Introduction to team members Introduction to team members
My name is Lu, Yen-Shu; my interests are playing piano, singing and writing articles. I have enjoyed music since I was young, and I used to listen to radio before going to bed or after school. I joined girl scouts in Ren Ai Elementary school in year 3, and was once the co-leader of girl scouts. After entering junior high school, I found myself still very interested in scouts; therefore I participated in this scouts group till now. I heard that there was a scheme for project-based webpages, and I grabbed the opportunity quickly based on the fact that I am very good at informative technology. During summer holiday, my teacher took me and other scouts teammates to Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall for the seminar. After that, we then went back to school for further discussion. We talked about work distribution and the method to make webpages. While in the memorial hall, we also collected some useful materials. I hope we can present everyone a satisfactory work.

My name is Yang, Zu-In. My hobby is watching videos and comic books on computer. I participate in this project-based web page because, if we win, there will be award, and, if we lose, I will have the experience and be able to move on. For this web page, we will go visit National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall before working together with jobs divided. Making the web page together, it would be easier for everyone with a lesser part to do. While the teachers would teach us how to make the web page, we have also learned about web page making, so, it would be easier for us to do and also easier for them to teach.

I am Chen, Wen-Ning. My hobby is reading extracurricular books and I like static activities. This is an opportunity from the teachers for me to participate in the making of the project-based web page. To me, the process of making is new, my first time to do the study, visit the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall or produce on computer as a girl scout at Ren Ai Junior High. These are all very new, like a mission, so, getting engaged in the activity becomes my motive.
The making of project-based web page is by gathering full data before doing with the PC. Though I am not so good at using PC, I say to myself to do my best where capable, while hoping to improve my ability of computer using through cooperating with some classmates who have good computer skills. I will cooperate with the advising teachers and other students and hope to learn to embrace and respect others’ opinions through this activity of project-based web page making, as, though personally I have many ideas, I like to present the appropriate opinions under the advice of the teachers and to respect the thought of the other students.

My name is Chang, Kai-Chuin. I have a wide range of interests, such as reading novels, playing music and computer games. Sometimes, I also spend time with my brother reading comic books or listening to music. The motivation for me to take part in this meeting for project-based webpages is because I want to believe in my ability. I’m certain that everyone can achieve something from the project in the end. This scheme of project-based webpages will certainly be a real success with every participant’s dedication and cooperation. Of course, following my teacher’s instructions and researching for the project is a very unique experience to me as well. Though this summer is uncomfortably hot, I know we can achieve something together with hard work and patience. All we have to do is following teacher’s orders and never give up.

My name is Tasi, Chang-Heng, my interests include all kinds of sports. I’m also excellent at calligraphy. I enjoy mountain climbing and challenging activities. When entering year 7, I joined girl scouts. Since then, I’ve loved this activity and that is the reason why I know about scouts very well. My teacher told my teammates and I about the project-based webpage, giving us the opportunity to be part of it. I was very excited to hear about the research activity. In our team, every member cooperated with each other and managed to finish work as soon as possible. Besides, we put in more of our thoughts to make the webpage more interesting and informative. We all followed the advice of our professional teacher and trusted him. I’m certain that his lead will guarantee us progress for the project.

I am Yu, Yen-Ling. My motive of participating in this project-based web page research is because of fun. I am fond of monographic research and I sense from the participation in this monographic research the growth of learning much different from the past, a different experience. I would like to thank my parents and my teachers for this opportunity of different experience because they allow me to join the girl scout corps. I will work hard to accomplish this monographic research and I will listen to my teachers. I will definitely tell them before doing anything.

I am Wang, Hao. my interest is in history because in it many people left with experiences, good or bad, that can be examples for others; furthermore, a lot of wisdom is in history, well developed of medicine, religion, food, architecture, interior administration and astronomy. Not to mention the many well known stories in history, which are liked by the grownup and children alike. Those stories in history are real, hence, they are more practical than just any story.

I am Wang, Hsiang. My hobby is playing piano and violin; I am specialized in music and integrated activities. By participating in this project-based web page, I realized what empathy is, as we realize how hard it is to accomplish something when we are making the web page. Now we will think for others and put ourselves in other’s place. That is the core value of the project-based web page research, which offers one the knowledge, attitude forming and action that cannot be learned from textbooks and writing answer sheets.

Reflection
When I read about Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s history, I found his perseverance and spirit worth very much our following. In spite of repeated failures, he never quit and he grew in courage. With his perseverance, finally, after ten unsuccessful uprisings, the Wuchang Uprising on October 10, 1911 opened up the gate to the founding of Asia’s first democratic republic, Republic of China. I feel Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s perseverance and spirit is something we can use in the Basic competence test; we should replicate it to achieve our initial dream and, through stumbles without discouraged, to succeed at last.
Born the son of a poor farmer
In his childhood of hardship, Dr. Sun Yat-sen experienced the greed and cruelty of land owners and poverty and agony of farmers, which make him develop the thought of liberty, equality and philanthropy. Dr. Sun Yat-sen emphasized that knowing is more difficult than action, hoping that everyone could do best to try everything and to practice without giving up just because of difficulty. If you always give up facing the problems, there will be only more problems for you to run away from; eventually you choose what you are sure of and learn nothing. In human kind, the advance in knowledge is by constantly learning of what others know, in order to seek survival, which illustrates why knowing is more difficult than action. Sun Wen Theory concludes that where there is will, there is a way. Dr. Sun Yat-sen was dedicated to the revolution, which had undergone ten unsuccessful attempts till the eleventh made it. That also proves where there is will, there is a way.

Education taken importantly
I became to know that at the beginning of the republic, all educations should be promoted to an extent enough to give rise to civilization and expedite the progress. I think education is important, in which education endows man with higher wisdom; “no talent wasted” lies in proper education, appropriate encouragements and suitable control. So, we must take education seriously and study hard, as education is important. We start receiving national education at seven; attending the school increases our knowledge and wisdom for ourselves and we also learn of various things and matters. I think with education we become improved and because we have better brains, we can invent more articles, machines and high technology.
If you want to learn, you must ask
Learning is not just by head. More importantly, it is asking. No matter how embarrassing, any question one does not understand he can ask. During learning, when there is a question beyond oneself, it is not enough just to contemplate; one must learn to ask. Many inventors achieve what they have today because they dared to ask when they were small. So, how can one obtain knowledge if he learns without asking?

