Our Good Neighbor – Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall by Lu, Yen-Shu
Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial hall is located inside Chungshan Park. There are also man-made ecological pool, Green Lake, as well as all kinds of epigraphy in Chungshan Epigraphy Forest. Next to Green Lake, there is an American ice cream culture center where you can buy all types of delicious ice creams. Many tourists can also take a rest there.

Taipei 101 is located on the left of the front door of the Memorial Hall, while Cathay Life building is on the right front. Right in front of the gate of Memorial Hall, there is a water fountain. Performances of water dance often display in the fountain regularly. In the nights, there are colorful lightings with the water dance. There is also a flag tower near the front of the fountain. In front of Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, residents of the area usually practice dancing or artistic performances here. Walking in from the front gate, you will see a solemn statue of our National Father. It weights 16.7 tons and was designed by Professor Sheng, Yi-Fan. Two guards are standing on each side of the statue. There are three types of guards distinguished by the colors of their uniforms: the air forces are wearing in blue, the armies are wearing green and the navies are wearing white. There is handover ceremony per hour performed by the guards.

Apart from regular exhibitions inside the Memorial Hall, many well-known painters’ works from Taiwan and China also displayed here. Since it is the cerebration year for Taiwan turning the 100th years, many activities were held in the Memorial Hall for memorizing the hundred-year-old of our Nation and our Father.

In addition, the Memorial Hall provides varieties of relaxations to people. They tend to have speeches or performances here. Besides, there are two reading rooms and one study room free of use in the basement.
The Unnoticed Sights in Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall by Chen, Wei-Ning
In a busy city like Taipei, you don’t only have Daan Forest Park for relaxation. Another great option is Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. Apart from the building itself, many children love to play on the square outside. Some elderly people also enjoy doing exercises there in the sun. Though there’re many buildings stood near the Memorial Hall, the natural surrounding inside the square is fairly comfortable. It is definitely a good place to visit for weekends.

A statue of Sun, Yat-Sen stands in the lobby of Memorial Hall. On both side of the statue, two loyal guards stood day and night. Each hour, there will be handover ceremony, which is one of tourists’ favorite shows to watch. The loud sounds burst out when the gunshots shaken the grounds, a sense of solemnity fills the air immediately.

There’s an Exhibition Room on the right side of the lobby. In there, tourists and local Taiwanese can understand clearly the life events of our National Father. Many of his belongings were showed in the room with detailed introductions. Most of the time, the exhibition contains researches about our National Father’s ideas of revolutions or the pens and papers he used during that time. In addition, many of his interactions with Soong, Ching-Ling and his personal notes are displayed, too. Visitors then have the opportunity to observe Sun, Yat-Sen outside of his political life.

For some students preparing for their exams, the basement area of the Memorial Hall might be the best place to encourage them to study. For children who like to take a rest after playing outside, children’s reading room will be great for them to calm down and read. In addition, adult’s reading room is also available on the other side. Apart from reading, many research activities are held in the Memorial Hall and thousands of people participate with great passion. Memorial Hall’s basement area allows people to be closer to this place any time they want.

There is also Green Lake that’s named after Sun, Yat-Sen’s hometown. Unique turtles in the lake sometimes come out of water for sunbath when the weather is fine. Tourists enjoy the scenery a lot. Chungshan Epigraph Forest is on the West of Memorial Hall. It is one of the biggest epigraphy forests in Taiwan with several Granites and mottos of our ancestors on them. Once you read through all the mottos, you will surely keep those words in heart and gain something from them. There is one more place that impresses people greatly, which is a wide fountain in front of Memorial Hall. Following different schedules, a variety of water dances along with Taiwanese folk music are performed regularly. It is indeed a magnificent scene.

In the future, Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall is hoping to continue improving their software and hardware facilities. They also expect more people to know about Memorial Hall, to do activities and to be closer to this place. I hope I could one day see more kites flying in the sky of Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall.

Another Location for Learning Something New by Chang, Kai-Chuin
Today, my partners and I joyfully took the bus and paid our visit to Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. We arrived slightly early, but we still went in Studying Room the first thing to wait for the staff that will meet us today.

Once it was time, we met up with the staff immediately. At the beginning, she took us to see a film that introduced everything in Memorial Hall as well as the great and fascinating Chungshan tower. I felt that I know more about Memorial Hall instantly after the film. Later, the staff gave us detailed and interesting introduction of Memorial Hall that I enjoyed every bit of it. She told us that our National Father was not intended to start revolution at first, but he had no choice at the time. The lady’s explanation made me deeply understand the purpose of building Memorial Hall and the life of our National Father, Sun, Yat-Sen.

