should be coordinated. Thus, the leader will be very important. He continued saying, “Basically, the development in YYeh Tang Business district is the same as it in other districts. There is a life cycle. I think I like both, pre-developing and post-developing. We can’t control its changes. Environment itself is a kind of life; something which will disappear will do eventually. We can’t expect it change in our way. As long as the starting point is good, the community development would be good as well.”

It will become beautiful if you care about it.

At that time, Teacher onigiri was responsible for illustrating guide map. So he starts to understand the history of Yongkanb Business district, and thus appreciates its beauties. As long as the community is concerned, it will become beautiful. At the end, Teacher onigiri said, “Live at real moments. Consider our environment. Do we need a swimming pool truly? Do we need a library? As long as you start to “think”, you will find different beauty at different stage, although those ideas may not be mature.