Names and honorific
I came to understand that each name has a different meaning. Dr. Sun Yat-sen has used a good number of names, and had some honorifics too. Those names and honorifics were given for reasons. I feel names are a special thing. Some people who are getting away from troubles change their names so that they might get away; some others change their names to change destiny hopefully because their names sound awkward or look not nice. But I think many names and honorifics as Dr. Sun Yat-sen had, every one of them represents a different meaning.
After the kidnapping in London
Dr. Sun Yat-sen had felt his wit and learning not meeting the need of a real revolution; so, after restoring his freedom from the kidnapping in London, he decided to stay there for a while to be absorbed in the study at the British Museum. But, the Ching Regime continued its surveillance over him through Slater, a detective, which had reported his every move to China’s embassy at times. These reports became a detailed record of how Dr. Sun Yat-sen had studied hard during his stay in London. Dr. Sun Yat-sen had an extensive reading from politics, foreign affairs, laws, mineral, agriculture to dairy industry and machinery. He is a well learned intellectual.

A challenging question
Dr. Sun Yat-sen had majored in medicine. In his five years of study, he had ten out of twelve subjects graded with honorary score, which was a feat unmatched in the history of the College of Medicine for Chinese, Hong Kong. His spirit of persistence and attitude towardlearning, with which he finished his study excellently, is worth an example for us.
Perseverance
Perseverance is what many people lack, because their enthusiasm lasts only for a very short time; they tend to quit half way done. As a result of vicious cycle, many people end up with nothing significant and, instead, being a man of decadence. Says the chapter of Perseverance of the collection of his quotes, “nothing in the world is not accomplished after difficulties and impedance; as long as the obstacles are cleared, the road ahead must be smooth.”Therefore, not only perseverance helps work and doing things, but also it furthers the efficacy of virtue.

I think endurance and perseverance are an important tool in the course of learning. If one does not repeat an experiment because it was failed, or refrains from going into the water by faking an illness or using the excuse of lack of swimsuit just because he does not know how to swim, such behavior without perseverance is nothing but coward and he will never learn how to swim, or how the experiment works. So, I think endurance and perseverance are important, which I wish everyone use to accomplish everything.

The unsuccessful first revolutionary uprising
After the First Sino-Japanese War, Ching Dynasty was in a series of loss of warfare, resulting in the compromise of the nation’s dignity and much bullying from foreign countries, which was also felt among overseas Chinese. In order to save China from such situation, Dr. Sun Yat-sen founded the Xing Zhong Society (Revive China Society) in Honolulu with a plan of initiating an uprising on the ninth day of the ninth month (Chung-Yang Day), 1895 on lunar calendar. But, before long, his men began to elbow one another to fame and interest, followed by squabble within. On top of that, the weapons and ammunition arrived in China two days later and were exposed as soon as they made Guangzhou, in which Chiu Si and Chu Guei-Chuan among others were arrested immediately, with further others getting away with. The Guangzhou Uprising on Chung-Yang Day) Dr. Sun Yat-sen had elaborated failed at a great loss.

However, the necessary failure, as we think, of this revolutionary uprising, among others, was not a complete failure. It gave Dr. Sun Yat-sen a chance of reflection so that the problems would not happen again in a next uprising. The meaning is significant in consideration of the eleventh, and successful, revolutionary uprising.

Being merry
Always wear smile when engaging in girl scout activities. They are very interesting activities. In the course of visiting, I learned a log from the girl scout activity. The National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is a strange place for me, as I do not go there often. On the other day, I pleasantly walked in the Memorial Hall in the morning.

My smile never faded away throughout the course of visiting on those days. I thought if one was not in merry mood for a thing, it made a dull thing to do. That was a bright sunny day and there were little shade outside the Memorial Hall, in which all of us made the visit becoming tired. Though physically tired, everyone enjoyed a joke at times. So, the atmosphere was merry throughout the activity. Being merry is all the momentum for doing things!

When making survey by questionnaires, we shared our joy among the girl scouts with the people in the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. We talked to the interviewees, passing our enthusiasm and joy being a girl scout on to others.

At lunch time, the teachers took us to a lunch, which made the mood of the whole group even happier. We did not make any complaints about paying visits to the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in the summer vacation; instead, we thought it as a meaningful vacation with enjoyable activities.

Ideal and practice of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s revolution Having understood the meaning of the “theory of knowing is more difficult than action”, Dr. Sun Yat-sen took ten instances to exemplify the theory. His purpose was to encourage Chinese people to practice with efforts by propagating this ideology and re-excite their heart and correct the traditional incorrect mindset of knowing is easier than action. When I read the ten instances Dr. Sun Yat-sen gave about the theory of knowing is more difficult than action, I realized that some things may seem difficult to do, but they are actually pretty easy than we imagine; it is only we do not put them to reality. Thus, we know that anything needs trying. Do not fear of trying because it seems difficult. In this sense, we can try a little in and learn some from every single thing.

Civism
The National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is where we can use our civism, because there are so many public properties which we should cherish (otherwise, we get fined). We like to study the Zhongshan Park by the Museum, where we made on-site survey of the Cui Lake, Xiangshan Bridge, Cuiheng Pavilion, American Ice Cream cultural hall and Array of Zhongshan monuments.

We saw someone eating or drinking every now and then during our investigation, and a few (only a few) littering, which was civism-less. But, as there are a good number of trash cans in the Park (36 in its peripheral alone), many people did well throw their trash in, or, a few took it away with them. These are people with civism.

While we are preparing the questionnaire, we saw many high school students practicing dance at a corner. They were working hard; they drank water and had something while taking a break, and threw their trash properly after the break, which qualified them people with civism.

Diligence
Diligence is to learn hard and act, endure and waste no time or money. I knew they worked hard as I saw it all. It was a shame I was unable to be with them to work with the questionnaires due to the lessons I had to give all that day. But, it did not matter after all as I was helpful in other ways. It seemed that the heaven knew how hard they learned and worked, because it was a sunny day under which they had no trouble giving out the questionnaires. Some boy was too shy to give out as many questionnaires; he did five only, and one of which was filled out by himself. Other than those, the other students gave out all, especially the girls, doing so well. As a result of the hard work, a total of seventy plus questionnaires were given out. That was incredible! I should have been there.

They wasted no time. They were giving out the questionnaire at any time. And they wasted no money; they had the sheets printed at the school. The questionnaire was the result of our efforts put together. I was so-o touched by their hard work. Go, boys and girls! Let’s march for the future!

At the age of seven, Dr. Sun Yat-senalready had the thought of revolution, and there were his comrades too.At twenty-one, when studying at the medical school of the Canton Hospital, PokTsai, he was also making effort in promoting revolution and was sustained by some though his contention was thought as eccentric. in the few years shortly after the founding of Tung MengHui (United League) in 1905, a multiple uprisings were delivered. These failed to overthrow the Ching Dynasty, but were able to make more people support this holy war. In the nine attempts, some of which failed due to insufficient supply of ammunition, may martyrs gave their lives for a new nation to come. However, ten unsuccessful uprisings did not discourage the perseverant Dr. Sun Yat-sen and, finally, on 10 of October, 1911, the Wuchang Uprising opened up the gate to Republic of China, Asia’s first democratic republic.