It was a very interesting visit. Though I live very closely to Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, I’ve never thought of understanding its’ construction process or the meaning behind the building. I’ve only come here for short visits before, but I’m doing a much profound research on Memorial Hall now. I do have a different feeling towards it after today!
About 100 by Yang, Zu-In
We arrived Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall early today, so we read along in the basement area. There are Exhibition Room, Studying Room and Researching Room down there. When I visited Memorial Hall before, I was only aware of the statue of our National Father and handover ceremony by the guards. However, I’ve no idea about the souvenir museum, Sun, Yat-Sen library and other places.

In the film the tour guide of Memorial Hall showed us today, I learned that the height of Memorial Hall is about 30.4 meters, each side is 100 meters and the door is as high as 20 meters. Inside, the area of Memorial Hall is 30000 square meters. I can’t help but feeling the enormous of this place.

The guide also told us about the picture of our National Father on 100 NT dollars, which was drew by a person named Hsu, Jiu-Lin. Besides, Wang, Da-Min is the person who built Memorial Hall with the style of Tang Dynasty. In addition, there are 100 peaches placed on the handle of stairs next to Chungshan tower. I learned that peaches are the symbols of longevity. Meantime, the number 100 is because of the 100th-year-old of our National Father and of our country.
The Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall that I have no idea about by Chen, Wei-Ning
After the staff of Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall gave me a detailed introduction about this place, I have different opinions about here than before. Before, I thought our National Father was a serious character. However, now I’ve learned about his habits, daily lives and emotions toward Soong, Ching-Ling. My feeling for him is a bit different now.

I thought it must take Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen a lot of time to accomplish such tremendous revolution plan. However, after studying his life events, I realized that he passed away when he was 60-year-old. He did not live as long as I imagined. But he had done so many amazing revolution plans when he was alive, I found him a great person.

I’ve always confused about Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen’s revolution ideas, when in fact he had studied abroad, became a doctor, and was clearly very well-off. Today, I then deeply understood his unsatisfying opinions toward the unfairness in the society. After walking around Memorial Hall with the guide, I no longer had the rush feeling to complete the tour like before. Instead, I understood thoroughly of the history of Memorial Hall and the life background about Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen. Though Sun, Yat-Sen had only been to Taiwan three-times by merely stopped over by the harbor, his active doings still brought positive influence to the people of Taiwan. This trip to Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall enabled me to understand a lot of revolution ideas in the old times.

After Visiting West Exhibition Room and Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen Library by Lu, Yen-Shu
This was a special visit. Last time, we visited East Exhibition Room. This time, we looked at West Exhibition Room and Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen Library. At the beginning, I saw the reel that our National Father had written “ An Unprecedented Epoch” on it. The meaning of those words represented the changes of Republic of China for the previous 100 years. Those changes will overrun the changes of China for the past thousands of years. Taiwan will become a more democratic and free country. The key word “Unprecedented” contains the changes of China for the past 100 years will be far greater than all the changes 1000 years ago.

Emperor and imperialism ruled the nation since thousands of years ago before Qing Dynasty. Emperor was the most powerful person in China and would not switch power with anyone until he passed away. In addition, it was not election but hereditary system that an Emperor was decided. If no revolution, an Emperor can have his power for as long as he liked. Such great power to run a nation was only controlled by one person or one family would surely lead to limited freedom to its’ people. It was the time that Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen was living in; it was also the time Republic of China was established. Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen hoped that he could change imperialism after the new nation is established. It is the meaning of “An Unprecedented Epoch”. Since 1911 to 2011, a lot had happened for the past 100 years. It seems that Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen can predict the future; the words he said in 1911 was accomplished in 2011!

In the past, people in China had an imbalanced phenomenon between the rich and the poor. Nowadays, per capital income of Taiwanese people is getting higher and higher. The reason being that people are allowed for having his or her own properties instead of many limitations in the period of communism. Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen Library is also an interesting spot to visit. At the time I was there, it was displaying the introductions of Taiwanese people’s foods, clothes, living and transportation in the old times. People in old Taiwan had very simple need for food, but all of the foods were with genuine materials.

Food companies were trustworthy and honest, which was something our food industries these days need to learn. Many food products are focusing on the packages instead of what are really inside in recent days. As for clothing, it was not as fashionable as nowadays. In the old times, women bought colorful fabrics they liked from shops and sew into clothes by themselves. However, we just bought already made clothes now in the clothes shops. The idea of making our own clothes has become a leisure activity for modern society. In terms of living, I was most impressed with the wooden door! The doors in the old times were made of wood, along with really heavy mental locks. I’m certain it was difficult to open a door! People may also have to worry about termites ate away all their doors…Since industry revolution took place in Britain, the fast speed of development of factories gradually took over handcraft industries. Technology industries were also progressing greatly.

