(1) Project background (TOP)

The early stage aborigine have lived different lives for different inhabited environments, Truku live in deep mountains all year long and they have deep emotions towards the nature, especially towards the clan plants which are closely linked with their lives. The traditional meals, weaving, bamboo houses and traffic all belong to Truku culture, among them, weaving is the most characteristic one, now it is also the most popular and most successful assets for Truku tribe to promote the culture industry. Although many tribe studios and outlanders have adopted the color matching and weaving technology, they have lost sight of the hardships that their forefathers have suffered when they collect the raw materials and few people understand the protophyte-ramie and the method and procedure to collect ramie yarn. Few elder have experienced this history for the changes of time and the influence of Japanese governing and Chinesization, are there any culture elder left in the tribe nowadays? The teachers and students of Jianqing Elementary School together with the volunteers of NDHU Sunny Club have borne the responsibilities of culture ambassadors and carried out intensive research in the tribe, they have undergone the operation and data compilation, they helped the local school to set courses with the assistance of their school resources, they hope to program the planting of the ramie field with the human resources and material resources of the district, they also hope to create series of activities in the future to pass down the culture and spread the life of the tribe.

Wanrong township is at central Hualien area, which is a long and narrow place in south and north direction, it is at the east foot of Central Mountains, the villagers of this county belongs to Truku and Bunun tribes, and most of them are Truku; in the old time, the Truku is a migration tribe, they used to scatter in the remote mountains, it is very hard to find them, what's more, they live self-sufficient lives and are not good at communicate with other tribes, so the data from literature record is limited. However they have possessed a rich culture, among which, face-tattoo culture and weaving culture(backstrap loom spinning) are the most special ones. In recent years, the government has worked out many systems to protect and promote aborigine culture, and this has also started a hot wave to dig out tribal culture, many elder and earnest people have exerted their zeal about the tribal culture, including Yusi Weaving Studio, Tusi Studio, and Malibas Studio of Wanrong Village, the cultural relic artworks of Ai-mei Feng, the warm-hearted and talented Payi-Iyang(Ce-mei Hu) and Payi-Uhay(Hui-fang Chung) who work on the traditional weaving, Rong-fa Li, Rong-gui Li and Jin-de Chiang who work on the making of ramie bating as well as the Sachi aborigine studio of Hongyeh Village and Rea leaves Mountain Hermit Wood Carving studio. Many enthusiasts have worked on reserving the unique culture and explaining the meaning and value of their tribe life in Truku of Wanrong Township. Although the descendants cannot fully master the skills, they still could experience the pearl of their ancestors wisdom from these tradition crafts. And the record of any form we have made would be the best marketing method for the local people to participate in the culture preservation.