Learning is the foundation for nation
In early days, the under-privileged groups were shut off orthodox education, which was exclusive to those with powers or much money. But, a nation cannot continue to advance without people receiving education. In any nation, the civilization is acquired with education. A nation can exchange with another only it has learning and it takes learned and able people to seek happiness for the nation’s people. A national leader should have sufficient learning and ability in order to make the nation good.
Knowing is more difficult than action
Knowing is more difficult than action was taken by Dr. Sun Yat-sen as a psychological construction in his “Plans for National Reconstruction” as a centerpiece of his thought, for the purpose of encouraging Chinese to do best to practice instead of just talk or think. This plan was also hoped to be a means for reforming Chinese from the traditional and incorrect mentality of knowing is easier than action. In the Sun Wen Theory, ten examples in living are given to explain why knowing is more difficult than action; they are diet, money, writing, house building, ship building, wall building, river construction, electricity, chemistry and evolution. Dr. Sun Yat-sen presented his analysis in the relationship between “knowing” and “action” from the historical angle. For instance, what is known can necessarily be done, as he thought knowing should be before action in order to avoid errors and waste of time in the era of science to multiply the benefit. Therefore, we should act to know and then know before acting, in such way to achieve in everything.

Helping others
Helping others: doing one’s best to help others, at least one good deed a day, without receiving rewards or taking the credit. There are many good things we can do every day, like helping with the chores at home, helping your classmates, helping the elderly cross the road, yielding seat to the old, pregnant woman, one with children and the handicapped on MRT or buses, which make us very happy and the persons we help feel warm. One more thing good you do each day, and more people appreciate for your help, which makes you feel warm. Suppose you help an elderly by finding his wallet and he wants to reward you, you should decline it and tell him that is a boy scout or girl scout should do as a good deed a day. That demonstrates the “without receiving rewards” part of doing one’s best to help others, at least one good deed a day, without receiving rewards or taking the credit. If you win in a contest, you should not be proud or take the credit; instead, you should comfort the losers telling them they can keep up with you by incessant efforts and to compete again. That again are words demonstrating the part “without taking the credit” of doing one’s best to help others, at least one good deed a day, without receiving rewards or taking the credit. Helping others is good habit, and,not just a thing of a couple of days, it should go on.
Manners
We need to be very aware of our manners when visiting the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. As we wear boy scout or junior high school uniform, what we do and behave affect how people think of us. When visiting, remember to ask a question by beginning with addressing “Sir” or “Ma’am” if you have questions for the workers and to thank after they reply. That is the way to impress others nicely. The impression one has of you is important, of which the manners is a key factor. If you act like taking everything for granted and show fierce eye, you would make bad impression to others despite you actually are kind.

What will you lose to smile to others since nobody owes you any money? And people feel about you differently between your poker face and a smile. Always use the basic manners like saying “please”, “thank you” and “sorry” and a smile, which not only makes others comfortable but helps you remain welcome.

Sun Wen Theory—Knowing is more difficult than action
We tend to think it difficult, but, in fact, it is easy to make Tofu, for example, using chemical principles.Despite chemistry is complex, it proves that a difficult thing can be done easily. In the age without complete engineering principles, Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty built a great canal, over three thousand miles long, by labor; similarly, the Great Wall and, in Egypt, the pyramids were constructed in times when there were no machines. Hence, nothing is impossible, unless you don’t do it. The textbook says, “Are there really easy things and difficult things? If you do, those difficult are easy. If you do not, those easy are difficult”. Dr. Sun Yat-sen published an article in Shanghai giving ten examples to dissert that knowing is more difficult than action to call for practice among Chinese and correct them in the wrong concept about this. Whether it is acting without knowing it, or acting before knowing it, or knowing it before acting, the point all is “action”. What is most important is to really act. Therefore, every of the sayings “what is known can be done”, “what is not known can be done as well” and “where there is will, there is a way” make sense. Have faith in efforts, and nothing is difficult!

My Computer Skills, by Lu, Yen-Shu
I know how to use Word, PPT, EXCEL, Audacity, Photoimpact, computer graphic and many other computer skills. Basically I can explore to understand simple software if it is not too difficult. I’m a lucky child, as since I turned three my father let me play with his old computer. He also bought me many educational computer games for children. So, I have been familiar with the computer since I was little. Atthe elementary school, we were taught the basic use of Word and PowerPoint, and made our personal homepage. Since I was doing nothing for weekends, I started to make my own blog online. Before I knew it, exploring CCS became a hobby of mine. After junior high school, we were taught more about computer, for example, writing simple programs by using macrosin Word, recording my voice into a song by removing BGM, and make simple animation in Flash. They were fun! Ishould be able to help in every aspect for the project, because of my varieties of computer skills. For example, I type fast, so, I’m always there to help others after I finish my part of the work.I am happy about that.
The computer, by Yang, Zu-In
The computer skills I know how to use are WordPad, Microsoft Office, a kind of software by www.newsoft.com.tw and PhotoImpact. What is useful in this report seems only Microsoft Office, because it is less easy to type in WordPad, the software by www.newsoft.com.tw is for making small cards and posters and PhotoImpact is an application for modifying photos. So, every article is typed using Word in Microsoft Office. I wish I can learn more computer skills so as to be more helpful; otherwise, I have to rely on other’s help. And in such case, I will never grow. Now I learned not to rely too much on others, because they would be bore of your constant reliance and become reluctant to help you. Everyone should understand the importance of being independent and really become independent.
Skills, by Chen, Wen-Ning
I know how to use some computer skills, mostly those programs others know how to use, like Word, Powerpoint and Excel. At elementary school, I learned how to create a blog, which was not much difficult and it is a personalized program. PhotoImpact should be hard to learn. After all, I am seldom exposed to the treatment of photos in everyday life and it is hard to learn despite its diverse functions are pretty interesting. Now I am learning Flash, which is difficult for me, making me the more unfamiliar with the production of animation; sometimes I can barely keep up with the computer teacher in his teaching. However, the learning of Flash should be useful. Some utilities have slipped out my mind, not to mention so few programs I can write. What helps me most in the making of web page about boy scouts should be the application of computer skills. To use all the skills that I use or do not use often is a challenge. But I trust in the end I would be able to use and even use them to the full. I also hope to learn new programs during the production; thus, learning new programs by researching with my classmates is another major outcome of mine.
My super skills, by Chang, Kai-Chuin
I have many computer skills, including Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Word, Photoshop, PhotoImpact and Flash. Dreamweaver, for example, is a kind of software, with which I can edit the styles or patterns of a webpage for visitors to see colorful and clear homepage. Both Illustrator and Photoshop are drawing tools that I can use to draw cute pictures with for our webpage. I started to learn about software only since the seventh grade, but they help me a lot. I am very grateful to my parents for sending me to the computer class. Once I’m familiar with these skills, I wouldn’t have to worry about unemployment in the future! Let’s come back to our topic now. The software above isjust rightfor creating website, along with fascinating pictures as advertisements. Anyway, it is so handy and with more skills than others, I will be working with less toil. Most people use Flash in animation, but, actually it can also be used todo artwork. Do not take Flashlightly; actually, it is a versatile utility!
Doing my part with my computer skills, by Tasi, Chang-Heng
I can type on Window 7 and use Photoshop, PhotoImpact and Flash. I can use Flash, for example, to make interesting, beautiful and lovely animations. The pictures I post should be impressive to viewers and receive special feedbacks. I started to use these applications on homework and exams, and improved my skills quickly. This time, I hope to be able to finish it in seconds in this national competition. However, most people know how to use the software I motioned, so, I should be cautious as well. I personally think that making project-based webpage in a team helps me learn about teamwork. I know our team will get things done faster if we cooperate well.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen had lived in a small fishing village, Cuiheng Village, in Guangdong Province, China, where most people made a living by fishing and other laboring works. Like the rural areas in central and southern Taiwan, a small village could not help but develop by going out, so, many people were finding ways to go abroad.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen had an elderly brother who worked well overseas. At fourteen, he went to the U.S. to study, dependent on his elderly brother; and he learned to speak English for survival. He studied at a high school in Honolulu, Hawaii, which is exactly the one President Obama had joined. Hoping to save people by being a doctor, he went on to study medicine in Hong Kong after high school.