Carriages replaced walking by foot, scooters replaced carriages, motorcycles replaced scooters and BMW replaced motorcycles. The industry of “transportation” started to develop quickly as well. From Keelung to Kenting, people don’t have to rely on walking anymore. Instead, we have faster, more convenient transportations. However, although old Taiwan was impoverished, it had a different kind of fun in life that we don’t have anymore today. In order to keep this precious memory, our government has been actively promoting all types of tradition cultural activities. I hope the old traditions can last forever.
The Differences Among Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen Library, West Exhibition Room and East Exhibition Room by Yang, Zu-In
In August, we went visiting and interviewing staff in East Exhibition Room. This time, we paid visit to Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen Library and West Exhibition Room. ” The moment we walked into Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen Library, we saw the slogan, “An Unprecedented Epoch. The tour guide asked if any of us knew the meaning; none of us did. The guide then explained: “It means that the changes of ROC for the past 100 years will be far greater than the changes of China for the previous 4000 years.”

After our visit, the tour guide took us to West Exhibition Room, where it displayed tools, clothes and living places of people in the old times. There was also a machine in the room. The guide told us it’s a tablet PC and we can take pictures in front of it. It is a very interesting tablet PC. First of all, we made our choices about male or female. Then it showed five kinds of clothes for either gender. However, the camera was too low for the height of boys and too tall for girls. I hope the camera can be adjustable in the future. The final step was to type in our e-mail address and had our pictures sent to us. It was fun!
The Trip to West Exhibition Room and Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen Library by Chang, Kai-Chuin
Today’s activity was very unique. We went to a special display with the staff who works in Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. I’ve never seen any exhibition in Memorial Hall before, so I looked forward to it. The theme for the display today was “An Unprecedented Epoch”, which emphasized on the changes of Taiwan for the past 100 years that were greater than thousands years of changes in China. It is a fairly new idea for me.

I listened to the explanation of the tour guide closely and realized the differences between the society when our nation was just established and the society we have today. Next, the guide helped us to understand more deeply of the lives of people when our nation was just started. I was very interested in the clothes that people wore in the old times. The clothes contained strong sense of cultural elements in them. The guide then introduced some festivals in Taiwan.

Apart from the festivals and traditions people kept when they moved from China, there were ceremonies of the aboriginals. They indeed increased the diversities of cultures in Taiwan. My favorite display was on the hallway, where many awards and medals about Taiwan were showed. There was the flag of Taiwan’s Deadflympic with signatures of well-know Taiwanese participants. I also saw Tseng, Ya-Ni in the display who is really famous in recent days. Besides, there was Flora Expo of Taiwan in the display that enables the world to notice us. Though Taiwan is a small country, we have such rich and abundant cultures. I’m also impressed with people who won victories for Taiwan internationally.
The Trip to West Exhibition Room and Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen Library by Chang, Kai-Chuin
The purpose of our visit today was very different from our last one. Last time, our tour guide introduced the life of our National Father, as well as the history of revolution plans. This time, we visited the exhibition in Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen Library with the theme of “An Unprecedented Epoch”. The theme is to celebrate the 100th years of the establishment of our Nation.

The sentence contained a deep meaning that no one or two comments can explain it clearly. This visit also focused on national progress after revolution, such as the manufacturing of motorcycles, buses and all kinds of clothes. I was impressed and took a lot of pictures! The national law also had great changes from the old periods of time to now. In addition, changes also happened on the aspects of foods, clothes, living, transportation, education and entertainment. In early days, people had simple diets while people today have more delicate foods.

In terms of clothes, they change from cheongsams to what we are wearing today, such a great difference! The living houses had slight changes from styles to furniture, which were all different from what we have nowadays. Though Taiwan has been through a lot, many wise people had provided their help to establish us a better life today. We have to be grateful of our ancestors, especially our National Father, Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen.
New Developments and Changes by Tsai, Chang-Heng
The exhibitions I saw today were focusing on historical events and daily lives. For the historical display, it described Xinhai Revolution led by Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen. However, Dr. Sun was a scholar instead of warrior. Naturally, people who wanted revolution were all warriors, but Dr. Sun did not know how to use knives or guns. Therefore, he was always the plotter behind the scene. This exhibition explained many events in Xinhai Revolution in details that I found quite nerve-racking. I remembered a picture showed a person in Qing Dynasty who cut off his plaits after Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen overthrew Qing government. It represented the end of Qing Dynasty.

Besides, another exhibition in Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen Library was about people’s daily lives, including foods, clothes, living, transportation, education and entertainment. As for foods, dishes from all over China were introduced, such as Guandong dishes, Hunan cuisine and Shanxi cuisine. For clothes, many aboriginal outfits were displayed. One of the outfits was wore by Jiang, Jingguo with five stars placed on either side of his general uniform. As for entertainment, huge televisions with many functions were displayed in the exhibition. It was a great design for the old times.

