Past Truku
female should learn weaving
since childhood and master
skill, otherwise they would be
discriminated, not able to pass
hakaw utux to the paradize after
death, who passing it should
know the weaving skill of miri
ratuk and pala msabung.
Traditional Truku weaving
requires trivial and strict
process, and a good work would
be made with each step and each
phase treated seriously (Ching-hsiang
Hu, Episode 1 of Traditional
Truku Songs).
Truku people would grow ramie in
the past accroding to the
environment, but Japanese
regarded ramie spinning as time
consuming, then depreciated the
living skill and prohibitted
development of the culture
during occupation. The clansman
were forced to move down the
hill and learn cultivation. In
interviewing Mrs. A-hsueh Liang
Li from Hongyeh Village, Wanrong
Township, she insists in weaving
completely following original
approach, namely, twisting hair
cords from planted ramie to be
flax thread as the weaving
material, weaving flax thread to
be a whole piece via traditional
weaving tools. In the interview
of weavers using ramie as
material, Mrs. A-hsueh Liang Li
(yuyuh) from Hongyeh Village,
Wanrong Township and Mrs.
Lan-mei Huang (yapon) from
Fushih Village, Shioulin
Township are revealed to be the
left two elderlys in Hualien
County, who possess traditional
advantages different from other
weavers, planting ramie in field
and using traditional weaving
machine, which were given up by
weavers because of time
consumption and upgraded to
current cotton thread or caddice
sold in market as well as
improved weaving machine
(desktop and floor) for
operation.

It is
impossible to go through the
whole weaving process of Truku
in such a short time. Here we
should give our appreciation to
Principle Cheng-guang Ke of
Lunshan Elementary School, Hualien County, who once
recordes the whole weaving
process of tribes in the Shanli
Village of
Chosi Township. He produced
“Making Rainbow with Ramie - Shanli Tribe”, regarded as an
important reference, so that we
contacted him by phone
specifically when he expressed
his wish to spread the excellent
tribe culture via the website.
Also we would thank
Ms. Shu-jun
Hua of our school for buying
"Making Ramie Cloth: A Hui Feels
Happy in “Cutting”" that enabled
the students to view the weaving
process of Mrs. Lan-mei Huang
from Shioulin Township before
interview and experience by
themselves.