Back in China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen treated people for free. However, he could not save all of them, as there were so many people falling ill or injured every day of so many poor Chinese people. He thus managed to write to Li, Hung-Chang, of the position equivalent to today’s premier. But, China was then at war with Japan. In a hectic time, Li had no time for Dr. Sun’s letter. Dr. Sun Yat-sen had a wife, Ching-Ling Sung, who was special. She was the second daughter to the Sung family, having an older sister, Ai-Ling, and a younger sister, Mei-Ling. They all had studied abroad, which required a handsome fund at that time; but Sung was a very financially powerful family. Since they all had studied overseas, they not only had better understanding of what was like in foreign countries, but also acted like westerners when getting along with other people. Their father, a friend of Dr. Sun’s, was running printing factory then; so, they would print posters in secret for him, as an adequate amount of propaganda was necessary for revolution.

Scripts of narration in the visiting

It was mentioned in that letter that merchandise flow should be made smooth, which means free trade, a thought novel at that age. However, what Li wanted was only to wind the war.

Failure is the mother of success, by Lu, Yen-Shu
Failure is the mother of success, by Lu, Yen-Shu Like fortune, hard work is also crucial to success in life. Success is all about 1% talents and 99% hard work. Our national Founding Father was promoting the idea of democracy and faced many times of failure before he overthrew the Ching Dynasty. There were many factors to it. During the period, he studied intensively the methods of doing successful revolutions. His success finally came after 10 times of unsuccessful attempts. Many people choose to give up after the failure, but our national Founding Father did not. His moved on in the spirit of continued efforts. President Lincoln once said, “Failure is like falling on the ground. Your clothes might get dirty but you can always stand up again.” It is the spirit we should learn: No need to be frustrated when we fall, get up and move on! Never give up: One generation plants the trees, another gets the shade, by
Chang, Kai-Chuin
Our National Father had made 10 attempts before finally succeeded in the revolution. That was achieved with efforts and persistence. Thus, I believe that everyone should have the same spirit and never give up. To overthrow the dictatorship depends anything but luck. It was the effort of all people, who then tried everything to send Dr. Sun Yat-Sen to negotiate at the cost of many people, because some died instead of him. It was a very chaotic time. However, everyone had the same belief, which was a successful revolution, to overturn Ching Dynasty and bring democracy to the nation. Thus, when people unite as one and cooperate, the power can be great. All should converge their spirit as well as work hard constantly as individual, as teamwork works wonderfully! We are now a democratic country; but, we still have to remember their credit. We should be grateful to Sun Yat-Sen for his efforts and persistence. As the saying goes: “one generation plants the trees, another gets the shade.” We should all work hard together!
Continued endeavor, by Chen, Wen-Ning
Actually I am not perseverant. I think the momentum of my efforts is nothing but to obtain something I want. During the visits in the summer vacation, I was deeply impressed by Dr. Sun’s persistence in his ideal. I thought if I had had such spirit, my grades would improve. However, each one persists and endeavors in different things. So, when I read about Dr. Sun’s history, I began to think about learning his spirit of perseverance, which should help much if used in studying. Besides academic efforts, Dr. Sun’s revolutionary spirit can also be used in making one’s dream come true. I often get sarcasm from my mother when I talk about my big dreams to them, but my father always tells me to have the same spirit as Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. No dreams are easy to make come true. They should be realized by never giving up, persistent pursue with efforts. Although my dream is still a variable, doing everything right and persisting would be my momentum. I wish to be able to stick to my principles, as Dr. Sun did, in the things to come. Quitting in the middle due to setback will result in nothing. There should not be today’s peace and democratic nation if Dr. Sun had not persisted in his revolutionary ideal.
About the revolution, by Yang, Zu-In
Dr. Sun Yat-Sen succeeded in his revolution at the 11th attempt. I think he worked very hard and persisted. He is very impressive with never quitting, despite ten times of failure.

We need to take in Dr. Sun Yat-Sen’s spirit of effort, persistence and never quitting up. If he had had given up, we should be ruled by Ching Government today and girls should keep shrunk feet and men should shave off their hair halfway from the forehead leaving their hair in queue at the back, which would be disgusting. We thus should be grateful to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen for his spirit of never quitting up, effort and persistence.

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen was very impressive. It was very hard for him, but he was wise enough to know the revolution was to happen at some other place to be successful at the eleventh attempt. I think Dr. Sun Yat-Sen was super impressive, for without his efforts we would not have the good life today.

The basic attitude for doing things, by Lu, Yen-Sh
Our National Father once said, “Make your will to do something important”. I think the differences between “doing things” and “being an official” are in that “being an official”, as he referred to, means with a purpose of fame or money, while, doing things means to serve the people, with the spirit of public service. If a person working in the government is thinking only of a secure job and stable salary, he would simply have no spirit of serving people. I think our Dr. Sun was meaning “to do things” instead of only “being an official.”

I might not have fought for revolution or done something important with as Dr. Sun Yet-Sen did, but I can start with doing what I can. For example, I do my part to keep my parents or teachers from worrying. I would yield my seat to elderly people on the bus; I lend my hand without hesitation to my classmates and do my best. These may seem easy and daily, but with just a small action, you can be helping.