New Experience by Chang, Kai-Chuin
What feeling do I have when I sat on the president’s seat in Grand Hall? Tiring! We climbed four floors in a few minutes because there are 2600 seats and 35 rows in total. We were tired once we were up there. The stage in Grand Hall is amazingly huge! Later, we went to some galleries where they were all named after our National Father, such as Yat-Sen Gallery and De-Ming Gallery. Professional critics selected all the paintings in the galleries, so they are all very impressive and beaufitul. I enjoy seeing those paintings greatly.
Experience for My Heart by Chang, Kai-Chuin
We went to Grand Hall this time. The chairs in Grand Hall were comfortable for everyone to have nice meetings and watch performances. However, I do think there were too many floors. It took me so much effort to climb up there! It can probably be improved by making the building wider and lowering the height of floors. A bunch of us also visited galleries. People in the galleries asked us to sign before going in. Therefore, I wrote down my name nicely with calligraphic brush. I enjoy the paintings in the galleries a lot and they were all selected by professional critics. I think I’ve gained a new experience in this trip.
Casual and Elegant Personality by Chang, Kai-Chuin
I wrote down my name with calligraphy brush, though I’ve never written calligraphy before. However, once I wrote down my name, I found that I’m quite talented! My characters were casual and elegant, though I did feel a sense of nervousness before I started. After all, it was my first time. But I conquered the difficulty and completed the mission. I believe calligraphy can help a person’s personality, since many well-know people in the old times can write beautiful calligraphy. Many people today learn calligraphy to improve their handwriting. However, beautiful handwriting is not everything; we still have to keep elegant and positive personalities.
The Process of Learning by Chang, Kai-Chuin
I always look forward to the things we will visit each time we go to Memorial Hall. During the visit, I often learn something new. I’m getting to know more and more about Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. I’m starting to understand the motivation of Dr. Sun to accomplish revolutions and his spectacular life. I should learn from our National Father. Every time I went home, I thought about what I saw in Memorial Hall. I now can see the reasons to build Memorial Hall in memory of our National Father.
A Trip to Chungshan Park by Yang, Zu-In
The tour guide who took us to visit Grand Hall said there are 35 rows and 2600 seats in total. My classmate Chang immediately sat on the president’s chair. I sat on his right and Chen sat on his left. Tsai sat on the left of Chen. After all, four of us ran all the way to the 35th row (equal to four floors) and looked at our teacher from there. Our teacher looked as small as a knuckle of our index finger. In the end, we went on the enormous stage. Though it was for fun, I was still nervous about going on a stage. I hope I could go again when I grow up.
Taking Pictures by Yang, Zu-In
We took pictures in many places, including Grand Hall and the west of the main Memorial Hall. I enjoy taking pictures, because I get to keep those happy memories and our close friendships. When we arrived Grand Hall, we also took pictures on the president’s seat as well as in front of a machine. We took so many pictures that I wish to keep them for my own memory.
Calligraphy by Yang, Zu-In
Calligraphy is good to build up elegant personality. Besides, writing calligraphy beautifully will help a person’s handwriting. I found calligraphy very interesting. I tried to write down my name with different styles and compared mine to my classmates’. My writing was very ugly, and I made up my mind to improve it when I go home. I do not want my writing to be so ugly for the rest of my life! I will try my best to improve my calligraphy from today!
Ancestors by Yang, Zu-In
I’m impressed with Indians who invented cipher; for them, we have mathematics today. At the meantime, I’m impressed with Chinese people who invented Chinese words. They invented my favorite form of character, semi-cursive script. From now on, I will always remember to say “please” and “thank you” when people offer help. I may not be what I am today if we don’t have the dedications from our ancestors!
The Trip to Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall by Tsai, Chang-Heng
On the 13th of December, we arrived at Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. There was Grand Hall in there that was used to hold national meetings before. Now it is transformed into a stage for plays, singing and other activities. It contains 2600 seats and 35 rows in total, which is an enormous and nice place. It has four floors, and people became as small as half of my finger when I stood on the top. It was really cool. I hope I could go there again to watch some performances. I’ve learned so much from this visit to Memorial Hall. I hope Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall can hold more new and interesting exhibitions in the three galleries in the future. In this case, everyone in Taiwan can come and absorb the latest information about arts.
To Visit Dr. Sun, Yat-Sen Library by Tsai, Chang-Heng
We were asked to sign our names before entering the galleries. After signing, I found myself liking my own calligraphy writing. It takes a lot of efforts to learn calligraphy well. I also enjoy every painting in the galleries. It was as if I went into the worlds of those paintings. Some of the masterpieces were so amazing that I can’t take my eyes of them. I wish I could buy one of them so I can appreciate them forever.
The History of Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall by Tsai, Chang-Heng
After going to Library History Room, I had a better idea about the history of Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall as well as its’ mightiness. About the idea of “One Generation Plants the Trees, Another gets the Shade”, I believe we all need the hard work of our ancestors to build a better environment for next generation. Steve Jobs was a great example who established Apple Inc., and provided us today more fascinating technologies. About please and thank you, since they’re part of basic manners and we should all bring them into our daily lives.
The Mightiness of Fresh Red by Chen, Wei-Ning
That day, the tour guide took us to Grand Hall in Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. Pushing open the heavy soundproof door, we saw 35 rows of seats with the color of fresh red. It contains 2600 seats and we were all impressed. The guide allowed us to sit on the chair.

