The origin of Changhua Meatball can be traced back to a story of the natural disaster
and Peopleˇ¦s wisdom to survive. In 1898, there were heavy floods in Changhua. Many people
died in the floods, and the surivors had little food to eat. In order to survive, the local
people started pounding the sweet potatoes into powders, and mixed them with water and
sugar to make the first sweet meatballs as their food. However, after a while, people
became tired of eating the sweet food. They started adding salt instead of sugar to make
salt meatballs. Later on, pork, bamboo shoots and mushroom were added to make the savory
stuffing inside.
After years of improvement, the Changhua Meatball has spread to many different regions
of Taiwan and become popular specialties all over the island. Changhua Meatball first
appeared as surviving food for the refugees, but after more than one hundred years Changhua
Meatball has become the Crystal Pearl of Taiwanese food now.