When I was in the 7the grade, I was chosen by my teacher to be a little assistant in the Student Affair Department, where I had to give up my break time and help the teachers to keep order of the school during the lunch break every day. Though my teacher said I was doing a good deed, I did not feel it. I think doing good deed is like a habit; you do not feel you are doing a good thing. Then, such is the best spirit of performing good deed. We should always do something good every day and try our best to be an excellent girl scout.
One good deed a day, by Yang, Zu-In
I have shared umbrella with someone without one in rainy days, lent my notebooks to someone who had on leave, walked someone under the weather to the medical room, helped handing out homework and correcting question sheets, lending pens to classmates and other things like those. I am happy to be able to help others. I even made a new friend from sharing my umbrella.

Once, I barely fell from a staircase because I forgot I was walking down a stair while helping someone with carrying his things. That was a close thing. Mother often says, “Help others if you have strength to spare”. So, I have often volunteered to help carrying things, be a student guard, a loving service team member, etc. since in the elementary school; finally, I had to stay in school after hour, helping broadcasting, voice hosting at morning assembly. And such over-endeavoring led to me passing out in front of nearly 1,000 schoolmates, boy and girl, in the middle of my service as the voice host. But, that made me realize that do what you can and no more, otherwise, you will add troubles and complicate things. And I also think that I do my best whatever I do within my power; and I should assess my strength; otherwise, I will surely do in vain to help.
One good deed a day, by Chen, Wen-Ning
Even if we are not so great to do such feat as Dr. Sun Yat-Sen did of revolution, we can do something meaningful. Put in simply way, to have good deeds. I often hear that junior high school students, like us, know least of doing good deeds. But, in fact, it is easy to do good deeds. Not we “cannot”, but we “do not want to”. There are actually many occasions in life we can do good deeds, for example, on way to clam school I once yielded my seat to an old man. Doing good deeds is actually easy; it takes just a motion to make the other person feel warm. Though I have done less good deeds than charity organizations or certain celebrities, I have once found a cell phone and handed it to the information desk for its owner to collect because I thought he/she must be nervous. I do not know whether anyone has claimed it, but, every time I think of a good deed I have done, I am happy; it do hope that person found it as soon as possible. There is no boundary to doing good deeds, such as in the preparation of boy scout research report, where helping my classmates solving problems is part of my good deeds. Some said that good deeds were minding others’ business, which I do not completely agree on. But, it is advisable to consider if one should do a good thing in the other person’s shoe before doing it. Therefore, not everything that is good is easy, though there seem many things in life to be done good.
Making deliveries, by Chang, Kai-Chuin
There are people who, when governed, understand the agony of civilians; but once they become government officials themselves, they immediately forgot about their previous ideas of reform and expectations. They exploit people like other corrupted officials and make people’s life miserable. Thus, I believe that doing the right thing is better than being an official, because one can help others after having done his jobs. It is often said that great achievements start from doing the small things. Nobody should have dreams that are too remote to come true because he thinks himself good. Somebody once said, “When I was little, I wanted to change the world. When I grew up a little, I realized that that dream was too difficult to achieve. I then decided that I would change my country. Later in the years, I thought I would change my hometown. When at middle age, I made up my mind to change my family. Now I’m an old man, I suddenly understood that I should change myself first. If I had changed myself at the very beginning, now I might have an opportunity to change my family, my hometown, my country or even the world.” We really should start with changing ourselves. We may not end up changing the world, but at least our family will change too because of us. We just do our best. Since I was young, I have often helped with the chore and other people. So, I keep doing it and extend my help to everyone!
The Importance of being helping and one good deed a day, by Tasi, Chang-Heng
There are 24 hours a day, and at any moment we can help others. On the way to school in the morning, we can help the elderly cross the road or carry their stuff for them. In school, we can help the teachers with heavy things or help our classmates with any difficulty they have. There can be anything, of any nature, in school, e.g., curricular problems and psychological troubles, in which we can do best to help others. Back at home, we can help cleaning the house, drying the clothes or doing the dishes. By doing the chore, we must be able to help reduce more or less burdens of the family and make it easier for our parents. On campus, we can help by picking up a piece of litter we see and throwing it in the bin. With a very small thing we do, we may help a person and make one good deed a day. Therefore, help others as much as we can.

Good manners to treat people in, by Chang, Kai-Chuin
Visiting the Office of Hall history, I realized that Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall has such a long history! I learned from the Office how the Memorial Hall came into being, including why they laid the statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen in the building in advance so as to avoid the door being too small for it. I also saw the architectural model of the Memorial Hall, which is the original design, with modification later of course; otherwise, we might be looking at a “moat” around the Hall now. I feel that we all benefit from what previous people have done. For example, light bulb, which Edison invented, lets us see clearly of each other in the dark now, and aircraft, which the Wright Brothers invented, enables us to fly like birds. But, people! Always remember the manners, if you are really a human being!
The World of Painters, by Chang, Kai-Chuin
They use different materials and have different styles. They have only two things in common. First, their works are mainly abstract paintings; second, their works are all displayed in the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. Among the three painters, I prefer the works of Li, Shi-Chi because his paintings have some styles that appeal to me most. Of course, this is only my personal opinions, and everyone has different ideas about arts and paintings. In any way, I think I understand the style of Li, because, like me, there seems a kind of order in the randomness in his works. In addition, the different shades of colors he used are also very interesting. He only used certain colors in his paintings, so his works may seem similar to each other at the first sight, but, they really look different. They are unique!
New Experiences, by Chang, Kai-Chuin
The paintings I saw in the Memorial Hall possess different artistic spirits. Those painters have similar ideas in mind, but they can create unique works in the end. I think that is a hard thing to achieve, unless there is tacit agreement between them. However, my mother told me that there is nothing impossible in the world, unless I am afraid. So, I believe that I will success if I try hard. Possibly all I need is one small step forward. We should never give up in half way, or we may waste all the efforts we put in before.
Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall as in portrait of “Dr. Sun Yat-Sen”, by Lu, Yen-Shu
I typed the verbatim transcript of the wording on the back of the pad given by the Memorial Hall on Tuesday, 13th December as follows: In commemoration of the our National Father, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen for his leading the national revolution and creation of Asia’s first democratic republic, the Chinese Cultural Renaissance Organization invited Chinese-American painter Li bin to denote this giant painting, “Our Founding Father”, he elaborated for two years. Advice has been offered by experts of historical academic circle, and sponsors from people of all sectors have been provided. “Our Founding Father” is composed of the background of the territory of Republic of China, and the national flag of fluttered in the air, in colors of “blue sky, white sun and red earth” symbolizing the spirits of freedom, equality and fraternity as well as Dr. Sun’s ideal, with which he dedicated himself to the establishment of a better country with the Three Principles of People.