I remembered clearly that my classmate Chang sat on the top of the president’s seat, and I sat on his left. Be able to sit on president’s seat and the seat next to it, we were all feeling proud and happy. The guide then asked if we would like to run up to the top row, it was as high as four floors. Everyone was too tired to talk after we ran up. Looking down, our teacher and the guide were as small as our knuckles. I like the feeling of holding the high ground.
Running up to the Top by Chen, Wei-Ning
Apart from National Concert Hall, it was my first time to see such enormous hall. I was really excited. Plus, the tour guide allowed us to sit on the first row and to taste the special feeling. My favorite part was to sit next to the seat of president, which was not a normal experience for everyone. Even if I did not sit on president’s seat, I was still impressed. I ran up 35 rows and was exhausted, however, I was feeling proud to be on top in the end. I thought to myself, if I could work hard and fight my way to the top of the class, I would be successful. In fact, it isn’t hard to be on top. The difficult part was to have the motivation and strong will to run. We need willpower to run to the top and be accomplished in life.
Focus by Chen, Wei-Ning
When those elderly granddads and grandmas were encouraging us to sign with calligraphic brushes, I was really embarrassed! I have not written in calligraphy for years, and I can’t even bear to see my own signature. However, though I didn’t hold the brush correctly, the characters I wrote were still up to my standard. My calligraphy teacher used to ask me to calm my heart and focus on writing.

For me, calligraphy is very similar to meditation. If we always learn the value of focusing, we also could cultivate our personalities of thinking twice before doing anything. Every movement of your pen requires thorough consideration, just like the things you will do in your life.
The Same Artistic Spirit, Different styles of Works by Chen, Wei-Ning
Every artist has his or her own profession. I used to hear people talk about the weird temper of artists and their persistence toward personal styles. It is the so-called artistic spirit; most of the artists share this kind of spirit. However, they create diverse and completely different works that each of the work they’ve done presented something unique. For example, artists belong to the same type may have very different way of painting or creating. Some artists even invented their own artistic type that I’m greatly impressed by their spirits.
Interesting Electrical Whiteboard by Chen, Wei-Ning
When we were visiting Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, the tour guide took us to some exhibition rooms. There is an interactive whiteboard in one of the rooms, which we can see ourselves put on traditional outfits if we stood in front of the board. It was interesting. In addition, the computer will send the pictures to our e-mail box. It was a precious but priceless souvenir. Apart from that, the tour guide gave each of us a pad with the picture of our National Father on it. I appreciated greatly of this special pad. On the back, several sentences were printed for the meaning of “the world belongs to everyone”, which I found very educational.

Feedback about Questionnaire by Yang, Zu-In
There were three of us to give out questionnaires, two girls and one boy. The other girl and I completed about eighty questionnaires while the boy only managed to get five. He is awful! We went to several places for giving out questionnaires, including the main building in Memorial Hall, Green Lake and Chungshan Park. In the end, we went back to Memorial Hall again. One time, a boy who filled in the questionnaire wrote that he has been to Memorial Hall main building and “the toilet”. Another time, a girl asked us which elementary school we went to! We replied: “We go to Ren Ai junior high school, year 8.” I gave out many questionnaires, but not all the responses were positive. A boy wrote down: “gender – beautiful girl; age – 65 years old; educational background – below elementary school.” In fact, he looked about my age!

We also found that it takes average ten minutes for an elderly person to fill in one questionnaire. However, it only takes a student three minutes. What a difference! In average, we have to ask eight people to get five of them who will like to fill in our questionnaires. If people didn’t want to help, I would feel a little embarrassed and annoyed. But there is nothing we can do but to ask more people!

Feedback about Questionnaire by Tsai, Chang-Heng
I went to Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall today for giving out questionnaires. I was nervous at the beginning, but gradually I started to have courage asking around. Though many people refused, luckily, there were still many who will like to help. Most people around Memorial Hall were elderly people and young people who were practicing dances. People like that always offer us help. There were times that we felt frustrated, but me and my other two teammates still lifted up the courage to try again. As long as we tried hard enough, I believe we will always find someone who will be nice to help us. We stayed in the area for three hours and caught quite a lot of sun. We had one drink during that time, but the weather was still too hot. Because of people’s help and our hard work, the mission was a success. I think Memorial Hall is such a nice place to visit, and the scenery is always lovely. I sincerely recommend everyone to go on weekends.

