Evolution

In memory of the achievement of Messrs. Wu Zhen-hui and Guo Chi-zhang, the head of Kaohsiung County, Mao Zhen-huan, especially named the fish "Wuguo" from the surnames of these two young men, Wu and Guo. After that, different species of tilapias were imported to Taiwan continually. The import cases are as the following table:

The Red Tilapia is a representative cross-breeding species of Wuguo fish. The leader of the Fisheries Research Institute, Guo He, successfully crossbred the Red Tilapia in 1968. Furthermore, Guo He successfully crossbred the Blessed Fish in 1969, and the Blessed Fish gained much excellent public praise in the market. In 1975, the mono-sex Wuguo fish was successfully crossbred and raised island wide. Since then, the Wuguo fish is not an original species anymore, and it has become a unique and local species in Taiwan.