The centerpiece of the painting is a portrait of Dr. Sun, presented as in his later years, depicting his great image after he had endeavored for our country. Behind his figure are over a hundred most respectable martyrs in the history of the national revolution, arranged in space appropriate for their respective chronicle order of major events, membership context and relationship to Dr. Sun. important historical treasures are also suitably disposed in the peripheral of the painting, including Dr. Sun’s calligraphies, stamps, flags and government orders.

In the form of fine art with image thinking, this painting presents a magnificent historical fact. That gives the viewer an instant feeling of the generosity with which Dr. Sun and the martyrs dared, moved on, worked together and carried out till the end for founding the Republic of China. It also contains a surging and grand vitality of the people to remember to us Dr. Sun’s last words: “The revolution is not yet complete; Comrades, you should carry on!” The spirit of “fraternity” and great belief of “The World Belongs to Everyone”. It also encourages us to embrace his mentality of “fraternity” and “world for all” to fulfill, together, his wish to strive and save China and the world in peaceful way.
Everyone is different, by Tasi, Chang-Heng
In Chung Shan National Gallery, three equally competent painters, who “share their breath of art and create in different delicacy”, exhibit. Their works are different, having their respective creativity; so, they are distinctive. One does contemporary art, the others more retro; of all the works I believe each cost much effort. Liao, Shiou-Ping is prone to contemporary art, which is the style I favor.
A visit to Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, by Chen, Wen-Ning
I just could not wait in the girl scout classroom to visit the Memorial Hall, where I seldom go. I have expected every visit to it. In the course of the visiting, I always ponder on the things I just learn; after all, a revolution gives me different thinking in many ways. On the way back to the school, we chatted gaily, but, in fact, everyone has gained a lot from visiting the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. It was like entering another world when we approached the school. It was not a feeling like hard to part but like walking in the school in Dr. Sun’s spirit, a kind of valiant feeling. When on campus, the moments during the visit still come back from time to time.
Quotes quotable
Aspiration, recommended by Lu, Yen-Shu
I am recommending you to have aspiration. One should have the aspiration of the big aspiration as a citizen, to focus on doing one thing to help make our country richer and stronger.—“Welcoming speech for students in Lingnan, Guangzhou”, the Complete Works of Sun Yat-Sen, Volume 8.
Reasons of recommendation: What I gave you is for you to have aspiration. You should have aspiration to re-pay your country. Focus on one thing for our society, which helps your country to be richer and stronger. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen gave us such good and liberal environment with the purpose for us to have enough resources to re-pay our country and make it richer and stronger.

No matter what scale of the business, or whatever the rank of an official, without aspiration, one is engaged in nothing even if he is as high as a king or a president. On the contrary, with aspiration, even a petty official or a construction worker can accomplish someone important.—Speech at dinner in Hangzhou Military Department, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, volume 3
Reasons of recommendation: whatever trade you are in, or how much you are paid, you cannot do anything even at the position of a ruler or a president without aspiration. But, small as he is, a worker who has great aspiration can be somebody remarkable. Our Founding Father said the above to emphasize the importance of aspiration by using the analogy of a king without aspiration vs. a worker with aspiration. A civilian with aspiration cab be deemed great.

Altruism, recommended by Yang, Zu-In and Lu, Yen-Shu
Say no success about saving the nation, but whether it is right…. We make commitment, we should expect to live with the nation and die with it. Take Wen, Tian-Xiang of the Sung Dynasty, for example, what he left is still some sense of righteousness of the universe.—from the speech at the Welcoming ceremony by Police and Military in Guangdong Province, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, volume 9
Reasons of recommendation: Dr. Sun Yat-Sen made this passage because of the intense patriotism. He hoped to retain some sense of righteousness of the universe as Wen, Tian-Xiang of the Sung Dynasty did. He also wanted to live or die together with the nation, which demonstrated how patriotic he was.

Whether the republic exists or perishes, whether our fellowmen will be happy or miserable, whether the revolution succeeds or fails and whether we are sad or joyous all rely on this action. The only way to save the nation and the people and be dedicated to the public and ourselves is strive, all for one and one for all, without retreat.—from the Oath on the Northern Expedition, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, volume 6
Reasons of recommendation: Dr. Sun Yat-Sen believed that as whether the republic exists decides whether the people live well and whether the revolution will succeeds decides one’s happiness, be it to save the nation or to save the people, it would be all the same, to do for the public and to strive. If all is with one heart, we keep marching on without retreat.

In the quest of a wealthy and strong nation, we should put ourselves together and get united to march forward all together. Never be so selfish as to know nothing about where the nation is but where we, ourselves, are. Once we are so committed, we are committed as a citizen.—from the “Welcoming speech for students in Lingnan, Guangzhou”, the Complete Works of Sun Yat-Sen, Volume 8.
Reasons of recommendation: I think Dr. Sun wanted to tell us not to be selfish, but to think for the people, for that is the only way to make a successful revolution and gain people’s trust.

Quotes quotable by Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, recommended by Chang, Kai-Chuin
Education should be promoted in this newly established country to facilitate civilization and speed up progress.—from “Order for Educational Ministry to establish girls school of silk industry”, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, volume 2.
Reasons of recommendation: I personally think the quote a good inspiration. Education is important to people, for without education, we won’t be as civilized as we are, and perhaps we would be ignorant as in pre-historical times. Education helps civilization develop faster; so, we have to promote it as much as we can. We should not take the education that is very close to our daily lives lightly, such that people should be more civilized.

I expect that all the talents in this country do all they can and work hand in hand to facilitate the civilization in our country.—from the Speech at the Headquarters of Chinese Nationalist Party in Shanghai, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, volume 5.
Reasons of recommendation: If there is no collaboration between us all, there will be no progress for a country. How can you form the forest with one tree alone? If all the talents in the world shine with their most powerful abilities, while the countries cooperate, then every nation is benefitted.

Without striving, there is no survival. And, without an object, no striving can succeed. –from Mail reply to Wu, Xing-Han, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, volume 5.
Reasons of Recommendation: If you do not try hard, you wouldn’t have any hope, because not any smallest miracle would happen. However, you still cannot make it even if you tried hard and, which means what has been said as efforts without direction. It is like running in the dessert, without a destination, you get nowhere as long as you run. The best way is to be certain of an orientation and of which direction is more practical. These are equally important and, missing either one, you are not in the track to success.

A man is not born a genius, but learned knowledge can be pursued.—from “Introduction to Military Studies”, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, Volume 3.
Reasons of recommendation: Whether you are smart or not is determine when you were born. You could not possibly ask to be born smarter. Although it is the case, hard work will make up for the intrinsic insufficiency. Nobody is born with knowledge; geniuses are just those who learn faster. So, if you work hard, you may also match them or even exceed them. And that is definitely possible.