Feedback about Questionnaire by Chen, Wei-Ning
It was my first time to give out questionnaires, and I was nervous and afraid. After all, we have to try to talk to strangers and I can already imagine the embarrassing feelings if they refused to help me. However, with my teacher’s encouragement, I decided to be ahead of myself and change my shy personality. I encouraged myself and patiently gave out questionnaires. At first, I still worried. Later, I gradually gathered experiences after many times of failures. I found that elderly people took the longest time to fill in questionnaires, middle-age people were unlikely to help, and students took the shortest time to complete one paper.

Besides, they were most friendly and gave out the most detailed answers. At the beginning, I gave out questionnaires with my teammate. After a while, I started to do it myself. In this case, I can choose my interviewees and I was more likely to have interactions with them. I surpassed myself in the project and overcame the challenge. In addition, I got to know different types of people. There were also interesting experiences. For example, once I read out the questions loudly to an elderly person who can’t see clearly. I also shared opinions with high school students about studying, or told them about the school I went to. Though I spent a lot of efforts on questionnaires, I have gained so much spiritually that the experience was priceless. I’m grateful to be part of this project and it made me feel more grown-up and experienced. I hope I can receive more challenges next time through scout activities.

Our Hard Work by Lu, Yen-Shu
This week, we just finished our school exams. The first Saturday after exams, we went to Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in the early morning. After our teacher and classmates were all here, we started to give out questionnaires in the square. Many people from China sat in the square, and our teacher encouraged us to go ahead. I gave out many questionnaires to them, but they were so mean…I did not want anything from them, but many of them just waved their hands and refused to help. I tried my best to smile politely and ask for their help, but obviously they really did not want to be involved. I gave up completely in the end. Later, we went to the area near the Lobby. Every time I saw someone, I always bravely walked over and asked for their help. This project enables me to understand the importance of persistence and patience. I believe that I will learn from doing this project to be confident and courageous to conquer difficulties.

about Questionnaire by Yang, Zu-In
I want to thank everyone who helped to fill in questionnaires for us, because they were all very friendly. However, I’m not sure if some of them can’t read Chinese. Once, I gave questionnaires to a tourist from China. One of the questions was: “Where have you been today in Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall?” But he wrote down: “National Palace Museum and Taipei 101.” I really want to ask him if he really is from China? Another time, a high school student wrote “Toilet” for the same question…

Luckily, many people gave out positive and normal answers. People who only came today to dance in square would say they have not been to anywhere inside Memorial Hall yet. I’d then tell them to fill in “others”. The most embarrassing moment was a high school girl asked us: “Which elementary school do you go to? I can’t believe you have to write research reports at such young age…” I almost fainted right there. We were wearing junior high scout uniforms! My classmate explained that we are students of Ren Ai junior high school. She looked shocked, too. In conclusion, most people were normal in responses. It was just sometimes we would get funny answers!

Questionnaires for the Second Time by Chen, Wei-Ning
I was more experienced to give out questionnaires this time and I know what kinds of people will fill in my papers faster. This time, I tried to interview more tourists. However, it was much harder, as some Chinese people still had difficulties communicating with us. I accidentally interviewed two elderly people from China, and it was such hard work to complete my questionnaires. That time, I also met some senior students graduated from Ren Ai junior school and I was happy to talk to them. Besides, I met some junior students from an elementary school I used to go to, and I had a pleasant interview with them. When the day was almost over, I decided to ask more people. Stepping down the stairs, I went to Chinese tourists again. Unfortunately, it took me twenty minutes to complete one questionnaire.

We have language gaps, and they didn’t understand traditional Chinese characters. I had to explain the questions one by one to them and it was tiring. My father said it was also an experience for me. This time, I learned the skills to interview people. I remembered my shyness when I gave out questionnaires for the first time, and I was happy that I’ve improved. Though I did not get as many questionnaires as other classmates’, I hope I can still try my best. This was also the time that I understood the importance of teamwork. I would like to interview more people next time.

The Trip of 17th December for Questionnaires by Lu, Yen-Shu
I was late! I set my alarm the day before for half past seven. Unfortunately, I rolled over on the bed and the alarm clock rolled under the bed and broke. Zu-In rang me up at ten to nine – luckily I did not turn off my phone last night. I woke up quickly and picked up the phone. After that, I rushed out of my door with my bag. I didn’t even have time to comb my hair… By almost half past nine, I ran as quick as I can and rushed to Memorial Hall to meet up with the leader of our scout team Ms. Lin. After that, me, Zu-In and Wei-Ning started our project together. Luckily, there was a garden fair in the square in front of Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. People can buy food or play games if they use receipts to exchange tickets to enter. At least I didn’t see many Chinese tourists today. It is good to see many Taiwanese.

