Scraping Ramie Yarns: [Reporter:Kang-chuan Liu] [Advising teacher: Shou-liang Hsu][Source: Community experience]

(1)Process ramie leaves first, and cut its stick above root with reaphook.

(2)Hold the root of some (about 10-15 sticks) ramie sticks in hand, let the end with leaves face down, and get rid of leaves with the back the reaphook.

(3)Bark of ramie stick should be peeled off. Weavers should sit and straightly reach out legs, fixing 2-3 ramie sticks (only 1 for beginners) at the end by crossing thumbs of the feet when breaking sticks by hands (at the place about 2/3 of the stick). The stick would break correspondingly, but cortex of it is connected. Use ramie scratching tools made of bamboo to scratch the surface to reveal the fibre (presenting white silk & satin).

(4) Pay attention while taking yarn with ramie scratching tool that flexibility of wrist and palm is required for high quality yarn. The wrist movement of scratching ramie is kind of like pushing accelerograph while riding motorcycle, first pusing forwards (upwards) and then pulling backwards (downwards) twice, which can be repeated if necessary; palm movement refers to holding tightly while the tool pushed forwards to get rid of ramie bark by firmly clamping it. Flexible operation of wrist and palm enables clean and pure ramie yarn to be worked out.

(5) It would take about 20-30 minutes for beginners to learn the skill, who may feel ache in waist and legs after experiencing.