No matter which country you will go study in, or what subject you will study in the future, you must be successful as long as you work hard and learn well.—from “Conversation with Chinese students in France”, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, Volume 5.
Reasons of Recommendation: What you’ve learned or what you will study is not important. If you put tireless efforts into working and studying, you shall be successful in the future. This was what Dr. Sun wanted to tell us. Thus, we should focus on the present, let go of the previous success or failure. To be on the track of success, one must work hard on now on.

Quotes by Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, recommended by Tasi, Chang-Heng and Chang, Kai-Chuin
The development of the world’s civilization took place within the last two hundred years and especially fast in the last five or six decades. Ever since then, humans know more knowledge and the progress in civilization becomes faster.—from Welcoming speech in academic circle in Guilin, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, volume 6
Reasons of recommendation: The development of civilization lies in every big step which is made up of many small steps of many persons. If everyone makes a small step, developing more knowledge, the world will then have infinite hope and unlimited development.

The development of the world changes with knowledge. Since humans have existed, there must have been experts who invented all kinds of theories, following which, all types of politics and business develop.—from the Welcoming Speech to academic circle at Hu Guang Society in Beijing, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, volume 2.
Reasons of recommendation: If every human being cooperates with each other and does his part, various sectors together can develop something that makes the world a better place. For example, the world’s technology improved may develop the cure for cancers that used to be cureless, making folks happy and the world better.

Inspiration from Dr. Sun’s quotes, by Chen, Wen-Ning
No matter which country you will go study in, or what subject you will study in the future, you must be successful as long as you work hard and learn well.—from “Conversation with Chinese students in France”, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, Volume 5.
Reasons of recommendation: Dr. Sun spoke the above to the students. For them, they would be sure to believe it and absorb it if they thought it right; otherwise, they would not absorb it. But, I approve of it. Though these words by Dr. Sun Yat-Sen are interpreted by many different angles, I figure as a rebellious junior high school student. Regarding the demands from certain parents which are over expecting, the pressure is high for junior high school students like us, who are faced by the basic competence test; we seem to have no other choices because the roads ahead have been planned by others. But, I like to inspire my close classmates with what Dr. Sun has said, as your parents hope to see you with certain achievement and you can choose a road you like. You should work hard and really learn as Dr. Sun said, so that as long as you use such spirit in whichever road, you are sure to achieve something.

Hence, today when the nation changes from an old one to a new one, we should discard the old thinking and develop new thinking. And what is the new one? It is the public spirit.—from the Speech at the welcoming meeting at Guangdong folk society in Guilin, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, Volume 6
Reasons of recommendation: These words by Dr. Sun touch me much. To have the nation change from an old one to a new one, controlling people’s thinking is no way, as in a nation which advances, the people’s thinking must be constantly updating. An individual is affected by old thinking in his behavior, speech and attitude, let alone all people of the whole nation who are confined by old-school thinking. Dr. Sun told us to be progressive and not to block our own thinking. I believe this can inspire us as one being learning.

Learn whatever possible in the time as a student and you can put them to use along with the spirit of revolution. Without such spirit, what you have learn throughout your life is useless.—from the Speech on the first day at the Military Academy, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, Volume 10
Reasons of recommendation: This passage again is important talk to students. Take studying for a very simple example, without the spirit of making good grades, you cannot obtain high scores even if you memorize the whole content of the textbook. It is because memorizing without the basic spirit is as good as only writing out the exercise book. So, when I see any of my classmates memorizing without understanding the classic Chinese articles, I cannot help but telling them this quote from Dr. Sun.

Make good use of time and study hard on knowledge of various kinds useful to serve human kind. When you acquired the learning, you should aspire to serve the country and the society as well.—from the Speech at the Huanghwagang memorial meeting at Lingnan University, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, Volume 10
Reasons of recommendation: Recently, we were just taught in Chinese class that the fruit harvested at premature time is not sweet. This is time we should study hard, as we are not mature yet. We study hard for the purpose of re-pay to the society, which offers this good environment for studying. So, we should repay by studying hard.

Philanthropy and great aspiration, recommended by Yu, Yen-Ling , Chang, Yu-Shuen , Lin, Yu-Ting , Wang, Hsiang and Wang, Hao
People loving is seen separately in world saving, people saving and nation saving; but they all are in the nature of philanthropy.—from the Speech to the Army of Yunnan, Jiangxi and Guandong at Guilin, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, Volume 6
Reasons of recommendation: Everyone has a loving heart. He who uses his loving heart is a people loving one. The loving heart is not restricted to the subjects of classmates, or family members. We can expand its boundary to philanthropy; for example, at the school, helping our classmates by teaching them the subjects they do not understand and cleaning the campus together to make the school cleaner. Though we are only junior high school students now and what we can do to be philanthropic is limited, as long as we embrace the people loving thought and so motivated, we may probably really achieve the great status of world saving, people saving and nation saving. We can have a broad mind starting now, but, as a student, we should do our part well to be able to really fulfill the nature of philanthropy in the future. Hence, we should know ourselves and learn the profound knowledge like Dr. Sun and the humble attitude like our teachers, such that we have the faith without being arrogant now and in future as well. That is very important and helps us tremendously.

In the spirit of helping mutually and loving all, we seek the eternal consolidation of the group; all with one heart and one virtue, we manage through the difficult time now, whereby to make our nation glorious.—from a “Letter in reply to Chiang Dao-zi at Guanmoyuan”, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, Volume 5
Reasons of recommendation: Besides helping mutually and loving all, one in the group should have positive thinking toward the group. It takes one in the group to stick to the team object and to make it through the obstacles together. And such thinking is required to possibly further be contributive to the country. That inspires us, the junior high school students, much, because faced by the pressure of academic advancement, we, the classmates are both helping and competing each other, which is a contradiction we do not like. But, fortunately we have the girl scout corps leader who leads us in the making of the web page project with her specialty as girl scout teacher. In the course of the research, we did cooperate and face troubles together, hence we believe competition can be reduced and mutual helping and loving all can be increased. I hope to have more of such experience in the future.

Never slack our determination in sacrifice and our spirit of mutual helping.—from a “Letter in reply to Chiang Dao-zi at Guanmoyuan”, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, Volume 5
Reasons of recommendation: The heaven treats us all equally, because whatever condition you are in, you have 24 hours a day when living and because we do different things, we have different results. Being students now with studying as our duty, we can do our part well by having the determination to sacrifice and the spirit of mutual helping and not slacking. Yet, we should help ourselves before helping each other; do our own part so that our family is not worried and we do not add to the trouble in class, and then, we will be able to help our classmates and in other things. So, when you always speak of others negatively, why not think about this quote by Dr. Sun. We believe self-reflection is important too.