Though there were many people today, there were many elderly people, too. We decided to give out questionnaires from outside of garden fair first. If we reached certain numbers of people, we can also relax a little in the garden fair. My first interviewee was a girl wearing rabbit outfit who worked for the fair. She kindly asked me questions while filling in my questionnaire. We had a good time chatting. Time flies, Wei-Ning and I reached the numbers of interviewees we agreed. Two of us then started to walk around. I went straight to rabbit girl’s stand for milk tea and tealeaf egg. I did not have breakfast this morning! I also bought calamari balls; they were crispy and delicious! However, I think calamari balls from Tamshui are better. I was holding so many foods in my hands; I bet I looked like an African refugee who just won a lottery. Wei-Ning and I ate our calamari balls on the steps to Memorial Hall. After a while, Zu-In completed her works too. We discussed our next step and decided to walk around outside Memorial Hall.

We did not get as many interviewees as when near the garden fair. Though many people sat leisurely on the benches, they refused to fill in our questionnaires. I was disappointed. At this moment, I heard two foreigners’ speaking voices. I lifted up my spirit and ran to them. I asked one of them in English: “Would you fill in questionnaire for me?” They kindly agreed. When it came to fill in “occupation”, I didn’t know how to explain it so I turned to my teacher. But Mrs. Lin had no idea either. The foreigner who was filling in questionnaire suddenly answered my question for me. So he can speak Chinese! He couldn’t read traditional Chinese, so I read out questions to him and wrote down his answers for him. After the interview, I happily said my good-bye. It was a great experience. Today was the last time for us to give out questionnaires. We took pictures together and said good-bye to each other. I came home exhausted. It was finally lunchtime!

Respectful Staff in Memorial Hall by Lu, Yen-Shu
I think that as tour guides in Memorial Hall, they will have to understand the background of each picture, work or painting in a new exhibition. They also need to remember the stories behind those displayed items. Therefore, they need to have sufficient patience and clear voice to tell stories to everyone. Sometimes, some tour guides didn’t speak clearly and I found it so hard to note down what they said after their introduction. Before, in the exhibition of “An Unprecedented Epoch”,

I saw the display of “Farewell Letter to His Wife”. It was only a piece of paper, but I can feel the emotions from the writer Lin, Jiu-Min. He was just married to his beloved wife but he had to leave her for his country and joining revolution with our National Father. The writer hoped that his farewell letter could show his wife how much he wanted to stay with her. He loved her very much, but he hoped his wife could understand his complicated emotions when he needed to save his country. This sad but beautiful love story was written on this piece of paper, which everyone today can appreciate it. When I listened to the introduction from my tour guide, I as if saw the hot tears on the face of the writer, his shaking hand and his complex feelings when he wrote down the letter. Every item in exhibition is worth for us to understand. I believe it is also tour guides’ obligation to relay the beautiful stories behind each item to audiences.
My Gratitude by Chang, Kai-Chuin
I personally think tour guides should not introduce something by merely reading out from transcripts. Audiences will probably be so bored that they fell asleep in the middle of the tour! Tour guides should learn to observe people’s facial expressions. If most audiences are bored of certain topic, they should skip to next topic sooner. If it’s the opposite, then they can introduce as much as they like. In conclusion, their speeches should change constantly depending on situations. It requires a lot to be an excellent tour guide, but it is all for the benefits of audiences. In this way, audiences will no doubt have a good environment to listen to introductions of great items.
Grateful in Learning by Tsai, Chang-Heng
I think it requires a lot to be tour guides in Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. They need to memorize so much for different exhibitions, so they must be really good at remembering information. In addition, they need to have quick reaction towards questions from audiences or tourists. Besides, they must always be kind and polite, so people would like to listen to them. It is no easy job for anyone. I believe they all need to go through tough trainings.
Being Grateful by Yang, Zu-In
I think it requires three abilities to be excellent tour guides in Memorial Hall. First, they need to have confidence. Therefore, they wouldn’t blame themselves too much if they made some mistakes in their introduction. There’s a saying in China: “Even a horse may fall down sometimes; people can also make wrong decisions sometimes.” Second, they need to have strong leadership ability. Otherwise, no tourists will listen to you or follow your steps. Wouldn’t that be awful? Third, they need to follow the rules. If there’s people who are touching the display item in Memorial Hall, they need to be the person who stood up and told them not to. Otherwise, other people may start doing the same. Until then, Memorial Hall will become such a dirty and untidy place. The tour guides I respect all have the above three abilities, and I’m so impressed. I think they’re also doing great jobs because they’ve been doing it for so long. My future goal is to be a tour guide in museum. I want to be like them!
Give Thanks to Tour Guides by Chen, Wei-Ning
It is no easy job to tour guides in Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. They also don’t have transcripts to memorize, so they need to pay attention to news or read newspapers in their daily lives. I found that being a tour guide is like giving speech to audiences. When my mother trained me to give speech, all I do is read newspapers. Gradually I started to speak with system and logic. Besides, I think tour guides also need to learn new information and broaden their horizons. In this case, they can speak with audiences from a fair point of view. It is easy to say than do. If tour guides are capable of the above two characters, they will soon form a speech in their minds when they arrive at an exhibition.

