The government built up the national Dr. Sun Yat-sen memorial hall from 1964 in order to memorize Dr.Sun, Yat-sen’s grand personality and revolutionary accomplishment, and exalt his thoughts and theories. It not only for the use for public figures paying their respects, but also for the functions of culture and art, education, life leisure as well as academic research.

In 1965, according to the instruction from chairman of KMT, Chiang Kai-shek, in terms of commemoration of the centennial birthday for father of the Republic and enhancement and glorification of the father of his thoughts, the memorial hall was arranged to set up for accommodating domestic or overseas public figures as well as simultaneously providing a functional site for art & cultural activity, education & culture, academic research, and leisure park.

A drawing designed by Dahong Wang, an eminent architecture was selected through soliciting a design chart by the hall and an embellishment of intensifying Chinese architectural features on the exterior instructed by Chiang Kai-shek additionally. The project went into operation from 12th of March, 1968 and completed the architecture with a replica Tang Dynasty of upturned eaves on 16th May, 1972 after a four-year long construction.

The flat surface of the National Dr. Sun, Yat-sen Memorial Hall is presented as a square, topped with an exquisite curve roof laid by golden face bricks and a circle of colonnade surrounded the fringe. A spectacular portico comprised by colonnade upright directly at the entry of frontage which contributed to memorization of the architecture. Fastigium designed according to abstract and simplified conceptions; meanwhile, the body pushing back and shank with a procedure to surrounding colonnade and intensify the image of Chinese architecture accordingly. Further, the cozy space formulated by the distance between each pillar and the proportion to the integer.

The majestic main body of the architecture is situated at Zhongshan park, where soft green grasses carpet its ground and landscaped tree around, which became a dazzling and resplendent star. Further, it presents a complete new appearance to the domestic culture and art. The mall was subordinated to Taipei city government originally and changed to under ministry of education, as well as the name of institution change to the national Dr. Sun Yatsen memorial hall from management division of Dr.Sun Yat-sen memorial hall after merged with Chung-Sheng Building of Yang-Ming Mountain Volcano.

The original purpose for the foundation of the hall is for exhibiting historiography of the evolutions and achievements of Dr. Sun Yatsen. Besides, holding some performance activities irregularly. To date, it has become the largest multifunctional center of social education and culture in Taiwan. It possesses famous national recital hall and exhibition center with several thousand level ground, multimedia theater with novel facilities and equipments, audio visual center, Lecture hall, Cheng shan lecture hall, a professional library with above 300 thousand collections of books, tranquil Emerald Pond performance area and Chung Shan Park. All activities of the hall aimed at exaltation of Dr. Dr.Sun, Yat-sen’s esteemed ideals of “philanthropy” and “The word is for all people.” “The purpose of human life is to serve” for deepening the common people’s reverence and admiration to Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

It had built a considerable foundation since the first general director took office. After the developing of making great effort from each terms of directors, till now, the affairs of hall office are striding forward to the purposes of “ nationalization” and “localization” for cultural interaction, “ life-orientation“ and “popularization” for lifelong education and “professionalization” and “practicality” for hardware facilities. The mission of the hall thereafter is urging to combine spirits of Dr.Sun, Yat-sen with traditional culture for the sake of accomplishment of re-departure and re-enhancement on Chinese culture.