I hope you do not become suddenly discouraged due to small setbacks. Persist so as to pursue progress, then hopefully it will work out shortly.—from a “Letter in reply to Lu Shi-ti and Yang Hu”, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, Volume 5
Reasons of recommendation: Eight or nine things out of ten we do are adversity. Never think yourself as the most miserable man just a setback occurs, nor be frustrated due to troubles, as failure is the mother of success. We think ourselves fortunate enough to exercise this project on un Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, because our teachers said that most of the students today think it unnecessary to repeat a second attempt, which means we are insufficient in hard work and diligence as a student. Hence when setback occurs to our learning, we should imitate Dr. Sun’s perseverance, with which he finally succeeded in the revolution at the eleventh attempt. If we embrace such spirit and act in such way, we would not think the setback we face as the results of others. Instead, we should have the room for improvement if we can think of ourselves.

Winning and losing are all common things to us. We failed last year, but we can succeed this year. We fail this year, but we can succeed next year. We fail for one or two years, but we shall succeed in ten years or a hundred years.—from the Speech at the Party of Merchant groups and police of Guangzhou, The Complete Works of Yat-Sen, Sun, Volume 9
Reasons of recommendation: Be cool to face winning and losing, but do not give up re-trying. In ninth grade, we take review exams regularly, in each of them if we can understand what we have learned and have not so that in a next exam we will not make incorrect answer in what we have learned and get to understand what we have not learned, then we might improve. Never give yourself up; otherwise, you only become less confident. That is regarding the studying. When in life there is no absolutely correct answers, when the direction is not for us, just forget it, because it is a time of diversity, and no one is perfect in every way. If you know clearly you are not in the right track for you, take another—you never know what lies ahead. We think that is the best inspiration from this passage of Dr. Sun’s.

I would advise you all to be committed to doing things great not being high official. For a student to be committed, the priority is to think about achieving something; if one achieves something, he can seek happiness for all. It is seeking happiness of all that is the focus of modern thinking of mankind.—from “Welcoming speech for students in Lingnan, Guangzhou”, the Complete Works of Sun Yat-Sen, Volume 8.
Reasons of recommendation: Doing something is doing something, and not only doing one’s part well, but also thinking of so doing can benefit the public. Altruism is doing something for the good of the public and making the nation advance forward. We think Dr. Sun had a vision with such thought. That making contribution by doing what one cannot for fame or money is exactly doing something impresses us. Such philosophy junior high school students like us, doing this project, can embrace in our teens is so positive. We hope we or others can fulfill as Dr. Sun said: doing something for the good of all.

You should be committed to think up of some way of saving the poor and the weak, an ambition that everyone should have.—from “Welcoming speech for students in Lingnan, Guangzhou”, the Complete Works of Sun Yat-Sen, Volume 8.
Reasons of recommendation: This passage makes us think that man should remember what he has now so that he would not be discontented or greed. He should also think that he is blessed, where everything for him is the best arrangement; he should further use his power to help those poorer or weaker than he and be a giver rather than taker. Such words by Dr. Sun are more than his thinking; they are a philosophy of life we can exercise. If we make the commitment to save the poor and the weak now, we and others will be happier.

Everything is achieved after adversity. Once the obstacle is overcome, the roads ahead must be smooth.—from a “Letter in reply to Cao Juin-fu and Wang Zi-zhong”, the Complete Works of Sun Yat-Sen, Volume 5
Reasons of recommendation: The proverb goes, “How would the plum blossoms smell fragrant if the winter had not been extremely cold”. Some students today are reluctant to overcome difficulties, where they give up to a slight trouble. Unlike them, others listen to the specialized teaching of their teachers and superior; they keep improving on their own deficiencies or endeavor to improve their academic results. God helps those who help themselves. So, one should help himself by being willing to face the adversity. Things in the world need to be finished by many people; so, to accomplish such things, one should first learn to be strong.

Mind the fostering and engaging of talents, as the affairs in future must rely on multiple talents. I hope that all the talents in the nation to do their best and cooperate to seek the progress of the nation’s culture.—from the “Statement of Inauguration as the President”, the Complete Works of Sun Yat-Sen, Volume 5
Reasons of recommendation: This passage reminds us that a leader of group should be able to know who are talents and how to nurture them. He should not see himself as the best as he is the leader, nor should he listen all the times to only just a few. He should be able to judge, knowing the merits of each one which makes such person competent for something—that is knowing who are talents. A leader should also find the persons in the group who can be nurtured, because things change. In occasion, the word “apprentice” means talent being nurture.

To educate, it requires knowledge. In students, their knowledge is definitely dependent on the teachers; therefore, the teacher’s responsibility is huge….The education is well done, then there is hope of equal rights between men and women.—from the Speech at the Second Normal School for Girls in Guangdong, the Complete Works of Sun Yat-Sen, Volume 2
Reasons of recommendation: This passage illustrate why we admire Dr. Sun Yat-Sen: the idea of taking education seriously, the importance of teacher’s specialty and education being able to create sexually equal rights was very advanced back in those days as is emphasized today. We are impressed at such cutting-edge idea remaining to exist on this date.
A tour recommended
A place worth visiting, by Chang, Kai-Chuin
In my opinion, I think Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall is a great place to visit. There are water dance in the pond, many brass statues and guards’ handover ceremony every hour, which is a spectacle. The Memorial Hall is worth visiting, where you can stroll in whichever way you like. If you like seeing brass statues, you can visit Yu, You-Ren’s statue and study his history and achievements. If you like epigraph, you can go to the famous Chung Shan forest of tablets, where it is a heaven for all epigraph-lovers!

If you visit the Memorial Hall in the morning, you enjoy the scenery while walking in the Hall, where it is air-conditioned, to keep off the heat during the day. Apart from the scenery, you can check out the collections in the Memorial Hall and catch a sense of the old times.

In the afternoon, you can go see the statues, Tsuei Lake and Chung Shan forest of tablets. The air will be much cooler then, and you can stay to see the sunset. Besides, you can learn some life attitudes from reading epigraphs and Yu, You-Ren’s life accomplishments, too. Let’s visit the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall together!

A day in Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, by Chen, Wen-Ning
At nine a.m., when the Sun is still low, go by the Tsuei Lake to see the natural scenery; and it is cool there with the water. You can have tea and chat with your friends in the Cuiheng Pavilion. At about ten, stroll about the Chung Shan Park, listening to the birds. At noon, you can have a simple lunch at the restaurant on second floor of the Memorial Hall. After lunch, you can observe the guards’ shift changing at the main hall on ground floor, followed by a walk along the exhibition hall on the right side, which will give you a clear understanding of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen’s life. At two p.m., when it is the hottest, you can read books and newspaper in the reading room in the basement, or read your books without being disturbed in the Studying room. Time passes fast in reading hours. At four p.m., when the Sun is not so strong, you can check out the American ice cream museum.。