They will not stammer in sentences or audiences may get annoyed and refused to listen. The tour guides in Memorial Hall always speak in fluent manner that I’m sure they studied constantly in their leisure times. Of course, tour guides need to raise different aspects to audiences, so we won’t be limited in one narrow idea. To contain diverse opinions in one speech is also a difficult thing to do. It is a hard work to be tour guides in museums and exhibitions. I hope I would one day capable of some of those abilities.

To be Grateful by Chen, Wei-Ning
A person cannot complete a project by himself. Most of the time, people around him offer help as well. When we visited Library History Room, we saw previous people who managed it. I am impressed. The reason for Sun, Yat-Sen Memorial Hall to remain neat and strong in Taipei City, there must be many people who put their efforts into preserving it. We also have experts who designed every corner in Memorial Hall. It is the idea of “One Generation Plants the Trees, Another gets the Shade.” I think everyone who comes to Memorial Hall for visit should give thanks to people who worked here before. We have such a good place because of their hard works.
Gratitude and Affection by Tsai, Chang-Heng
We have to give thanks to everyone who filled in questionnaires for us. Thank you for your help, encouragement and support. My teammates and me also tried very hard to give out questionnaires. We lifted up our courage to ask people near Memorial Hall. Though some people refused to help us, our team wasn’t frustrated at all. Most of people were still very kindly to fill in our questionnaires. I’m so grateful for those who helped. Apart from that, teamwork is also very important. We divide the work properly and finish our own responsibilities, so we get to accomplish a project that requires many people’s efforts.
Give Thanks to Those who Filled in our Questionnaires by Chang, Kai-Chuin
We should give thanks to everyone who filled in questionnaires for us, and to give us support and encouragement. Because of you, we have opportunity to continue the work. Because of a little time you spent on questionnaires, our teammate wouldn’t waste their efforts in giving out them. Here, I need to thank everyone’s hard work, including those who filled in questionnaires and those teammates who were responsible for questionnaires. Because of you, we can continue our project.

When giving out questionnaires, some senior students were practicing dances there. They kindly stopped of what they were doing and helped us. Our classmates were all very touched. I also give thanks to some Chinese tourists who were willing to help even if they were travelling. Although I wasn’t there giving out questionnaires, I’m still offering my spiritual support. I can’t go that day for I have classes, but I will try my best to help in other ways. I’m sincerely regretted that I couldn’t be there with my teammates on the day. Therefore, I put in extra efforts onto visiting attractions, studying research contents and making webpages. This event led me to understand that a person cannot complete many things all by himself. Therefore, we should never be arrogant or impolite. During this time, I experienced the importance of teamwork, as well as the attitude of gratitude towards people who offer help. Even if I might be capable of many things, I still have to learn to give and be humble to be successful.

The second highest of 20% are people who live near Memorial Hall. People from New Taipei City take as high as nearly 20%. The rest of the areas are all less than 10%. Our students found that tourists were less willing to fill in questionnaires. It could be because they were travelling with tight schedules. Therefore, we failed to gather information from tour groups. This research result also shows that Memorial Hall is developing attractions that are much more locally. It will gradually meet the needs of people who live in the north of Taiwan or in the nearby communities. In the future, Memorial Hall is expected to be one of the best place for sightseeing and relaxation for local communities and residents.

Research Result The results of three questionnaire researches show that there are as high as 50% of visitors who come to Memorial Hall for the purpose of “exercise and relax”. Our research team observe that many activity clubs practiced dancing, martial arts and Tai Chi in the square outside Memorial Hall. The second highest percentage is “visiting exhibitions”, such as the historical events of Dr. Sun and artistic exhibitions. This attraction is also very popular among visitors. The rest of the attractions are all below 10%. In addition, we found that one of the options “others” is taking the percentage of nearly 15%. In fact, our research team did not consider the purpose of “participating activities and fairs held on the square of Memorial Hall”. There are fairs for visitors to join regularly in Memorial Hall. Therefore, those fairs are also one of the tourist attractions.
